Title: loop frame throttle splitter delete?
Post by: DodgeBoy on February 22, 2024, 02:09:17 AM
Hi,

my 72 Eldo has the factory setup where the Tommaselli single throttle cable gets divided by the cable splitter under the gas tank. I allready had the splitter disassembled, cleaned and greased but it seems I still have some issues with the intended free play on the carbs swaps beteween okay and getting to tight. I can only assume it has to do with the splitter being a fiddly thing?

Is it worth it to delete that throttle splitter by using a dual cable throttle setup? Plus i allways have the feeling that the short throttle cables from carb to splitter are way to tight pressed under the tank causing them to get rubbed blank at the lower tank seam...

Not on a Guzzi but I've run both options on my '72 Triumph Bonnevile at one time or another over the past 30 years, can't say I've ever noticed a difference.

I used this throttle for my G5 rebuild.  Easy install but getting cables the right length with the right fittings was tricky for me.  I ended up refitting cables by cutting and soldering on new throttle ends. Splitters are a pain but verbal easier for me.

Going with a 2C throttle is a good "upgrade" if you want to get away from the splitter. You'll also need "flip chokes" for on the carburetors. If you have to buy a new 2C and cables, you're looking at over $100 though - only you can answer if it's "worth" it.

Thanks guys.

I just had an option to buy a rare NOS Tommaselli SuperPratic 2C throttle online. It is the dual version of the orignally used SuperPratic B that is installed on my bike right now so it is kind of a period correct modification one could say. It was not that cheap though...  :weiner:

Good thing is I am soldering my own cables from time to time so I can make them to the right dimensions.

Thanks for the hint with the manual flip chokes. I will think about if I wanna delete the the splitter completely or leave the choke splitter in... barely touching the choke tbh.

My 73 Eldorado was converted to a Tomaselli dual cable throttle.  I kept the splitter and cables for choke activation.  Doing regular throttle balance maintenance is a whole lot easier with the double cable system.  Adjustments are up at the hand mechanism.

On my 73 eldorado, I also installed a 2C throttle, and got rid of the splitter. I also installed a "tonti type" choke lever. Its much easier for me to balance the carbs, with the two adjusters up by the throttle. The dual super practic looks cool! I never knew they made that.

Please report back about your results with the twin cable Superpractic throttle.  I assume it’s like a single cable Superpractic throttle with the chain assist (yours would likely have two chains) that is original equipment on many Ducati singles.

On those bikes, it’s pretty common to change those to a simplified Daytona throttle for regularly ridden bikes.  As the chain ages and degrades in a SuperPratic, the throttle action can suffer.  Sticky throttles are not cool…

Not fun when the pin in the chain brakes at the cup for the ball on the cable. A paperclip got me home.

Yes I let you know but it will take a few days.

The 1C SuperPratic on my bike is quite old thats why i inspected the chain once. It has some play but the links seemed to be firm. But yes it might be a critical component.

Not sure what you mean with sticky. If the chain brakes the carbs loose throttle... Not pleasent by any means but i don't think it would cause an accident. Or did you mean if only one brakes on a 2c setup?

What i am wondering: some 2c twistgrips have cable adjustment screws right on the grip. The SuperPratic doesnt have these. Do i need to install some or will the setup screws on the carbs be enough?

As long as the chain(s) are kept lubed, chain breakage on the Superpratic throttles isn't an issue IMO. The one on my '69 Ambo has 111k miles on it and is still in great condition.

The "big" 2C uses cables that have an elbow and adjust at the top, they're not on the throttle itself.

When fitting a non-standard throttle, cables can be an issue.

I have Twin Pull Tommaselli 2C on V50 III. It was pretty cheap at 66 GBP in 2019 & I made the cables with Venhill kit & added adjusters at the top to make it easy. Choke is the classic splitter based lever mounted down next to LHS intake - only needs about 30 seconds even when really cold.

If I was you. For the choke cables. Look at the pic in this ad on Ebay, MG Cycle I think sells the lever and housing. Do your research for prices:

The link was too long and mess with this page. Search for this:
Moto Guzzi 1000 California II 2 VT 1982 - choke cables choke lever A1081

MG Cycle no body clamp and you will need the cables.

As mentioned just get the Tommaselli 2C from MG cycles. Also get the cables from them for either civilian or police bars.

For the choke lever I used one of these https://www.ebay.com/itm/275463177852
I like the original choke on my Ambassador so I retained the splitter and used it for only the choke. I also put a spring inside the splitter to put tension on the cables so with a gob of freeplay the ends of the choke cables wouldn’t come out of their sockets when the choke was off. I see the one I linked to is for a one inch bar but there are similar ones for a 7/8” bar.

For those of you who are interested and since that 2c SuperPratic-B twist grip seems to be quite rare: That is the breakdown of the NOS one I just got. The screw in type cable ends were still in the chain ends so I suppose you can say it was never installed or fiddled around with... I just had to clean it because all the grease was hardned up after around 50 years in storage.

Unfortunatelly the seller did not mention that he does not have the second rubber grip with the twist grip. It is sad because I really like the haptics. Its much better than the ballon type "Granturismo" grips and a bit harder than the waffle type grips from the other earlier Moto Guzzis (and they look nicer imho). I would love to get the missing left hand grip... does someone know where to get one or how they are called? Its marked with AR-021. Since the Granturismos show 004 I assume the number represents the series?

I am still not sure if I will go with adjustment screws on the twist grip side or if the adjustment screws on the carbs will be enough... Since I will make my own pair of throttle cables I ll get sure they measure the exact same lenght...so maybe one adjustment side would be okay?
