Stelvio clutch went out east of Heberon Duschene county line.93000 miles on bike.Any suggestions appreciated.
-
Do you have someone coming to get you & bike? Big ticket fix, no easy swap out. You need Cal14 flywheel & clutch. that's the fix.
Closest dealer is Idaho Falls or Colorado Springs
-
Idaho Falls is where my brother lives. It's the closer of the two dealers. He's having shoulder surgery tomorrow so he really can't be of much use. But I'll mention your plight when he calls me today. Sorry about your trouble.
-
Thanks John but hauling it home.
-
Sensible. Watch out for buffalo!
-
Gonna be expensive.

Oh CRAP! I just saw this. I am near Ogden, I have a truck and an enclosed trailer. What is your immediate status? You can call me or text me 801-589-4725.

What exactly happened? What did you hear, feel or smell? Check the transmission fluid for fragments. I would think that if the transmission failed at speed you wound hear and feel something from the transmission area and know 90% what it was. Did you pull the clutch and couldn’t change gears or did it just make a new sound. Did the clutch pull start feeling odd prior. What about the plunger in the clutch reservoir? (Assuming it’s hydraulic like a Norge) My plunger failed with zero warning. Does the clutch lever pull the same as before? Sorry for your breakdown hope you get home with no more stress.

Riding about 65bike began to lose speed,no abrupt noise or anything, could shift gears but no effect, engine running normally.I had just ridden down from Guardsman pass a steep narrow 10%grade and everything was fine, stopped for breakfast and rode about 50 miles then it quit. The bike will roll in gear.I have been lucky to get a guy trailer it to a storage lot near Fruitland.NowI will hitch a ride to Decesne and meet my wife who is driving on the way to our family reunion nearTelluride tomorrow. What goes around usually comes around and I have met some really friendly helpful folks. We always try to help other riders when we can. Thanks for all your concern and advice any other theories?

Jeez this reminds me of my plight in France where I knew I was not alone.
If you’re hauling it home, I hope you can gain some enjoyment from the experience from here on in…
It will make the whole thing more meaningful, if you take us on your journey through to its conclusion.
Good luck.
-
Glad you got some help there, have a good reunion.

Hitched a ride to decesne and am basking in the ac of my wife’s motel room,Mexican restaurant down the block so we might have a margarita or2 before bed, haven’t seen each other for 2 weeks. As the saying goes ,how can I miss you if you don’t go away.

I once broke down in Duchesne when I was moving the family from Colo to California. I had an old beater Chevy PU and as I was pulling into town lost all power. I determined the timing chain had slipped. The repair shop across the street loaned me a puller for the harmonic balancer. The NAPA store didn't have a timing cover but found me an old used one. I was back on the road in a few hours. Some excellent people in that town, at least in 1986. I would expect the same now. Good luck.

Yep,nice young guy from there picked me up in his beater car and dropped me and a pile of gear at the motel. He moved his family here as the California migrants have driven up real estate prices in Heber City so he has to get up at 3 30 am to drive back to his job.Refused to take gas money until I told him I was a retired lawyer.I stood in the heat about 45 minutes in my gear and helmet with my thumb out watching the tourists speed by in their fancy vehicles until this kid stopped.Amazing the nice folks you meet when you need help.

Thanks John but hauling it home.
Very sorry to hear about your misfortune and good luck with everything.
We "slogged" >2000 miles total trailering 2 Guzzi's on a 5 x 9 U-HAUL...and as we crossed the Nevada desert...with no cell service...I kept thinking about a break-down.

Sorry you guys didn’t sell those really nice bikes at the rally JJ,good luck down the road.
-
If you are going back to the bike, stick your fingers up the hole in bottom of bellhousing, that is where the springs come out. There will be parts of the springs or plate you can feel in there.

Thanks, Tkelly! Mike got a serious inquiry on "The Thrasher" from a guy from Seattle, and I posted my Centauro on wildguzzi.com classifieds on my return. No worries...:thumb:  :boozing:

I just looked at what I think is the correct parts book for a 2014 Stelvio. It shows a single plate clutch with a diaphragm spring. There is not a lot to fall apart in there, unless the central bolt backed out somehow. I think.
-
I've changed 5 so far, every one had the 4 springs on plate pushed out of plate, metal on plate that holds springs broke.
You can't get one for 1200, you get a 1400(heavier duty). When this happens it usually messes up the flywheel.
Guzzi does not have the bolts in stock, last year I had to buy 100 from mcMaster-Carr and sent the rest but 7 to Jim Hamlin FREE

My hat is off to you.

Tech Rep told me they switch to Cal14 clutch in 14, I changed a 15 model Stelvio last year. Almost no failures on 8V Norges or Griso's, only Stelvio's.
-
Correct. The 1400 part numbers have superseeded the 1200.

Yeah, "failure to proceed" seems strange to me. Even bike in the picture Steve posted should at least move. (scratching head)

You're swinging me back to my original opinion. But I've never had one apart.
-
Damn dude
I have read all your posts and it seems you have had issues , Day 1 .
Shit I hate to hear about your latest issues.
But it is also strange the “ not moving forward “
Unless the splines took a dump on ya,
But man don’t give up on these bikes, I have had 10 different Guzzi bikes and. Not one has left me stranded in 15+ years.
-
Any history of spline failure on these? My wife’s 650 Sp had that happen. The failure was almost silent but I did hear some funny noise as I rode out of Heber City, but it stopped until about 40 miles later when I lost traction and rolled to a stop with the clutch and gears shifting normally. In any event I would sell it in Fruitland for best offer rather than ship it to WI.I may be ready for an 850 anyway and need to get rid of this, new tires and fresh oil by the way.

There's Erico in Denver CO.
LAs Vegas
sorry about your trip
-
Please keep us posted once repaired. I’m not understanding why a clutch would be working ok and then pretty suddenly change to no-go
-
At this point I’m thinking a driveline failure of some type, clutch shifts ,motor runs but no power to rear wheel, bike rolls while in gear .
-
Did you have any work done on it at the rally?
Any signs of fluid at the CARC refill hole or breather vent?
Any clunking sounds as in the shaft banging around inside the housing...broken Ujoint?
Probably a lot easier to diagnose at home after putting it into a Uhaul truck and driving home...diagnosis hard to do without pulling it apart, would be a shame to spend money on parts not needed only to find something else went south.
At least you had a good rally and ride out! Pity you could not make it to Telluride...very nice riding in that area!

10 in 15+ years? Sounds like you don't give them the opportunity to leave you stranded.

Maybe that makes him smarter that we are!!
-
This is my first time stranded since I got my Eldorado in 1979.
-
Wish I had a spot on the trailer, it would not be too far out of my way on the trip back home from Oregon.
Hope you get it sorted out.
-
If wishes were horses beggars would ride. Thanks for the thought Chris ,I have a haul set up t get it back to WI,see you at the next meeting.
-
"If wishes were horses...." one of my Irish grandmother's favorite sayings!
Sorry to hear about your unfortunate circumstances.

Stop in on the haul home to the IA rally, someone there may buy it as is. Ya never know.
-
You could buy this. Since it’s in Salt Lake City you could trailer it back with yours and have enough spare parts until the apocalypse hits.
