Hello all,
Introduced myself in the topic for that, so I'll start asking questions.
I did search the forum but did not find any information regarding my friends Breva 850.
On dash start up, his dash shows Breva 1100 on the display while clearly beeing a 850.
Our question is, what could be the reason? Was the dashboard changed at some point, and fitted a 1100? Everything works normally so far, so we're hopping its trivial.
Other weird thing is she is filled with oil over the MAX on the dipstick, planned service next week but still surprised about the overfill?! I've read all over that Guzzis don't like to be on the MAX line.
Thank you all in advance, and if I didn't post in correct category please excuse me, or move the topic.
Regards

Not sure about the 1100 vs 850 question on the dash display but the over fill on the dipstick is only a concern if you are checking it with the bike vertical. Are you pulling the dipstick while the bike is on the side stand? If so, then check it while holding the bike up.

Hey Skippy, thanks for a fast reply!
We checked the oil as stated in the manual, after a 20ish min ride, while on the center stand and on the ground while one of us holding it vertical. And also checked while cold.
It's like 4-5mm above MAX.
We're servicing our bikes next week, so will monitor it when we give it fresh oil.
The dash question is more if should we be worried, since it's bought as is from a dealer in Itally. She has 23.000km on the clock, 2006, the dealer was stating he's giving 12month warranty in Italy (obviously not for us, just for Italy) so that gave us some hope that the bike is not trash and should be in a OK state.

If it is a large bike it is a 1100,a small Breva is a 750.What does the title say?
-
Oh it's a 850, it's rare, I think they made it only for Europe and in smaller numbers.
The 750 is smaller and different dash, different bike

Good discussion on the 850s from about 6 or 7 years ago.

Looked up 850 Breva and learned that I don’t know everything about Guzzis but they used the same bike for the 850; as the 1100 so the dash is the same,I think.
-
Well, ya learn something every day. Never knew they made an 850.
I guess they put the Bellagio engine in it.
-
Nearly but not quite....the two share the same crank and heads but the Bella has bigger bores
-
Ye it wasnt introduced into US market.
On the topic of startup screen, I'm guessing it is independent of the ECU, and they swapped it at some point in life

My 2014 Stelvio with the big gas tank came with the dash from the earlier model with the small tank so it indicates that the tank is empty when I have around 2 gallons left.Maybe some 850s came with 1100 dashes because they had them on hand.Probably nothing to worry about.

Interesting, I just went out to the shed to check my B850 dash and doesn't display "850" or "1100", just Moto Guzzi.
FYI the part number for the 850 and 1100 dashboard are the same - 05760030 for EU and AU.
With the overfilled engine oil, make sure the airbox is cleaned out, if the bike has been run for any time with an overfilled (or even filled to the top mark) sump the excess will end up in the airbox and end up in the throttle bodies.
Cheers

Europe had 850cc Breva, Griso, and Norge variants.
Same bikes as the 1100/1200 versions, except for bore/stroke.

Bellagio was unique. 850 crank and 1200 cylnders for 935cc. (95mm bore x 66mm stroke)
The 850s used 1100 cylinders for 877cc. (92mm bore x 66mm stroke)

I've never heard of the Breva 850, but if they did what they did with the Griso, it is likely the 1100 with the exception of the Motor. I know they did Griso 850 which was almost identical to the 1100 bikes with the main exception of the motor. The 750 Breva is a small block and completely different bike, basically a V7 classic mechanically.
My guess is given the frequency of failure of the Breva/Norge dash units, you probably have a used 1100 Dash in yours. If all works, I wouldn't worry about it. This make me want to go down to my 1200 Sport Breva and turn on the key, because I can't/dont recall any identification of Model on the dash unit. The Griso has it though.
**Edit. The 1200 Sport Dash says Moto Guzzi on Startup.
When I bought my 1200 Sport , it came with a Norge Dash. Wanting to get the bike to 100%, I bit the Bullet and bought a new Correct dash for it in 2020.

Thanks all,
Our assumption is the same, that the dash was changed at some point in life.
One less thing to worry about :)
Just changed all the fluids, filters, sparkplugs etc.
She's a good runner! The gearbox is silky smooth to my brand new V7 850 which has not been run-in yet

I don't think it is important but as the B850 and B1100 are the same units they will look and behave exactly the same, so fitting a dash from an 1100 will make no difference whatsoever.
I'm still wondering where and when does the dash display Breva 1100. Mine, like Bulldogs 1200 Sport only displays Moto Guzzi.
More importantly the other main difference between the 850 and 1100 beside the short stroke is that the motor is only single spark and not twin spark.
It is an easy change to make as the heads are identical with the 850 having a plug in the inner spark plug position. Remove this, buys some coils from any of the 2v 1100 and 1200 models and hit up Mark @ griso.org for a map and your bike will be even more fun.

Is the mileage questionable, considering that 99% the dash has been changed. Is it stored on the dash itself or the ECU?

The mileage is stored in the dash

Well, it *is* a Guzzi. "Grab an 1100 dash out of the parts bin, and stick it on there, Luigi..they work the same."
-
Oh yes, it is a Guzzi - the 1200 Sport dash, which appears to be identical except for the colour of the face and the fonts used, did not work on my bike - the pin outs are different and it wouldn't operate the indicators!

It is pretty easy to move the pins around, something I have done to several bike harness' when I have changed stuff. Like on my Virago based bike, which have alternator, starter, ignition system and "brain" from the second generation, but instruments and fuse box from the first generation. Also built a CB400SF cafe racer with a Kawa Eliminator headlight and aftermarket instruments, but kept the main harness intact by using the old contacts with new pins on the new stuff I fitted.
