Title: 2014 Stelvio Driveline slop

Hello all,

New to forum but not entirely new to Moto Guzzi.  Previous owner of a Quota and V11 Lemans.  Missed my Guzzi's so I picked up a 2013 Stelvio last fall.  I did not get to ride it at all prior to purchase.  Finally have gotten it out this spring and I have a question about the play in the driveline.  I have a noticeable clunk in the driveline when releasing the clutch and bike is in gear or changing gears. I am not talking about an initial put it in gear from neutral, rather a clunk upon clutch release with each gear change.   I can make it disappear by feathering the throttle a little sooner, just prior to releasing the clutch.  This weekend I did the 12k valve clearance check/adjustment (took my about the same amount of time as an oil change - love it.)  But, I was initially going to find top dead center by putting it in gear and rotating the rear wheel - when I did so, I think I isolated the driveline play.  It seems I can rotate the wheel back and forth about 1.5 inches before I feel it engage or lock in if that makes any sense.

Sorry my description is awful but I don't know how else to describe it.  Is that a normal amount of driveline play for these bikes?  I have never experienced that much play in prior shaft drive bikes and just wondering if I need to dig in further.

Can't say completely, but just went out and checked the 1200 Sport (similar CARC) that is about right. I'd check the side to side and top to bottom for play just to be safe.  I guess I have gotten used to the play in the system, the Griso is the same, as was true for my 2014 8V Norge if I remember.

I'm sure others will be along.

Thank you for checking.  I appreciate that.  I checked for bearing play side to side just to be safe.  It is definitely rotational (fore/aft).  Just didnt know what normal tolerances are.  Thanks again!

One more thing to check for the 'Clunking' is to check the spherical bearing and silentblock bush in the reaction arm and make sure the bolts are tight.

The bushes that the previous poster mentioned are in both ends of this arm.

The rubber bushes can be replaced if worn.
That play that you describe is present in every big block driveline. Mine is exactly the same as you describe, you do need a certain “ touch” in the lower 3 gears and especially in slow traffic in 1st gear.

My 1400 had that much lash in the driveline. Mine didn't have any clunking though but different bike.
