Title: Favorite Non-Guzzi Street Bike
Post by: SmithSwede on April 05, 2023, 08:18:51 PM
So fellows, I admit to feeling a bit guilty.   I loved my 2013 Guzzi V7 Stone to bits and racked up some decent mileage on her.  But after my crash, I “turned Japanese” and now ride a 2019 Kawasaki Z900 RS.  Which, I confess, I also love to bits.  So I’m not here on Wild Guzzi as much as I was before.

So tell me.  You may be a dyed-in-the-wool, no-joke, real-deal Guzzi fanatic.  But what is your favorite non-Guzzi street bike?

Congrats on the Kawasaki (I've had 3 Ks' all good.), but for the street and travel, my r1150 beemer has been and still is a good traveler and all-round reliable machine.

For sport and occasional track day,and I love my '97 VFR, the last of the carb models and ridged frame, stock 'except for upgraded brakes (non-linked).

For the Guzzi, the CX100 has always brought a smile and never failed to get me back to the barn, even if on one cylinder.

Both the Harley Road Kings I had 20 years apart.

The quintessential American motorcycle for seeking horizons.

Plenty of things you want, and plenty of not that you don't need.

Not the best at anything but being what it is.

My Road King. It's got me thinking about selling the California. I find it much more comfortable.

I'm a big fan of the first generation Hinkley Triumphs, the Daytona and Speed Triples in particular.

In my view the best all around street motorcycle ever built was not exciting, not inspiring or visceral like a Guzzi. The beauty of it was the silent feeling you were flying unassisted through space.  BMW K75. Seamless fuel injection, stainless exhaust. Plenty of electrical power for aux lights and/or heated clothing. Good handling (once out of the garage ). Self retracting center stand. Single sided swingarm and centerstand allows for easy tire maintenance front and rear. Capable of  ton ish speeds all day long. Aluminium fuel tank, quality tool kit.  Ungodly smooth. I would never have sold mine if my health held out.  (https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fmotos.autos-markt.com%2Fimg%2FBMW-K75-301655903775%2F0.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=ffeced10d2f181fc8e71196affc06f63e1eedd07ec8782086598f24168b97407&ipo=images) (file photo)

Ducati fan here, currently got 2 (wanted a LeMans since I first saw one back in the '70s had to wait 30+ years to find one in my garage.)

Here's my all Italian trio of twins;

Favourite non-Guzzi, was the 916 but finding myself drawn more towards the Monster in recent years, must be an age thing!

SmithSwede,

Don't beat yourself up, you're only human after all.

There are so many fantastic motorcycles out there, that the person who sticks to just one brand (or even a few models) usually strikes me as a narrow minded miserable curmudgeon with very limited experience and little sense of adventure.

I've never had the deep pockets to be able to sample most of the exotics that many WGer's have owned.  Any favorite would depend upon my mood at the moment and the roads in the immediate vicinity.

But to play the game:  Suzuki DR650, SV650, V-Strom 650, KTM Duke 690, Suzuki GS1000G, Kawasaki VerSys 650, Yamaha XS750, and R5C all come to mind.

My older brother once counseled me that "Motorcycle are like women.  You should try out as many as possible, but not fall in love with any of them!"

Needless to say, the former are less expensive than the later.

I would still buy a K75S in a second!!!  That being said, I tode one of the Triumph Scramblers and it was amazing and fit me perfect!

These are always great threads because you learn as much, or more about the poster from their opinions as you do about the motorcycles they are opining about.

You also learn about their resources and skill sets.

Those who own machine shops, welders, CAD systems, and body shop equipment always have interesting lists.

My hands down favorite was my 1983 FXRS.  It was the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden.  I could ride it all day and never get sore, and have never been able to repeat that with another bike.  It handled very well for a Harley, or just about anything else.  I sold it in an ill fated chase for a '77 900SS and still regret it to this day.

Greetings,
I don't have any modern bikes but out of what I have left, it would have to be my Darmah. Wonderfully smooth, plenty of power, (for me) and an electric start. Probably keep the few I have left. My kids can deal with them after I am gone.

You guys picked a lot of really good bikes, the Honda VFR, Ducati 860 GT, BMW K75. Terrific machines.

But, if I could find my 1978 SR500, I would buy it back. These big singles, mimic the venerable British thumpers. But, the SR didn’t leak, and the electrics work.
Plus, they are very light and nimble.

Kawa Z900RS Cafe

and probably the bike I would buy if not for the new V100 Mandelo topping my list:

For me, my favourite bike cannot be nominated for the following reasons.
Is it..
The one that you remember most fondly..Suzuki GT 750
The one that got you so excited that you couldn’t sleep…Honda SL 70
The one that I did the most memorable trip on…Honda CT 110
The one that did everything better in an all ‘round way…Triumph Sprint ST 1050
The one that got the most attention…MV Agusta 750 SPR
The one that I sold for no good reason…Triumph Daytona 955i..and so on.
I guess if you boil it all down and in the spirit of your question, it would be if you had to finish your run on only ONE bike for the rest of your days, not as a young man but who you are now and from the ones  you’ve owned in the past or coveted from a distance….?
If it CANNOT be a Guzzi, then from of the ones I’ve owned (45 or so)…
The Triumph Sprint ST 1050
Of the ones I have not owned..?
A different Triumph Sprint ST 1050
Inexpensive, rock of Gibraltar reliable, powerful real world mid range, comfortable ergonomics, plain Jane looks that no one wants to steal.
The woman analogy is so apt it’s scary…

Now Scotty, you have to nominate ONE…!
That is why the question is framed that way. I put up a post once on the same topic and the problem was/is.
Nominating your “favourite” is hard, leaving out your “second favourite” is impossible.
But back to the question Scotty…
Which ONE is it…?

Great choice. I had two of these, as rare as they are. The 600cc had some nice exclusive alloy bits, like the oil tank, side covers, headlight brackets etc.

I have to give propsto Yanaha for taking a chance on the SR500 and the SRX6. Both sold slower than molasses.

i am pretty much on the same boat, bought a brand new V7 racer back in 2011. the only bike I have and been enjoying it eversince. until last week saw a Yamaha XSR900 at the dealership. put down a deposit and ride it home last week. totally different bike and I am pretty much hooked. while the 2011 V7 don't even have ABS (doesn't need it anyway), the Yami comes with all the latest tech like IMU, D mode, corner AbS etc... I am keeping the Guzzi, and will probably ride it one season every few year to rotate with the XSR.

By street bike do you mean something that doesn't leave town? I have a 1966 BSA Lightning 650 and Triumph Trophy 650 for that, any extended high speed with these units will guarantee failure, that is one thing about old Guzzis, take them anywhere anytime any use and they stay together. The Brits stay inside until I feel a need to ride other than Guzzi.  DonG

Smith, that 900 Kawi is most likely the best choice for replacing a v7 out there. At least until you have to set the valves. Allow four days and 2-6 six packs.
Now if you're missing the v7 a bit too much take a v85 out for a test ride.

Favorite bike that is a non-Guzzi and currently in my stable?

Toss up: 2015 Triumph Trophy or 1987 K75S.

Both are very, very competent motorbikes.

Always wanted one of those. Not a single, but you express  the Exact reason I have held on to my 78XS 750 Triple and 79 XS1100.... They cost virtually nothing to keep. I put over 130K miles on the XS11 before retiring her from daily and long distance riding in 1998 when I bought a C10 Concours. I rode that thing in all weather, on all roads, 4 corners on the US, dozens of trips to the Dragon and other such roads, at east 5 Iron Butts, and all over Eastern Canada and up to Novi Scotia. A faithful friend. Changed the shims once, never a single engine issue, and NEVER had to open the carbs other than a Torn CV ballast thing. I did have to replace the fuse box and ignition switch wiring and a few electrical issues, and the last few years that I had a leaky valve stem seal on the furthest left exhaust valve. Unless ridden daily it makes quite a smoke show. The XS750 had a few issues, but was a fun torquey little motor. I put on shorter shocks in hopes my wife could ride it but was still too tall and mostly heavy.

Still my favorites. Both have been in long term temp controlled garaged storage since 2013 2 years since the Griso 'enlightened my sensibilities. Really looking forward to their resurrection in 2025 and I can ride the Griso and XS11 back to back, as well as the 1200 Sport. Then we will see who is truly King of my Herd. If I had to get rid of all my bikes, the XS11 would likely be the one to stay, though I'd also hate to let go of the Convert (and the Griso, and the Stornello.. and and and lol)

Both are 99% all original with the exception of the paint on the 11 which I did in 1984, and the exhaust that I replaced when an earthquake shook the bike so bad it tumbled off the center stand and broke the right exhaust header in 2011. The ONLY immediate replacement was a cheapo MAC system. I had 3 kids in college at the time...... Many of you know the deal.

OK, PICS have more value

For me there are 3 non-Guzzi that always tug at my thoughts

Kawa Z900RS Cafe
(https://bikes.motobank.co.uk/fp/20835/kawasaki-z900-rs-cafe-2018-green_1.jpg)

Triumph 660 Trident (tho I'm sure at +6ft and +230#, riding this would be like a bear on a bicycle)

and probably the bike I would buy if not for the new V100 Mandelo topping my list:

Triumph Speed Twin
(https://media.gq-magazine.co.uk/photos/5d13aa742881cce35f0a9844/16:9/pass/side-speed-twin.jpg)

If this had a shaft, it would have been in my garage years ago...... I tried chain on my FZ1 and FZ6, and just was never happy or comfortable (my mental issue)

Huzo, if we have to limit it to what we can ride NOW, that narrows it down drastically.  When the choice (due to physical condition) is give up riding or go smaller, smaller I shall go. OK, my take on SS's original post was bikes you have owned and ridden... Would love to have many of the other bikes mentioned.
The one bike I never knew I wanted: 2005 R1200ST. Bought locally with 66K miles.  Not much to look at IMHO but the perfect balance of old and new: no ABS, no ESA but the motor and Telelever make for a super fun and comfortable ride for about half the price of an 8V Norge or Stelvio NTX. Lots of smiles per gallon from WI to CA and back  last summer.

Great choice. I had two of these, as rare as they are. The 600cc had some nice exclusive alloy bits, like the oil tank, side covers, headlight brackets etc.

I have to give props to Yamaha for taking a chance on the SR500 and the SRX6. Both sold slower than molasses.

cayman gt4 0 60 (https://statewideinventory.org/porsche-0-60-times)

I agree.  Yamaha took some real marketing chances in the past in the US.

IMO, the SRX600 was one of the nicest looking bikes that the Big Four ever produced.

SR500, SRX600, Vision 550, GTS1000, Seca650, TDM850, RZ350, etc.  Always fascinating to see what sells in one market that does not sell in another market.

For you fans of the SRX600, some of the MZ Skorpion gurus have mated an air cooled XT600 top end to the 660 bottom end, or just substituted the XT600E engine in the MZ frame.

IMO, the air cooled MZ is a nice looking bike.  No doubt a bit slower and a bit lighter....

Ed, which MZ are you referring to, the 500, or the later Skorpion?
The Skorpion had a relatively powerful, water cooled, Yamaha engine, IIRC.

I am referring to the Skorpion 660 with the water cooled, 5 valve single Yamaha also used in the XTZ660, the SZR660, and the Tenere' that were not sold in the US.

I will post some pictures of the modified bike when I get a chance.

IIRC, the 500 used an air cooled single built by Rotax.

Over a 30 year period I had 30 Guzzi's. Sometimes up to four at once. For some years I became the local Guzzi tech. Unwanted Guzzi's would often find there way here for restoration or rehoming.
As my tastes finally wandered, I found myself lusting after the RS900 Kawasaki in 2019 when it came out. But I was also getting older and needed something smaller. I wound up with a 2021 RE 650 GT. It WAs the bike I needed and it's been a real peach! Had it out just yesterday for an hour's joy ride.

I'd have to say my old 1989 Harley FXRT.  Rode that thing all over.  My first real touring bike.  Sturgis, Yellowstone, Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive.  Countless trips to Florida.  So many good memories.  I'd probably still be riding it if that lady in the Ford Tarus hadn't pulled out in front of me in Paducah, KY!  Sturgis 99...I wrecked mine!

In 1983 the local HD dealership sent our motor squad one of those, in the police model, to try out.
Each of the 14 of us got it for a day and sent out CO a review.
I remember writing a good review as it was a well suited for a police motorcycle.
The deal didn’t go through, probably money reasons, so we kept our CB900s from 82-89.

You have never owned any other street bikes but Moto Guzzi's?

How sad!

Reminds me of a guy back home who only rode Harleys for decades.  He never tired of telling people that anything other than a Harley wasn't a motorcycle and that people who rode non-Harleys had no idea what a "good motorcycle" was.  Then his Harley was stolen, and it was during the era when getting a new Harley from a dealer took about 18 months.  So he swallowed his self esteem and bought a new Moto Guzzi.  He never looked back at Harleys and rode Moto Guzzi's for the rest of his life, another 20 years or so.  Again, he never tired of telling people that Moto Guzzi's were the best thing out there.

If the V-Twins are not toooooo civilized, their charm is undeniable!

Age and a very slight physique made it necessary to sell both my Stone Touring hydros in 2016.  I manage today (barely) with a 2004 Breva 750 which is the bike (of three) I'm happiest to be seen on.  The '21 Royal Enfield is manageable, currently, but its days appear numbered only a bit more than the Breva.

My least favorite bike to be seen on, but my most easy to ride, and thus likely the longest to reside in my garage, is the 2017 Honda CB-500F, shown below.  Lightened to 398# topped off, lowered to a 29" seat height, it is very pleasant to ride, if a bit tepid.  It does get a consistent mileage in the mid-70s mpg as I ride moderately and have upped the gearing by 13%.

The 83s that we tested were belt driven as a chain would have definitely been a deal breaker to even agree to testing them.

Same as you, Sir, I have 4 bikes, and my two favourites are the Z900RS and Guzzi Griso 12008V.  Different in so many ways, but the same in the few critical ones: both thoroughbreds, make me feel part of the bike/machine - both are rider's bikes.  Both give great feedback and are rewarding, exhilerating and feel unique.  Don't ask me to choose, I couldn't.  Cheers. BMR.

I feel like they really put their heart and soul into designing and building the 1000s, SF and ST. Always wanted one and a few years ago one popped up near me and I had to have it.
It had about 2500 miles on it when I got it. My older body doesn't like clip-on's for very long, but a couple hrs every now and then works fine. Great motor and it handles great as well.

Can you elaborate as to why you altered the gearing ?

Sure thing, Huzo:   I began riding in 1953, mostly on Velocette singles, the sort of bikes that fire once every telephone pole.  I like relaxed cruising.  The Japanese naked and sport bikes are set for power wheelies in 6th gear and low quarter-mile times.  When new, my 2017 Honda 500 twin was geared abominably low; around 6000 rpm at 60 mph, so it not only looked like an insect (with wheels), it sounded like an insect.  Couldn't stand it.  Contacted Sprocket Specialists in the US and got a 17T counter-shaft sprocket to replace the OEM 15T, which lowered RPM in any gear by 13%.  Bottom gear, which had been so low as to be almost unusable, now is all right.  I still don't like to cruise it at more than about 60 mph.  The bike is a good one to grow old on, being low and light and very manageable.

My favorite all around bike of the present three is my 2021 Royal Enfield "Interceptor 650" which I've gotten down to 440# and, yes, I bumped its countershaft sprocket up one tooth, also.  3600 at 60 mph.  Sweet.

I remember going the other way on my old RD400. First off im 6'3" tall, and have always been over 200lbs since I was a adult. Road mostly in the hills, and mountains around me, and took city/town streets to get there. The steeper gear to get my butt off the line, and to move me up the hills was much more useful then sitting on the highways. I love my shaft drive bikes, but really you cant beat a chain for adapting to your self, and your uses of the bike.
