Title: SP1000 Headlight conversion?
Post by: CT Dharma on August 31, 2024, 04:56:08 PM
Anybody put a LED headlight lamp in a SP1000 ['80]? Have seen several discussions with links but none seem to be active anymore. Seems like an odd lamp as it doesn't have the three prongs like a normal H4 lamp. Will I need an adapter ring?

Thanks in advance

On my '83 SP I swapped in a headlight shell from a late '70's Kawasaki KZ 1000.
Had to edit as my memory from 40 years ago wasn't clear.
I fitted a Bosch lens and reflector into the Kawasaki headlight shell. It was the same diameter as a common car headlight. It was made for a H4 halogen bulb.

It sounds like you have a bulb with P45T base instead of the more common P43T. I have some adapters that I bought here:
https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/collections/headlight-led-bulbs/products/p45t-r2-h5-to-p43t-h4-bulb-adapter
and will send you one for free, just PM me your address.

There are LED bulbs with the P45T base, this is one that appears to have the same focal length as a Halogen bulb, which is important for proper beam spread and pattern.

Thanks Charlie, some good information and a generous offer. Let me do some research and get back to you.

I converted my SPII which I think has the same socket base issue as yours.  Read this thread:

I did have to abandon the quick release bail wire and just make up a safety wire substitute.

Charlie - Since I already have a H4 LED lamp I'll take you up on your generous offer for the adapter. I'll PM you my address.

Another reason why this forum is the BEST.

Curious- is a 1980 SP100 headlight the same as a 1981 CX100 headlight?  I wouldn’t mind upgrading my bike while I’m at it…

Not sure if they're the same but this is what mine look like.

Guess not, at least not without some convincing.  my headlight is square.
