We all know that accomodation is a goodly percentage of the cost of a multi day/week/ month trip.
There is an undeniable buzz that comes with meeting a WG’er in a foreign country.
This forum exists due to the input financially and voluntarily from the membership.
I want to ride my Norge over the Golden Gate Bridge.
None of the above statements could be said to be false and so in light of that, here’s the thing..
If I arrived on the East Coast and collected my Norge, I have a standing offer from a high profile member to rest up if required at one of his homes and head off as my whim dictates.
Now, if I got a map of North America/Canada/Alaska, I could plan a trip starting from say, North Carolina…(?) and head off across the U.S. East to West, zip across to San Francisco then turn right. Keeping the sea on my left, I could go up into Canada then over the top and down the East Coast back to where I started.. It really is not that far, I did a lot more than that on a CT110 Honda.
But this is where it changes.
If anyone wanted to provide basic accomodation they could indicate their willingness on this thread and they would go on a list, at that point I’d get a marker pin and stick it in the map.
Now.
If and when there are enough offers of accomodation, I could ship my Norge over and hop from place to place.
But here’s the best bit…
The money that I WOULD have spent on accomodation, I could donate to the forum….
I don’t lose out because I wouldn’t know any of you without this forum.
Y’all would not lose out because the money goes toward forum costs.
Heaps of rollicking good times.
I’d hope that when I got to places like San Francisco, there may be one or more guides to escort me into the city and over the Bridge.
I reckon it’d be beaut….
What say y’all…?
Now…Ask a thousand questions.
-
Yer always welcome here Mate!
And in this case, here is Lynchburg, VA.
Accommodations will be modest but include plenty of dog and cat hair!
More great roads within a 150 mile radius than one could ride in a lifetime.
-
Well...you've known for years that you have a spot in Houston waiting for you...in the garage, right next to my Norge!
Kidding of course, welcome to accommodations, or even if you want to pitch a tent in the backyard...your choice!
-
Thank you both.
You’re on the list.

50 miles SE of the Golden Gate Bridge. We have a simple but comfortable home. We have hosted many world travelers here. Some not even on Guzzi. Some barely able to communicate with English. And, as you know from our recent meeting in Mandello del Lario, I like beer. I get the same or better treatment when I'm able to travel around the globe, so it is my way of payback.

Open door in Louisville KY if the timing is right. I pull chocks mid August to move back to Virginia. You MUST hit at least part of the Bourbon trail!

Huzo,
I would suggest watching some historical, geographical documentaries to increase your ability to communicate with "The Locals!"
A good start:
"My Cousin Vinny"
"Escape from NY"
Netflix series of "Ozarks" and "Longmire"

I'd pack heavy on a sense of humor if I were you!
My wife & I will disrespect your preferred pro-nouns as well as the legitimacy of your birth, etc.
Most of the people that I would introduce you to might treat you similarly........
Last thing we need here in Redncek America is an Aussie version of Prince Harry & Meagan Markel!
One of those Merkan-Strayan dictionaries might be helpful.......

Of course you must stop in Rockford, IL to have a good romp on the V11S. I will clear the bike parts off of the bed in the spare bedroom for you.
-
After you visit Dave Swanson and see his amazing collection,Spring Green Wisconsin, the gateway to the Driftless region is only a couple hours away. You can stay with me and ride with Moto and Dennis the Vincent collector and yours truly.Might be able to find some Fosters but no Vegamite .

We have an extra room in Lexington Illinois if you need it.
Keep an eye on the rally layout. Maybe you could hit a couple along the way.

St. Louis represents.
I didn't see your timing, but we will be out of town late June/early July. Other than that...we have room. STL is gateway to the ozark mtns.

Huzo,
I am Just south of Seattle with a spare BR with garage space! Welcome anytime. Can't vouch for it but I have heard of "bunk a biker" for peeps traveling thru on MC free accommodations https://www.bunkabiker.com/. Headed down the coast or back up I am just south of the Peace Arch crossing into BC.

Some years ago my sister, her family, and I rented a house on Coffin Neck in far down east Maine.
Big timber-framed pile - no expense was spared: slate roof, all copper plumbing including
the waste pipes, big porches, gourmet kitchen, observatory - the works.
We went on a little excursion to Quoddy Head State Park - the easternmost point in the
US, and site of the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse and some spectacular hiking trails. On the way in we, (I!) noticed
a few typical Harleys, and a scruffy Triumph Tiger with Utah plates off to the side. The weather
was misty and cool. On the way back to the van, I noticed that the rider of the aforementioned
Triumph was astride his machine. So, I went over to chat.
"You're a long way from home, eh?"
"Yep - Brisbane, Australia, mate!"
We chatted for a few minutes. He enquired about local campgrounds, and I couldn't really help the fella,
as I don't live in that part of the state.
I returned to the van, and mentioned the situation. I don't know what possessed me, but I said, " We've
got lots of room, why don't we invite him for the evening?" My sister immediately replied, "Let's do it! Quick,
get him before he rides off!" And so we made the acquaintance of Mr. Glen Cochrane of Brisbane, Australia!
He was absolutely delighted with the invitation, and I couldn't tell which he liked more - the accommodations
out of the weather, or the laundry facilities!
He'd bought the bike unseen on the internet, and flew to Utah to collect it and begin his tour of North America.
We were in touch for several years - which reminds me that I've got to email him some holiday greetings.
All of THAT said, by all means let us know if you're in the area. I have an extra bed, and you're welcome to it
for a day or two. I've also got workshop facilities if your mount needs a little fettling. Of course, it wouldn't take
much arm twisting to get me to ride some local roads with you as well. :-)

Huzo,
You are welcome here at the Oleo ranch (it is a cheap spread) here in the piney woods of East Texas (Lindale) In my 50 plus years I've hosted riders from Alaska to Florida. Wish I would have marked n a map of all the states Guzzi riders were from that stayed here.
I might be able to muster up some armadillo gumbo and of course a good cigar.

This has somewhat exceeded my expectations guys, thankyou one and all.
It’s starting to form into a good idea.
I considered coming and riding a borrowed bike from Dan in Charlotte NC, but I reckon I’d feel somewhat bereft at trip’s end if I don’t bring my Norge.
Sort of like having a shower with my raincoat on, today I’ll get a map and some marker pins.

Pete, I will get you squared away upon your arrival on the east coast. We can make plans when you figure out where the Norge will be landing. If by sea, Morehead or Beaufort NC, has international ports or if by air, Charlotte or Winston Salem would be the best destination.
This would put you traveling across the country east to west of course. You can plan you stops according to the sights you wish to visit.
I feel sure this could happen👍

Always welcome if you pass through central Ohio. We are located in the rural countryside about 35 minutes from Columbus on the Northwest side. Have your
own room and bath and plenty of space to do routine maintenance in my shop with tools and lift provided.

Again thank you all.

I am Located North of Pittsburgh. Although, I probably would not be on your route, you are welcome. Even if you don't make it over to my house, I would enjoy riding to meet you along the route. The V85 or the unseen Stelvio can always use a little workout. I have enjoyed your posts for many years.

If your route includes The Great White North (Eastern Ontario) we would be honoured to host you. We live in Almonte (50km east of Ottawa).

The Fence post Guzzi is an absolute icon mate. What an opportunity !

Sadly I do not have a spare room in our humble home, (they've been commandeered for her arts and crafts and my guitars) but I do have a rudimentary bike lift, tools, air compressor and a motorcycle trailer at your disposal should the need arise. Suburbs of Tulsa, Ok. There is a small Guzzi dealer in town.

I'm in south eastern Minnesota, a few miles from I-90 and Highway 61. I-90 runs from Boston to Seattle. Highway 61 runs along the length of the Mississippi river.
This is the edge of the drift-less area. There is a Moto Guzzi dealer 2 hours north of me in Lakeville Minnesota. I can change, mount and balance tires. Let me know if I can be of assistance in your trip.

Consensus…?
I turned over 200,000 in Italy at the Mandello event, so 300,000 in the USA only seems fitting, one would think ?
This was at the end at the Heathrow depot, with 209,000 k.

Traveling on a bike that if it dies underneath you, you can walk away from, knowing you have already got your money's worth out of it, is the ultimate traveling freedom, isn't it?
I suspect motorcycles in the US are much cheaper than in OZ......
-
You can probably buy a bike here for less than it will cost to ship yours, then sell it or store it here.
-

Commonsense says take the V85, passion says take the Norge.
I would prefer to take the Norge and wish I hadn’t, than leave it home and wish I hadn’t.
These trips need a sense of “daring” and taking the V85 would be like kissing your sister…
Really easy, but no “spark…”

The ultimate freedom is knowing you had the choice and are in a privileged enough position to take the scarier option.
I think the late great JFK put it best when he said…
“We choose to go to the States (sic) and do the other things.
Not because they are easy…
But because they are hard…
I actually considered bringing my Honda CT110, can you imagine the thrill of crossing the Golden Gate on an Australian registered postie bike ?
If I was looking for ultimate safety and coddling,I would do it in a Toyota Prius with a beige button up cardigan and apricot cravat..

I’m surprised you even asked the question. Your faithful Norge is without question the one to take to Murica.
It won’t fail you. And even if it does, that in itself would be part of your epic journey.

-
Given the choice the Norge just fits your plans here in the US perfect. Plus you love the thing, so that helps. As you well know not a ton of dealers, but odds are if you break down, and need some quick parts, or help, Im guessing most of the people you would find here will know/have more stuff, that will get the norge back up and running.
-
The 85 is not a lock on reliability. Nor is any safety guaranteed. All we can do is manage our risk every time we mount our lovely beast to go riding that makes little sense to non riders who don't have the same appreciation or understanding why put ourselves in harms way.
-
Thanks both of you guys.
I just got out of an Uber and the guy was telling me some horror stories regarding riding a motorbike in the U.S.
I’ve done a hundred thousand kilometres in Europe on my Norge in major cities and rural environments, I did not perceive any heightened risk from other road users, above and beyond that which I see here in Australia, other than the ever present (for me), hazard of remembering to ride on the right hand side.
My question is…
Presuming I have the normal amount of road sense and situational awareness, what are the major do’s and do not’s regarding riding in traffic.
What is the easiest way to upset someone and what are the likely (for me) repercussions ?
-

Nothing you don't already know about. " THE What if's" never end. Just because you think it does not make it true. Situational awareness..

Lane splitting or lane filtering is not common in the U.S., only a couple of states have it. You can't ride Italian style here in the U.S. or people get mad if you go to the front of the line...they'll think you are cutting them off. If you're going to ride on the shoulder to avoid a traffic jam, do so relatively slowly (20-25 mph) or someone may pull over on you just to prevent you from getting ahead. If they see you are doing it slowly and not racing style, they'll likely leave you alone.

IMO, human nature is pretty consistent. I doubt you will find American drivers to be any different from drivers in other countries.
Do keep in mind that the cultures over here vary a lot in just a few dozen miles. Big cities are almost always more "cut & thrust!"
One trend I have noticed, that seems to be only 10-15 years old, is that the most aggressive, inattentive, unaware, inconsiderate, and dangerous drivers on the road seem to be young Mothers in minivans with kids!!!
Maybe the kids are driving them insane to the point where their survival instincts are telling them that death via motor vehicles will be less painful than their current existence?
Back in the day it was young males with excess testosterone that one needed to be wary of. They seem to be a very small percentage of drivers these days.
SemperVee is right. Situational Awareness!
-
Okay.
Keep those cards and letters coming in…
-
Try to avoid interstate highways, especially near cities, aggressive and discourteous drivers would just as soon run you off the road as let you go .Drivers of big pickup trucks seem to need to show everyone how powerful their overpriced rigs are, especially to motorcyclists.Avoid night driving, plenty of deer and drunk drivers all over.
-
Okay, copy that.
-

Young females whether they have kids or are a group to keep an eye on. They are either in lala land or just think traffic laws don't apply to them. Also speed limits are only suggestions here.

Ive had the best luck on highways to be just a tick faster then the main flow.. watch out on onramps, and off ramps. Expect a car next to you to pull onto your lane. Other then passing through the big cities, I find highways safer myself... no cross traffic pulling out. Some areas are aggressive about pulling over speeders.. Watch your speed in small towns. Really avoid city surface streets at all cost IMHO... or cities in general. If you do drive through a city be mindfull of "rush hour " times. 7-8am, and really anytime after 3 pm to about 6 can be rough. I like the old pre highway system main roads.. Other then that, im sure its just like anywhere else in the world.. watch out for others, and in the country watch out for animals' at dusk.

I've got a spare bedroom and tools available just north of Cincinnati, Ohio if you end up in the area. Garage is full of projects but I'm sure we could squeeze in there if you had work to do. Also only about 20 minutes from the best Guzzi dealer ever, Cadre Cycle!

You are welcome in NW Connecticut assuming you get there and the timing works out. There is a very basic barn for your Norge with nothing more than a leaky roof and another Red 2007 Norge for company. Should your 300K Norge have issues, this 100K Norge can pinch hit. Should you decide to travel a bit further north and leave from "our" Atlantic Ocean, there is aways the New Jersey Shore.
You are welcome!

That is 30 offers I have so far…
Don’t forget, any one of you guys can use my V85 if you come to Australia. That would work out to secure accomodation every second night roughly, if my trip was as long as usual… :thumb:

Loads of options. :cheesy:

I didn't mention that I have a pretty decent shop but I assume that most of us do as MG has been making mechanics out of riders foe over a hundred years. I also have a couple of auto parts stores and a motorcycle repair shop less than a half mile away.

Huzo, if you get anywhere in Texas, let me know and I will seek you out. I’d really like to meet you.

Apparently sooner in Straya has more of a nuclear time definition than it does in some parts of the US......
Looks like lots of great potential destinations. You will glean lots of stories and memories to last a liftime no doubt.
Hopefully, you will be able to stop by!
Based on your pin locations, Wild Guzzi types seem to herd a lot more than I would have thought.
It might be sense of humor related.....

"A Who riding a What?"

Have you figured out the dates for the trip?
Not yet, no.
There are a couple of things that still have to tumble the right way, but I’ll arrange it so the temperatures are tolerable as far South as Texas and North as Canada.
If the range was as cold as 15 degrees C and warm as 30 degrees C, then that would be good.
I would think that early/mid Autumn (Fall), would be the way to go ?
-
If you don’t like heat and don’t mind cold in the morning late September early October is the best.A bonus are the fall colors as shown in Dave Swanson s photos .There can be rain then, fall is my favorite season for touring.

59 F (15 C) to 86 F (30 C) is a very narrow comfort temperature range for such a huge geographical area.
For most of the places I've lived (as far south as Texas and as far north as New York), that type of temerprature variation in a even single day day is not unusual. Locally, a 2500 foot change in elevation can change temperature by 20 F (about 11 C).
HUGE variation in temperature over here given even 200 miles difference North or South.
Expecting even one week of that kind of temperature stability in most of the continental US is asking for Divine intervention.
Based on your pin locations, anytime from early March to late November is fair game for good riding. I'm sure you have lots of experience on how to dress for weather.
Don't believe the US news about the Great Lakes boiling off.....

Hey Huzo, We are in Bellingham, WA just south of the BC border. A great jumping off spot to roll into BC or over the Cascades to visit Simon. Also lots of shop tools. email to doansci at g mail
It would be fun to meet you.
Fare warning - I've always wanted to visit Australia

Fall is hands down the BEST season for riding for me.
You might want to start north in the early fall and travel south
as fall progresses. Snow in October is NOT unheard of in northern
areas of the US. September can also have some warm days.
OC to 29C, (32F to 85F) Would be a range of temperatures to prepare
for. You wouldn't necessarily ride all day at 0C, but you'd likely start an
early morning at somewhere near that temp. In the south, you'd certainly
encounter temps in the 80s F, even in October.
Fall does have the advantage that most of the touristas are gone - except for
leaf-peepers - and the kids are all back in school. Weekday traffic in scenic areas
is therefore much reduced; although keep in mind some touristy parks and suchlike
may be closed for the season.
Still, I love fall for riding.

Huzo: coming from down under, I’m assuming it is not hot weather that concerns you, but cold. If so, get yourself an electric vest and worry not.

I'm not sure how things are your way, but lately many motorcycle dealers will not keep a variety of tires in stock. Many of them will not accept ride -in maintenance without an appointment. Many of them require you to bring them the wheels and will not loan tools or a lift for you to remove them. IF you can guesstimate your need for tires, you could pre order them and have them delivered to WGers along the way. There is a motorcycle accessory shop called Cycle Gear who will mount tires brought in on the wheels. Here is a page with their locations nation wide: https://www.cyclegear.com/stores . They also sell helmets and M/C gear as their name suggests.

Frankly September in the northeast is the best month of the year for riding. Its normally much dryer then spring time is, and still has nice warm days, and the nights are just getting a little cool. Perfect. If you do make it into the northeast you will have some of the best riding in the country, and if you hit the time right the IMOC rally [ https://www.imoc.website/ ] is normally early September.
-
Thanks you guys. :thumb:

guess depends a little on where in Cdn and if ,but would say no later then September .Can get frosty already in late August .
-
The Ontario Guzzi Riders annual rally in Lavigne, Ont (near Sudbury) is usually the last weekend in August.
Temps are in the single digits (Celsius) overnight with heavy fog in the low-lying areas.
Heated riding gear is a good idea.

It looks like you have the northeast and northwest covered, but how about the Rocky Mountains?
We live in Berthoud, Colorado near Rocky Mountain National Park. Trail Ridge Road climbs to 12183 ft/3713 m and is less than 60 miles/100 k from my house. We can offer bed and breakfast, and a shop with lift and tire changer.

Huzo, no idea where you may be, but 20-23 July I am riding the Natchez Trace parkway from Nashville TN to Natchez MS, then over to the South Entrance of the Blue Ridge parkway, and North up the whole length of the Parkway end to end including Skyline Drive. Plan to pull off and camp, or hotel/motel if available. Start point is Fort Knox KY early on the 20th and I will close in on my house in Alexandria VA for dinner on the 23rd. Need to be back as I am catching a flight to Paris at 1700 on the 24th.
Faster and more mileage than ideal, but this is my 'get out of jail ride' (AKA Army Retirement) so gonna just ride and start the process of washing 23+ years of combat out of my blood. I'll be on the 1200 Sport, You are welcome to try to keep up ;-)

Thank you for the invitation Bulldog.
You are also now on the list of subjects.
When you say a “flight to Paris…”
Is that Paris Texas, Paris France or Paris (sic) Island…?

Not a good idea to be in a hurry when riding a long trip unless on interstate.50 mph limits and really hot weather .Take that ride in the fall when it is cool and you have lots of time.

They usually work out to around 6 - 7 weeks and 15,000 - 20,000 km.
