So my 2001 California EV tachometer is flaking out. At idle (1000rpm+-) the tach reads 4000rpm and when I rev up to about 3000 the tach redlines at 9000+ and the rev limit kicks in. I checked the ground and it looked ok but I added a separate ground wire from the tach to the frame just to be sure. No difference. Probably the issue is with the tach internals but is there anything else to look for before I send it off for repair?
Thanks!

The veglia electronic tachs are troublesome. I replaced mine with a speedhut electronic tach on my 98 EV, when the original failed. I plan to do the same with the speedometer, if it starts acting up. Theres quite a bit of informative discussion here regarding speedhut gauges.

I was able to fix mine once, the hair thin support wires on the needle broke. Lasted a few hundred miles and then failed again. Save yourself the hassle and get an aftermarket replacement. I got a Auto Meter and no issues after.

Does the tach have any way to trigger a rev limiter? I thought that was controlled by the computer. Maybe something else is going on here.

That was my question too. I pulled the tach and bench tested it. It is reading way off so there is something going on with it. Running without the tach installed gives the same result. I ordered a new rev/tdc/phase sensor because that is where the ecu gets the signal. Hopefully that will solve it. Will need a new tach also I imagine.
I'm wondering if I fried some electronics by jump starting with one of those lithium ion jumper packs.

Nobody stateside will repair a veglia electronic tach. Speed hut will sell you one for 2 bills and you can customize it. Tip, download any logo you want for the instrument before ordering from speed hut.
