Title: Ayone have an unused LeMans fairing? Real or repro- to loan or sell
Post by: Mayor_of_BBQ on May 04, 2023, 12:14:15 PM
Hello

I would really like to fit a LMI fairing to my CX100. My bike has had a front end swap, so fork/clamps/headlight/dash are all not factory.

I'm only going to go thru with it if I can fit it fairly easily, so I dont want to commit to buy a reproduction one, in the case it wont fit right or seems like too much work to make it happen. I dont care if it's real or repro, painted or not...  I promise not to hack on it or modify it in any way

If you have one in a box or gathering dust in the rafters, I would love to borrow it, shipping paid both ways of course.  I dont even need the windscreen (to keep cost down). Just want to mock it up, see what sort of brackets I need to fabricate, how much I'll need to cut the headlight opening, is it deep enough to sit right on my rig...

Not making any allusions or accusations, but please forgive for taking the opportunity to tell a tale about one of my early mechanical mentors, Randy Walls.

When I met him circa 1981 he owned a Texaco station in El Cajon. I knew just enough about taking things apart and putting them back together again, while pumping gas, that I lucked into working with him for a couple of years in an old school gas pumps and auto repairs environment.

He related a tale of wanting to build a funny car to further his drag racing endeavors, and when the early seventies Nova caught his eye he rented one for a couple of weeks, filled the gaps in the doors with modeling clay, and put a few coats of wax on it.

He and a friend then proceeded to build a fiberglass shell over the car, then remove the shell in as few pieces as possible. This was the origin of the Randy Walls Super Nova, first Chevy to do 200 and 210 mph in the quarter mile, which should give you some idea of the time frame. They're probably doing 300 mph now.

I have the LeMans I fairing on my CX with the stock forks and round headlight. The fork openings on the fairing are narrow compared to the fork spread on the CX so the openings had to be expanded. You need to post the spread of your forks to see if the fairing will work without modification, my guess is that it is wider than the LeMans forks.

Edit: my 76 LeMans is 7-1/4” between the forks measured from the bolts on the top of the forks compared to 7-3/4” on the CX forks.

Oh, it's way wider and the forks are USD, so fork uppers are much larger diameter as well. I am sure it's going to require modification, that's why I want to get my hands on one so I can see how extensive. Between my huge headlight and thick forks, there may not even be enough material to support cutting both out to the needed degree

Post some dimensions of the headlight, forks and maybe we can guesstimate if it will work.
