1984 850 T5
cleaned carbs and installed new intake gaskets.
The bike runs perfectly with the choke on. Turn off the choke and the rpms skyrocket.
Any idea why this would happen?

Provided everything is adjusted correctly. Sounds like an air leak. You may have some holes in the manifolds for balancing, you did plug those? Sure your manifold gaskets are sealing?
Could be other things, just a place to start.

Make sure all your cables have at least 2mm slack when slide is all way down and idle screw backed out.

Make sure that you didn't put the slides in backwards.

intake manifold gaskets are new and sealed. Also sealed the intake balancing screw holes.
I will check the slack in the cables.
Could it be head gaskets?

I did that once when I first got the T. If I remember right, it wouldn't run at all. But it's easy to do cause they fit either way. Sounds like an air leak somewhere to me, running way too lean.

Is it one side or both? Maybe the slide is hanging up.

Are you sure the choke is connected correctly? If all else is ok, it sounds like off is really on. Which carbs?
If the choke is ok, you likely have an air leak somewhere. It's not the head gaskets. Did you balance the carbs? Set the idle speed? A vacuum gauge set will tell you a lot.

Happened once to me on my Eldo carbs after cleaning them and re-installing over winter.

Turns out I had one needle set lower than the other. But that was on a vhb 29 carb. It acted just like a serious air leak.

Your hints worked.
- Adjusted the throttle cables to give more slack (needed)
- And I think one of the slides was hanging up just because of where the cable ended up after the gas tank was put back on..
Running smoother than ever.
Work completed recently
* New Points
* Static and Light timing (LARGE Learning experience)
* Left points distributor plate customized for timing adjustment
* New Condensers
* New intake manifold gaskets
* Disassembled both carbs and cleaned
* Floats adjusted
* New Air filter
* New Plugs
Carbs adjusts by ear and trial and error.
Running well, Better than i remember.

Thanks for this one about the needles. Been fighting with the T3 for a bit as port was running hotter than starboard. Pulled the tops and sure enough port was a notch deeper into the slide. Runs better now. Thanks.
