Title: V7III Startus Interuptus?
Post by: circlip on July 05, 2024, 04:55:01 PM
I just tried to start my 2018 V7III. My CTEK charger was at the top of the dots (green) when I unplugged it.
Key in, bike in neutral...I turn the key to see the typical needle swing, lights on, etc.
I push the starter button, hear a light "pop" and everything electrical dies.
Key off, key back on...nothing. I moved the side stand and the bike, still nothing.
So I roll it back into the garage, and I check all of the visible fuses (are there any hidden ones?) and they are all fine.
I plugged in the CTEK back into the bike and I'm at the lowest reading (one yellow light).
A multi meter check of the battery indicates hardly any voltage (.5 v).

It sounds like a pretty drastic short to me, maybe in the starter switch (but maybe not).
I'm not looking forward to spending hours chasing it down, but so be it. Excepts for thr basics, electricity is a bit of a magical mystery to me.
I'm open to any other ideas.

original battery?  it may have an internal short.  pull it and get it checked for free at one of the big 3 autoparts stores.

check the main fuse with continuity meter.

After you pull the battery and check fuse connect another battery and see if it starts.  if using jumper cables make sure other vehicle is off.

Doesn't sound like "Startus Interruptus" which is when the starting circuit has too high a voltage drop to physically trip the starter relay despite the fact that there is sufficient power at the battery.

It's a failure of the starter activation circuit.

Your problem sounds like the battery itself.

If your 2018 has the original battery, then it was due for a change a while ago.  Cycle batteries don't have the life that auto batteries do.

And of course, there are the usual checks; make sure the ground is tight at the battery and on the frame, and make sure the connections are tight at the starter and starter solenoid.

But replacing the battery is the first thing.  Don't even have it checked, it's old enough that it should be replaced.

I recommended the check because of the "Pop" he heard.  I would like to know if the battery got an internal short.

I'm still running batteries from 2018 and 2017 in my bikes.  I keep them on maintainers when not riding.  I will not replace before they are due with the current prices of batteries.

Not startus interruptus.
Not a 'short'. A short passes a HIGH current. You talk like you have lost all current. As in, an OPEN.

It is very possible that a weld inside the battery popped. Or a main power cable is a bit loose. Or of course a fuse popped.

You need to check the voltage at the battery with the key on.

12.7x volts at rest (no key in ignition switch)
12.5x volts with key on
I tested the battery both in and out of the bike with a battery analyzer and both sets of readings are good.
The Guzzi started multiple times this morning without issue.
It appears to be an intermittent problem.
Any other suggestions are appreciated.

And I will check the ground connections.

I think you found your problem. It sounds to me that one of your cables to the battery was not making full contact. As to expensive batteries I had to replace mine in my 2019 V7111 due to the bone head owner leaving heated grips on for a couple of days a couple of times. Being a cheap suspender snapping Guzzi owner I bought the cheapest one online that I could find. Less than $50 to my door. The bike starts better than it ever has, even when brand new. I believe new bikes really don't get proper treatment on dealer's floors especially if they are in stock for a while. My Bonneville had half flat tires when I got it home.

What Moparnut72 said. Look for a loose main connection. Ground OR power.

Is it still intermittent after the removal and reinstall of the battery?

It has started every time I have tried today after I removed the battery (at least six starts).
I obviously reconnected the ground at the battery when I removed and reinstalled it.
I'm going to track down the ground connection to the bike (I admit that I need to find it first) and make sure that the contact is good.

Thanks to everyone for the input and suggestions.

Right on the transmission and always corroded.

The main ground connection is on top of the gearbox
Remove it and file the box until you can see bright metal. Do the same fo each of the battery leads.
Smear bright metal with Vaseline then bolt back together.
Oxide is an insulator, Vaseline excludes the oxygen therefore no oxidation.
