Title: Rear Hub conversion
Post by: Palmaguzzi on August 22, 2024, 06:24:19 AM
I've got a 1979 1000SP1 under project. I'm changing the standard alloys over to spoke rims. I have a hub supplied by a german guzzi shop and its been laced into the rim. However it seem the bearing carrier is different to the standard alloy rim. I'm sure someone here has done this before.
Also I have just received my caliper adaptors to suit 320mm full floating rotors with 4 pot brembo's. These in Titanium and CNC's and truly works of art. Lastly I also had CNC adaptors to suit KTM RC8 rearsets to the same 1000SP1. Again they are beautifully finished. This isnt a straight forward conversion though. The front brakes are though and basically could be done in about 4 hours or less. Let me know if you want to see the pics.

Thanks

T.Roy

Your new rear hub may be from a newer (99ish and up) California ilk bike where to save money Guzzi installed steel rim spoked,  tube required wheels. They needed to offset the tire away from the rear drive so has to create a bunch of new, different parts. They modified the rear drive to have the splines protruding requiring different axle, spacers, brake caliper mount etc. They also about a 1/2 " flange on the wheel hub to cover the gap that was created.
All to avoid more expensive alloy tubeless spoked rims
I know all this because I bought a California Stone rear hub to make up 15" wheels for my 03EV based sidecar rig.

When I put spoke wheels from a 97 California on the 87 LeMans the rear rubbed the drive, and didn't fit as it should. It actually bound up if I recall correctly.

There's a spacer in the final drive that needs to be replaced.  I pressed the one out of the 97 to fit it into the Lemans.

where did you find the brake adaptors for 320mm rotors?

HMB has got them Turin but I personally find the price rather steep.https://hmb-moto.de/Front-wheel-adaptor-set-P08-P4-300
There must be someone in the US who could do you some quite a lot cheaper I'd think. Ed Millich for example ?
