A Saturday in the garage lends itself to slow cooking. I almost made carnitas today but ended up making spaghetti and meatballs. There are so many great cold weather options - pot roast, roast chicken, meatloaf...
-
Lamb shanks with mashed potato and fresh green beans.
I like to leave my hands only lightly washed after playing with the bike all day, the smell of Motul 10W60 and gravy with a dash of port wine all over my greasy paws is nice as you go to sleep by the open fire with the rain outside.

I made a big pot of cabbage rolls yesterday. Man, did they turn out GOOD!! :thumb:

Tortiere with french fries and gravy.

I had to look up what a tortiere is. That’s now on the list to make.

Oh man, few things smell as bad or worse than cooking cabbage. Before Ruth and I married I came to her house walked in and about threw up from the stink. She was making corn beef and cabbage. She said my face turned green literally.

Ham & beans & corn bread.

I agree about boiled cabbage John. I do like red cabbage braised with vinegar, sugar and bacon. No bad smell. If you can con someone into making schnitzel to go with it, all the better.

Gumbo, going to cook a pot today.

There’s so many things to cook when it’s cold, not sure how to prioritize..
The only benchmark must-have snow dish I do is cinnamon sugar blueberry muffins. Ever since our daughter was born, whenever it snows here in SC, that’s what I owe her for breakfast. She’s headed to college in Japan for 6 months early Tuesday am, so today we scattered some snowflake confetti in hallway & table and counted the real snow nearby in Asheville as close enough. Just made some to go with this morning’s regular breakfast of ham & potatoes, yesterday’s leftover homemade Chik-fil-a for biscuits (another daughter favorite) and eggs in front of the well-stoked wood stove-

Then, after she leaves, I think there’s going to be a revamp or at least reduction in my normal winter cooking routines. An easy way to make a bike go faster is to make it weigh less, one way or another. I’ll probably be cooking a wider variety of skip-its this winter….

Well, this is certainly not a favorite of mine but it's worth sharing here. I teach a blacksmithing course for the month of January at a local college. Our second project is making grilling forks. Last week one of the kids got the "great idea" of trying grilled Ruben's over the coal forge fire. What a hoot, and messy. But clean-up was easy, just crank up the bellows....done!

Whats wrong with the smell of corned beef and cabbage with potatoes and carrots in a pressure cooker. Can't wait for corned beef to be on sale again. Just can't bring myself to spend $30 for a package that would be on sale for about $9.

Lebanese style lentil veggie soup with a side of home made garlic bread!

Roman beans and sauerkraut :thumb:

Are roman beans related to jumpin' beans?

I'll second the chili opinion. But I'll add a second option, my Mom used to make pasties. I think they're pretty much a Wisconsin- upper Michigan dish. Using a pie crust to contain the ingredients, beef stew pieces of meat, potatoes cubed into 3/4" squares, sliced carrots, onions, seasoning, all wrapped up like a calzone. baked in the oven.
-
Posole rojo with the full quiver of sides: oregano, lime, avocado, and diced onion.
Tonkatsu ramen also does the trick.

Turnip or rutabaga in them too. Mainly root vegetables. I had them in the UP on the way to boat races in Indian River.

Right you are kk. I forgot about those root vegetables. Don't see much of those here in Florida. But my Cuban wife uses lots of root vegetables in her cooking like Yucca, boniato, and malanga.

Today; pork tenderloin in bbq sauce with browned onions and potatoes in the crock pot for 10 hours. Served with salad.
But, it is never too cold for a bowl of ice cream.
-
Dare we bring up steel cut oats again? Mom used to make oatmeal the night before, spread it in a cake pan about 3/4" thick, and refrigerate. In the morning she would cut them into 4x4 squares and fry. Little butter and syrup to get your motor running.

I've never associated food with weather. I enjoy soup and chili year round.
But I'll throw out Cincinnati chili. I don't usually make it in the summer, so I'll call it a cold weather dish.

Now that you mention it, I could really go for some Chili 5 ways.

Nothing better than a January afternoon in the brasserie with a cold quart of Molson's Ex and a slab of meat pie.
The Raftsman in Gatineau was our favorite.

I vote for Huzo lamb shanks,my mother used to make them with plenty of red wine.My Dad liked pork shanks and kraut with potatoes, throw them in the pot and boil the bejesus out of it.
-
Slow cooked lamb casserole with spuds and root vegetables. Add pickled red cabbage and crusty bread, scrumptious 😋
-
My mom made lamb shanks quite often. We lived in Connecticut where lamb was common. I live in California now and don't see lamb in the market very often and never shank cuts and it doesn't taste the same, I don't care for it. My mom's lamb shanks was one of my favorite dinners, she broiled them in the oven.

My favorite is the plate that’s in front of me !
-
A bowl of red and some hot tortillas for me.
-
Beef stew with some red pepper flakes
-
Made some King Ranch Chicken that turned out pretty well. Nothing except Rotel tomatoes came out of a can. I don't 'do' soup in a can.
It is getting about time to make some jambalaya as well.

Teviot pie is a good one.
