Title: Choose 2020 V85 or later?
Post by: Bpreynolds2 on January 11, 2024, 10:59:27 AM
Giving thought again to getting a V85 given the crazy deals happening on them new and also now used.

I understand that 2021 forward got the tubeless wheels and some mechanical upgrades maybe.  Other then tubeless aspect, are the other updgrades to the newer models that significant in terms of riding experience?

I would buy the newest i.e. 2023, with the deals they have currently.
Get the red, white and blue one!

I would opt for the 2020 year model.

Reasons:
Probably get the lowest price based as compared to newer units.
I personally prefer spokes to cast rims.
I am becoming seriously against tech. so the less the better.

The 2021, 22, 23, and 24 (most models) tubeless rims have spokes.  The 2024 V85 Strada does have cast wheels.

IMO, the first time you pick up a nail and can easily get yourself going again you will be patting yourself on the back that you went with 2021+.

And most important of all the tubeless rims look cooler.

Although I would like cast wheels instead of spokes just for the “keepin em clean” factor.
Good luck!

The 21+ wheels look like Teflon coating and don't get dirty.

The Guzzi Low Comfort.  It is 3/4" lower than stock.  It is very tolerable for all day rides.

I do hold that view David, but I would swap in an instant if given the opportunity. I would much prefer the black, outboard spoke design…( then I’d dismantle and polish them…)

The biggest advantage of the newest model in my mind may be the variable cam timing that will give the engine some much needed additional torque.  With my 2020 you really do need to rev it to go anywhere, the engine character does not match what the bike appears to be visually.  Otherwise I chose my 2020 for a reason - the emissions control stuff is slightly less invasive, meaning for example that you can remove the evaporative system completely without lights coming on.  I updated to 2021 wheels for about $1000.  And I don’t like the cheapening up of the newest bike via replacement of the nice steel tube brackets with die cast aluminum.

I’m really tiring of ‘modern’ vehicles.  My 2017 car recently had an air mass flow sensor failure, which should not be a big deal given that it’s a $200 part that takes five minutes to swap.  Unfortunately I had to drive it 30 miles to get it repaired, it ran fine over idle but that damaged the first of two catalytic converters, the one that only functions for initial warm-up.  And OBTW one fuel injector also needed replacement to get the light to go out, although the car was running fine with only the $200 part replaced. Long story short, total repair cost was over $3000.  Pointless tech drives costs into the stratosphere, and it’s the same for motorcycles.

The other benefit of the E4 bike is the use of the 7SM ECU, which allows the use of Guzzidiag and Beetle Maps.   The new E5 bikes use the 11MP ECU, which is not supported in GD.  You can use UpMap, though.

Cheers,
Shaun

Still waiting to hear if the 2024 needs shims for valve adjustment and the price of course.....

Adding variable cam timing won’t likely affect the valve adjustment design.  Assuming it’s an entirely mechanical setup, my interest would be adding it to a 2020 model with appropriate fuel map changes to get the best of both bikes.  I’ll be riding mine today with my wife and will doubtless be reminded that more low and midrange torque is needed.

Me too!  And, was wondering if the Travel & Adventure models use the same bag brackets?  From what I understand the Travel has side open bags and the Adventure has top open cans.  I guess I prefer a Travel with spam cans (vs. luggage) and wonder how doable it is.   Yeah, by the time I quit procrastinating all new & used will be gone :violent1:

Some of the’19 and ‘20s had issues with using lots of oil, these Euro 4 are easier to tune the bike like beatle maps.

Hi TWA,
Thanks for the feedback.  I don't know what my apprehension is towards the side loaders....I'm running HB30's on my Lemanses w/o issues.  I guess I've just become more used to the top loaders because of my previous experiences with them on my wee strom and the top loaders have slightly more capacity.  IDK,

I read somewhere, possibly here, that a potential buyer called and said they'd be right out to pick up this bike for the advertised price.  After a few phone hand offs within the dealership the price was actually around $1500 to $2,000 higher, before tax.  Dealership fees.

Yes, I originally had a post about this and then deleted it because I don’t like the idea of me trashing a dealer that I once worked with successfully on a new bike.  But it is true, otd quoted to me is/was over $9600 before taxes.  How do I say this in a nice way so as not to be insulting nor sway folks away from Sloan’s entirely?  I’m not sure I can.  I will say they have been a Guzzi dealer now for a good long while so they are not some multi-brand place who picked the marquee up on whim and dropped it 3 years later (happens often).  And others on here have good experiences there.  And this was not a bad experience for me on this bike; in truth, it is/was about what I expected.  They are a multi-brand dealer and there’s a lot that goes along with that if you want to buy a bike there.  And I mean nearly ANY multi-brand dealer.  You likely ARE going to have to talk to two or even more people to get the straight story, final price.  And then that won’t be the final price.  You’ll say no, they will call you back with a new price 30 minutes later, etc., etc.  And yes, that is what happened here.  If you are willing to play the game - and I have with many multi-brand places over the years - you might ultimately still get a great deal but you better be ready to haggle, talk to multiple people, go back and forth on end, and so forth.  Sloan’s is not doing anything different than most mult-brand places, at least in my experience.  Not knocking them so much.  But for me to buy a bike there over a strictly Guzzi spot, it would have to be a nearly crazy deal which is how I got my then new, leftover 2011 Stelvio from them.  I actually think that if I stuck with them on this one and kept answering their calls - they are still calling me - I probably could have gotten the otd price down closer maybe 9 or shoot, even better maybe.  Also keep in mind that it is fair and usual for even exclusive dealers to charge around $700-$800 for either freight, prep, or whatever.  Our most highly praised, celebrated dealers on this site do this and I’m not saying this to shame them but just saying what Sloan’s asked me for this bike is twice that much in basically the same charges but I suspect if I was willing to play the game, I could have gotten it significantly closer to what most other, even exclusive dealers charge.  But just saying.

They are a family owned multi=brand dealership instead of a corporation multi-brand, multi-dealerships.

I agree that they are old school when it comes to purchasing and will get the most they can out of someone making an emotional purchase.

I had to negotiate hard on my 2022 purchase, but not so much on my 2018.  Changing times.  The sale price on this leftover is all Moto Guzzi discounts.  You shouldn't pay more than $500 above that IMO.

Bottom line, when you advertise a bike for a "selling price" of $7999 but the advertisement should have stated $9600 that is at best deceptive advertising.

I can’t speak for the motorcycle industries but am pretty sure it is the same as automotive and am willing to bet at least $.50 that it is the same.
There should be no prep fee, dealers are paid by the MFG for a prep. It was billed back to the MFG when complete.
They charge you for a prep because you pay for a prep, don’t. I never have and never will.
They will charge freight, the dealer is responsible for that cost and is passed on to the consumer. Be careful though, they can and will inflate the charge if they can get away with it, you can see the actual cost on the MFG website, most  will note that in the pricing. Administrative fees can also be elevated, they do pay their employees and there are fees to the dealer (title/registration) this I have seen super inflated.
Never pay over MSRP, never pay prep fees, never pay market adjustment, never believe dealer cost (even if they show paperwork regarding this, it’s BS) have them explain the administrative costs.
They got away with a lot during the flu season but what goes around comes around, don’t be emotional and in a hurry. If you find a good dealer, support them. They are rare but out there.

You mention this a lot and I understanding your frustration but you should try and let it go so it doesn’t muddy your experience with your new bike. It can cause you to start to dislike the bike and that usually doesn’t end up well and can be expensive.

It won't discourage me with the bike. BUT it is the fourth bike I have bought from this dealer network and not a one of the purchases has been pleasant overall. One wasn't even a Guzzi, one of the purchases was an absolute nightmare. For one of them it over four months for the paperwork to go through including the finances resulting in my being reported to the credit agencies as being two months behind in payments which I was finally able to fix. I have given them enough chances to get it right, no more. But I love my Guzzis.
