Title: Owl’s Head Motorcycle Show
Post by: Scout63 on August 13, 2023, 07:26:43 PM
The Owl’s Head show in Maine is going to be on 9/16.  The museum is great, and there are several biplanes available for rides. The ride up coastal Maine from the Boston area is wonderful.  Bikes have to be 20 years old to show.  I’m going to haul a couple of bikes up from the Cape.  I wish I had a Guzzi assembled, but maybe a Laverda and Norton…

Love that show. I guess this year will be my third time.

Slight chance I may have my R80/7 together by then—just got the front brake system rebuilt. Tank sealed, paint needs to be sanded off. New battery installed. Rear brake needs inspected, and the wiring HOPEFULLY only needs to be connected up (PO installed a Dyna ignition, but seeing that nothing so far has matched his original “good condition” claim, I have my suspicions).

Regardless, looking forward to it once more!

I love Owl's head.. my favorite museum. Still have the ribbon from showing the Lario there several years ago.

I go to that one every year.

I have ribbons in the garage from 2008, so I've been going at least that long.

DO PLEASE bring the Laverda, Ben - I'd like to see that one!

Steve usually brings something toothsome as well.

Great, hope to see some of you up here...

I have been a member at the museum for years, a couple of friends fly and volunteer there.  One just built a Sopwith Camel also.  Amazing aircraft.

Not sure what I will ride up this year, a Guzzi maybe.

I plan to be there again as usual. It's only a one-day event this year so I hope it's good weather on the 16th. Also, make note that it's not on Labor Day weekend like it has been for as long as I can remember. If I can get the Laverda fully sorted by then I want to ride it down. If not, it'll be the little Bimota DB4. Hope to see many of you there, it's well worth the trek.
I'd also like to make it down to the Italian bike show in Sturbridge, Mass. put on by the Italian Motorcycle Owners Club (IMOC) on the 10th, (the weekend before Owls Head).

IMOC feature bikes this year are bevel Ducatis.  Maybe I can get the 450 Scrambler sorted in time…

Busy month with Larz Anderson Tutto Italiano on 9/17
and European Motorcycles on 9/27.

Reportedly construction forced Larz to move Tutto's date to Sept.  Otherwise Tutto and Euro Bike were spread out date-wise.

Excuse me, as I have never been north of Boston, but what kind of weather does that part of Maine get in September?

You’re essentially in between summer and peak leaf peeping fall season. Maybe not as pretty, but the weather’s quite good. The couple-hour ride up from Dover, NH the past couple years has always been good.

there's a saying here in Maine: "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute." Just check the forecast. It could be rainy, cold and 50 degrees; or, sunny and warm, even hot. It's Maine.

Steve's right.

The weather changes so fast sometimes that you can slip on the
ice, fall down in the mud, and get up and dust yourself off.......

Most years it's quite nice.    :thumb:

Looking forward to this Event. Only made it once as it usually falls on Labor Day Weekend.
If you like all things Old that still Work, Make this Show.
The Bike is Awesome in its self. Your 20 YO bike puts you  the show.( It did ?)
Going to be a Big Week with the IMOC Show 9/10 down Sturbridge Ma 9/16.
Hoping to do both before heading home and getting RV ready for Kentucky and followed with a Free lunch in Texas.

Yep, CharlieW - it's busy in September this year in New England.

IMOC on 9/10, Owl's Head Event on 9/16, FSSNOC Rally in Bethel , VT on 9/21,
and European Motorcycle Day at the Larz Anderson Museum in Brookline, MA on 9/26.

FSSNOC!?!  I used to have member no. 4000 then lost track of the club. If I thought I could steal away from Sara for three weekends in a row I would head up and bring the SR. Our place in Warren is only 45 minutes north of Bethel. Ugh.

I'm #1076.

My plan is to ride the KLR over. I've got to confirm the jetting and
get new tires on it, and then it should be ready.

I'm planning to drag Lynn to one or two of these events - she actually
asked about the Owl's Head shindig - to keep things blissful on the
domestic front.

I would bring her to Owl’s Head. It’s closer, near the water and has biplanes and classic cars.  Probably more red suspenders and home brewing going on at FSSNOC.

These events are just in time after a wet summer in New England.
Owl'l Head is a bit far for me, mainly cuz I plan to go to Tutto Italiano the day after at Larz.

The European Motorcycle show is on 9/24, not sure I'll go being at Larz again.

It was a good show up in Maine yesterday. The weather was perfect and there were many bikes.  My favorite was an older Ninja 750 with dirt tires.  It was good to see forum friends Stretch and SP Moto in person. Steve took the Vincent for a lap.

Great Day, Long Day
Owls Head Transportation Museum is a Great Destination for people
interested in Old Mechanical stuff. Not to many Guzzi's ,but plenty interesting bikes.

I brought a small group with me this time—a friend with his R100R, another with a new-to-him R100T mated to a Velorex, and one more who tagged along in his car, too nervous to make the 3.5 hour trek on one of his old steeds.

We got in around 12:30. I was getting nervous as we got closer to the museum because we were seeing some older bikes seemingly coming from the museum. Did we miss the memo? Is it closed? Was the turnout so poor due to the previous day’s hurricane that people didn’t find it worth sticking around? Thankfully when we showed up, there were still enough bikes to consider the drive worth the effort. It was nice to see the museum layout updated with a few new exhibited machines.

Hopefully next year they go back to the clearly marked partitions separating each country of manufacture. I suspect bringing the modern bikes onto the pavement this year was due to soggy conditions in the grass, and the storm didn’t allow for time to get everything as organized as in years past (or at least the previous couple years I’ve been there).

Hoping next year I can bring the R80/7 to the show. As much as I love my ‘16 Guzzi—btw, the Owl Museum trip marked the one year anniversary of my engine breakdown, pretty neat to return on the same machine—I don’t want to me relegated to the Modern Bike section at a vintage show anymore ;) Regardless, this vintage show at a cool museum with old planes flying around is 100% still worth the annual 3.5 hour ride up.

PS-apologies if I met anyone there, and forgot who you were on the forum. Faces come and go through my memory like a fart in the wind these days.

As others have said - a great time. The weather was drop-dead gorgeous.

Saw Scout63(Ben), spmoto(Steve), and CharlieW(charlie).
Sorry I missed ya, Dirk. I recall seeing your group come in, but
I didn't know it was you.

I took the long way home, and turned an 80-mile day into a
180-mile day. Stopped by Liberty Tool Company and only spent 80 cents...

I'm looking forward to next year already!
