Title: Tire Size - I ordered wrong
Post by: bettythebear on October 18, 2024, 10:55:22 AM
2011 v7 Classic

I ordered new tires, and I stead of looking at my own just used Google for the sizes.

The rear is correct, but I ended up with a 110/90 for the front instead of a 100/90. Looks like 110/90 is the size for some later years.

What will this do to the rise? Should I try to return and exchange?

It will make turn in slower as the tire is 10mm wider than what you are used too. Where did you order from. Most places like Revzilla will exchange for free or a small fee. You don;t know until you reach out to them and ask.

Now are you sure that Google was right and the existing tires were wrong? Maybe a PO ordered the wrong tire and put it on??

thats about a 10 mm difference in width as well as height of the tire. Its not a huge difference. On my 73 eldorado, I have run both sizes on the front. The smaller tire does make it feel "lighter" in the front end.

Looks like later v7s has 110/80 listed as an alternative size.

I am far from a sport rider, and have never pushed the v7 to its (lowish) limits so maybe I wouldn't notice too much of it being slower to turn in. Me and my beer gut always ride with full luggage on, so not sure if a wider tire makes a difference in a fully loaded bike.

I ordered from Rocky Mtn ATV so I'm sure they'll do a return, but they don't have the proper size available, and then I'd lose the $60 rebate I got, lol

I’d run it, you may like it. You may not notice much difference. I doubt you would hate it. Hows fender clearances?

Looks pretty good I think. New width is probably equal to the fender width I stead of being a bit smaller. Height wise I can get somewhere between my thumb and two fingers between current tire and fender.

Don’t feel bad.  It could be worse.

I once ordered the wrong size tire.  But did not notice the mistake until I had already removed the wheel from the bike, removed the tire from the rim, and then noticed that the diameter was an inch too big.

The resulting cursing would have embarrassed a sailor.

Been there done that! Ordered a size bigger than called for on the front of my Spiii. A little heavier steering but not too bad. The main difference was that I couldn't wear that tire out. The smaller original size tended to cup badly. That was cured completely with the wider size.  YMMV.

Where I had problems with clearance was usually the diameter. It took awhile figuring out that the tire would grow at higher speeds. It took taking the fender off and noticing the rub marks in the middle. Made a noise but not real loud and not that often.

According to Bridgestone the outside diameter is 18mm bigger on the tire I got, so I'll measure the clearance between current tire and fender tomorrow

Same here. IT was a 17" wheel and I ordered a 18" tire. I though to myself, my that wne on rather easily. Friend of mine ordered up new tires tropped them off and his bike at my place so icould swap them. Got the rear on set the bead then noticed a lot of bubbles around the bead. Broke the bead reset it and still the same. Took a deeper look at the tire and it was "tube type". Problem was it was atubelss wheel. Peeled the tire off put the old one back on and called my budd that was leaving in a few days for a trips (the cause of the tire change) and said Huston, you have a problem. HE orderd more tires (correct one's this time) and a couple days later I got them changed for his trip.

thanks for the replies. I decided that the clearance might be too close, so got a label to return the tire. I ordered the right one from somewhere else. Good thing the $60 rebate was already submitted, lol

It’s the price of knowledge. I have a new tire hanging on the wall that doesn’t fit any thing I own….

Timely post.  Thinking about putting the matching tire on the front that I now have on the rear.  The rear is slightly larger than stock so the front being slightly larger may be a good match.

I put an oversize tire on the rear of my V7III Special
Avon Roadrider MkII 140 80 V17 (68V)
This bought the speedo into line, it over-read by several km/h with the factory size.
The Avon only just fitted, so close to the rear drive tunnel 1-1.5mm clearance.
I have the same Avon Roadrider on the front 100 90 18  56V
Both tires are tubeless of course.
