Title: California with DMC car
Post by: Yukonica on January 23, 2025, 08:43:11 PM
For the best part of a decade I have waffled on the idea of buying a rig. Recently I noticed an advert in BC for a 2007 California and DMC hack listed. 13k asking and 10k km on the odometer.
Now, I'm 3000km north of the city so popping over for a quick look isn't practical. Collectively snapping our suspenders... any thoughts or advice on the opportunity?
Originally I was/am looking for a Ural because Yukon has way more mining trails than paved highways but an honest assessment is I'll likely use the machine for trips to town or highway rides to Dawson etc.

A Ural can indeed do highway…it just depends how much highway and how fast you need to go. I rode 200 miles one way to Acadia National Park on one trip, 1/2 of which was highway going 70 mph, and 450 miles on another trip, maybe 1/4-1/3 of which was 70 mph on the highway. I wouldn’t do too much more than that though. Gotta call out the advantages of reverse (all models) and 2WD on the Gear Up model. I personally miss both features right now in my 3rd winter riding my rigs in New England (I had a Ural for 6 months).

Wow, that's left field. Yukon roads would eat a Delorean and smelt the stainless by lunch time

For sure, I am inclined to Ural because of its versatility. The difficult part is learning which model year has the fewest mechanical quirks. I haven't found a Ural forum like we have here for information.
There's a 2022 Gear Up on the market for 17 grand with 62k on the clock. Another is a 2010 Patrol for 13k with 25k on the clock. Either way the California seems to be the far better deal. ... As long as I stick to gravel secondaries and chip-seal roads.

I have  owned  a 2012 Ural Gear Up, for about 3 years, and also own a 98 EV with a DMC M72 sidecar, for a couple of years. They are both excellent rigs for different purposes. The DMC is almost a copy of a Ural , but in very high quality fiberglass. Both my rigs have a brake on the sidecar wheel. Both rigs are very comfortable for a passenger, getting in and out is very easy on both. ( Happy wife )   The ural is perfect for around town and gravel roads, with a front disc brake, and drums on the tub,and bike rear, the Guzzi rig has much better brakes all around with the big Brembos.  Top comfortable speed on the Ural, is about 60mph. 65 is pushing it .  Its a ton of fun at 45-55 mph!   The EV rig, will cruise the highway at 75 all day long, and can still accelerate to 85 + if needed.

I was lucky ,to be able to get the DMC before Jay Geise sold his business. I am happy Texas sidecars bought them out,  and continues building those. The owner Kent Silk is a very nice guy to deal with, but the wait time for a DMC is at least 6 months out, I have heard.
Rick.

Soviet Steeds is indeed that place. Lots of knowledgeable folks there.

If I purchased another Ural down the road, I would go for one made after 2014, the year they went disc brakes on all sides, and fuel injected. The early fuel injection units were individual to their cylinder, and so you’d have to sync them. Later EFI units went truly singular, but, if I remember correctly, I THINK you can replace those early units with a singular type. A few years around that time suffered from poorly cast rocker arms (Oh, memories)
