Title: worn distributor gear on loop
Post by: ray bear on July 23, 2023, 02:16:10 AM
Doing some work on my mates 850GT and come across excessive wear on distributor drive gear and on only half of the teeth on 1 side as if the shaft is bent, 3 of the teeth are becoming almost knife edge, looking at camshaft all appears well and if cam had an issue it would effect all teeth on distributor. I will remove shaft and see what a dial indicator shows but maybe someone has dropped it at some stage , turning it insitu appears to be no run out but my eyes arent that good. also distributor shaft has 29 thou end float which is excessive according gregs site  and still has original pin, so dont think anyone has been there before me.  Can some one shed some light on this please ,thanks for replies Ray

I had a t3 that had a lot of miles on it and had that problem. The points kept getting out of adjustment until a guy figured out what was wrong, apparently worn out.

Hi RB,

When I went through my Eldo distributor the end play was excessive too.  As I recall I got shims & roll pin from McMaster-Carr (stateside) but someone in the Down Under area might have them too.  I can't help with the gear though but would be reluctant to re-use it if wear is noticeable.  While you are in there, you may want to replace the ignition advance springs too, I believe guzzilogy recommended spring part numbers or maybe they're posted at This Old Tractor.  If you can't source the shims & roll pin locally, pm me and I'll try to see if I still have those things around....I did mine over a decade ago.
