Title: NGC, Vertigo!
Post by: bobrebos1 on February 07, 2024, 09:34:58 PM
I’ve had it for a week now.  Lost my balance and fell down three times this week alone.  The dizziness sucks.  I’m taking meclazine (sp) with no help/improvement yet.  Walk like I’m drunk a lot!  This sucks!!!!  Can’t ride any motorcycle with this!!!!

Try RinkRats suggestion - it worked for me. Not to be an alarmist but if nothing is helping then have a CT scan. A stroke in the balance center - cerebellum - could be the problem. Good luck.

There are "stones" in the inner ear. Once out of place in the fluid thar is in the spiral part of the inner ear the stones need to be repositioned. I have had this condition several times, I have never accomplished the repositioning on my own though I have tried. A visit to a qualified physical therapist has never failed me. All that being said there are many causes for vertigo. Get help, soon as.

Man I gotta admit when I read this I was thinking “this sounds like some hokey boloney” and yet I googled it and what do you know!

Amazing! Love learning new things.

Try the head positioning exercises first. If the "crystals" are the only problem, that will help.  Here are some exercises that will help regain balance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olgEtOKAGaI    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Au1Sjx2pH8  I had the bad luck to have the ear crystals AND menieres disease. I had to go to a specialist. She took high speed video of my eye movements, and other tests to make the determination. I was referred to a physical therapist who had me do both the head crystal movements, and exercises like the ones in the video. Luckily, the exercises helped to the point I can drive or ride. It took time, and there were days I knew better than to get out of bed. But these days I can feel it coming. I found that certain foods triggered the attacks, and I avoid them. Do go get checked out. Keep benydryl near by. Take care!

My wife had Vertigo and the Eply maneuver solved her problem, she had to do it a few times but it finally worked. A few years later she had it again but not quite as bad and she did the exercise and that cured the problem.

I talked to Wes Stephens a few weeks ago and he was dealing with a bout of Vertigo so I mentioned the Eply maneuver and I believe it helped him too.

I had a middle ear infection one time resulting in similar issues.

Standing up to pee was completely out of the question!

An antibiotic, valium, and bed rest cured it.

Good Luck!

I've had it but not as severe. It would only trigger if I was looking up to either side. Woke up with it the first time it happened and it was scary, the whole room was spinning. It lasted a few months but fortunately I was still able to ride. Was seeing an Ear Nose Throat doctor for it and they had me doing the maneuvers and medication but pretty much admitted they really don't know that much about it and eventually it goes away on it's own. They did say once you have it the chances of getting it again are greatly increased. Knock wood....

I've had it twice~both times the "head banging" exercise cleared it up. I had read about it when race car driver Terry LaBonte had come down with it and that is what helped him after missing a race.
As noted by others, it is more than a little scary!!!

I had a severe case that put me in the hospital when I was 27 years old for 9 days and Lost 32 lbs of weight as i was in complete state of Vertigo for weeks on end and could not stop vomiting. Consequently I have never since gotten drunk for fear of the spins again.  Released from hospital & Stayed home in bed for 30 days and had to give up martial arts training forever as tumbling was out of the question.  I think MC riding helped me with my balance issues and still deal with it 40 years later.  WOULD not wish this on anyone, **cept my ex.   Life is fragile.

I've had it too, the maneuvers seemed to get me thru it after a couple of weeks.

I went thru a lesser version back 35 years ago when I was in my 30's.  It was more like my head and body weren't sync'd.  It lasted a few days at a time.  Sometimes popping me ears would help, sometimes not.  It just went away over time.  Maybe occasional flare-ups but not in recent memory.

I had reverse slope hear loss and the UC docs figured it was Merniere's Disease.

I'm still riding two wheels but when I feel "touched" I ride a Guzzi 850T with a sidecar or not at all.

It's a matter of accommodating my infirmities of my now 70 years.

I’m 67 years young this coming august and starting to feel it!

Physical therapy was a life saver for me. Epley maneuver, but applied by someone who knew exactly what to do. It was incredible.

I was struck with Vertigo on Sept 23 last year while riding. After an 8 hour stay in the hospital I was released and told it would pass in 3 to 4 weeks. I was immobile for three weeks and could not drive for 5 weeks. An inner ear viral
Infection had damaged one of the vestibular vessels and I am still working on rewiring my brain to deal with it. Some are luckily and a physiotherapist can try the Ebly Manoeuvre to reposition crystals in the vestibular system.
Go and see a physiotherapist with experience treating vertigo, it didn’t work for me but it’s worth a try.

Count me as another who had vertigo.  It took multiple PT visits but the Eply did fix it in the end.  It was almost like flicking a light switch when it finally worked, amazing.  It was also weird that the PT could see the episode hit a fraction of a second before it hit me because my eyes would start spinning all over trying to find a horizon (they had goggles on me with cameras as they did the Eply).

A few years ago any time my head tilted to the left or I laid on my left side I would be so dizzy I couldn’t tell which way was up. Really scary. I couldn’t walk or move - just wait til it passed. This went on for a couple months. Started doing Epley maneuvers and it went away gradually. No problems since.

I had to go to a hearing specialist yesterday due to a loss of hearing in my left ear.
I inquired about the issue that’s being discussed here on the forum in this thread.
The Doctor told me that the initial action in these cases should be a visit to ones PCP, that in many cases they can alleviate the issue without the assignment of a specialist and if not then a referral can be made.

Another guy with Menieres Disease here. Would not wish it on my worst enemy! The Eply maneuver does nothing for me but dietary changes, rest and hydration has worked wonders for me. It's been more than 5 years since I've had an episode and I admit that getting back on 2 wheels was a decision I put alot of thought into. So far, so good but I always have meclazine with me just in case I feel it coming on. I purposely avoid strange head angles or quick head movements when possible.

I have a cochlear implant to supplement being deaf on the left but cannot wear it under my full face Helmet, my Half helmet is no problem though, aside from wind noise.

For me, it has gone from a debilitating Disease to a sometimes inconvenient situation. Depending on severity, it can be a microsecond or hours in duration. I put myself in a dark room with a small trash can to puke in, pop a few pills and ride it out. Then sleep away the exhaustion following.

My advice is to first find out if it is BPV (crystals) or Menieres. Learn what triggers episodes for you and avoid them. Keep a box of over the counter Bonine pills (25mg meclazine) with you and live your best life.
