Title: Thermostat option for Stelvio
Post by: kgujas on December 12, 2022, 09:07:30 AM
Hi ,
after I have read some articles about mounting a thermostat to Moto Guzzi oil cooler, I have a question about thermostat options .

Can I go with Mocal OT/1 thermostat or the bigger Mocal OT/2 thermostat is the right choice ?
This is the manufacturer site and if someone can help me, please do so.
http://www.mocal.co.uk/products-oilstats.html

Thanks.

Why do you need that?

If I had to pick a Mocal, I would choose the OT/2. The OT/1 looks too restrictive. You may want to check out the Mishimoto thermostat. It has three different temperature modules.

You might want to check with John Warner, who is a member here. He has fitted one to his Stelvio.

Don’t get too worried about your oil temperature. If so , then change the oil twice as often. I doubt that you could ever wear that engine out. High temps, low temps - doesn’t matter. Take reasonable care of it and it will keep on trucking.

Thanks for answers.
@GuzziOrDeath I will check and try to contact John. From your experience, it is ok to go with temp 92C - fully open st 104C?

With thermostat , as I have read, in cold weather engine will warm up quicker  and it will warm up to working temp, fuel consumption will be reduced, engine parts wear will be reduced… this is how I understand.

You'll get more engagement in the Stelvio thread at advrider.  One frequent poster equipped his Stelvio with a thermostat; I suggest searching for his posts or reaching out to him directly.  https://www.advrider.com/f/threads/moto-guzzi-stelvio-merged-threadfest.113158/page-2585#post-42470100

That's a good option. The thermostat on my Griso opens at 100C.

I think the Thermostats that start to open at around 104°C are the highest rated ones available.
Mine's a Moshimoto item, starts to open at 103°.

All the 1200 8V Engines are very over-cooled, and any Air-Cooled Engine with an Oil Cooler should really have a Thermostat fitted in the Cooling Oil Circuit.
Can you imagine the outcry if a manufacturer released a car without a Thermostat in the Cooling System!!

In cooler Weather/Climates, the Oil probably won't reach a decent temp in normal use.
Synthetic Oil works best at around 110-120°C

In Ambient temps around 14°C (57°F) or lower, the Oil won't get much above 70-75°C (158-167°F), which isn't good for the Engine or the Oil, you'll get emulsification of the Oil, which can lead to internal corrosion.

It's worse on the later (post-2011) Stelvios, with the larger Cooler.
It's worth fitting an Oil Temp Gauge to keep an eye on temps, especially in cooler weather.

I made my own Thermostat Housing, just used the Moshimoto Waxstat, it's the same part used in off-the-shelf Thermostat Units.

Machining my own Housing meant I could reuse the original Cooler Hoses, and the Unions, they're not standard Hose Fitting items.

Using an off-the-shelf Unit, you'll need a few more Fittings, and possibly some Hoses.

Have a read through Mark (Beetle) Bayley's write up of fitting a Thermostat to his Griso 1400.

Thanks John for your explanation.
I will definitely put one to my bike just after I found out what options of thermostat I can get.
