Title: Cast vs spoked wheel weight, V7III
Post by: majstevetrevor on June 25, 2023, 03:47:59 PM
I did search and saw a few threads where this was discussed, but didn’t see any real conclusions. So just curious if anyone knows the weight difference between the cast versus spoked wheels for the V7III.  Or if not actual numbers, any seat-of-the-pants dyno anecdotes?  Thanks.

Do not know about modern but the spoke wheels on my 2012 V7R were several pounds heavier that the cast Breva 750 wheel I put on it. About 1/2 the weight was tubes.

I’m pretty sure the spoked wheels on my Norge are (slightly) heavier than the cast ones.

Looking towards turning my new V7 IIIR - 2017, the most reliable; based on then current info - the first thing I did was swap out the wire rims for cast. Other changes were spark plug caps, metal fuel filter, a relay, I cannot recall 2 other concerns.

The wire spoke rims were obviously several lbs. heavier - which was not my original reason, i.e. It was - again, imagining a rear tire change, under any circumstance. Still that beast, nearing 400#, turned out to be too heavy. Fore Sail!  One dollar per mile ridden.

Low miles. Total make over as new. 4 pot front radial Brembo w/fully adj. master cylinder. Chrome tail rack, Grizzly brown w/matching seat  & side panels. Wheels powder coated cream.

Foto's available. BTW: someone gave me 4 hundred $ for the 2 wheels.    R3~

Mind you, the V7 changed its spoked wheels at some point before the V7 II. Can’t recall which year but searching through the various parts fiche will show. That or maybe they just updated the part number.

I have an extra rear wheel currently without a tire installed that I could weigh, but alas—it has sealant and a strip of sealing tape. But might be helpful if you wanted to compare a SEALED spoked rim (for tubeless tires) vs a cast wheel (also for tubeless tires). Takes the tube out of the equation.
