Title: Harpers "outsider" fitment question
Post by: bigbikerrick on October 29, 2023, 10:36:45 AM
Hi Folks, I have a Harpers "outsider" on my 98 EV, and would like to swap that into in my 76 Convert if possible. Is it possible? What is the difference between the "early" outsider, and the one made for later years?  I just purchased a tonti sump spacer off of ebay, and was hoping to use that on the 98 EV, in place of the outsider, so I can use the outsider on the Convert, if it will fit. I see harpers sells a kit for bikes older than 1998, and an other kit for 1998 and newer. Whats the difference? On the website photo, that plate of both look to be the same. The later one has some sort of alloy wedge to protect the filter it seems.....
Is there anything else I would need, other than a longer bolt kit, and a couple of the green gaskets?
any advice,and suggestions, much appreciated.

Didn’t your EV originally have a deep sump? In which case you don’t need the sump spacer.
Edit, oh wait.. your going to use the shallow sump from the convert with the spacer on the EV, I get it.. I don’t know the answer to the outsider question.

Yes Sir. If the outsider from the EV fits the convert, then I will use the sump spacer in its place on the EV. Unsure if the outsider would fit the vert, but it should.  I hope!

I have an original outsider on my 76 converts.

Zoom in on the picture just below the muffler clamp.

This is the old style that has the braided line connecting the front to the rear internally.

You reuse the original pan, and you may or may not need new longer bolts. And you need to cap the original filter attachment to maintain the oil flow through the internal passages.

.

Takes the same amount of oil so your dipstick will read 1 qt. low, (the old low mark is now the new full mark) but you can substitute the dipstick from a Cali 11 and all will measure correctly.

No issues since installed and many miles.

Oil change takes 20 minutes tops.
