Title: V100 3rd ,4th gear lash
Post by: noamlu on March 12, 2025, 11:00:05 AM
Bike lately started to respond abruptly when going on and off the throttle,at 3rd and 4th gear. Did a basic lash check. When 3rd or 4th are engaged I can easily move the bike 12-15 cm. Lower gears don't display such excessive lash. Does anyone think that such a lash is within tolerance? Especially given the influence on riding expperience.

One of the drawbacks of shaft driven motorcycles is often excessive drive-line lash.  I wouldn't think the amount you stated is abnormal unless it just showed up and was not there before. It's been my experience. that, combined with driveline lash and overly lean emissions and on-off throttle is often very touchy.

Thanks for your answer. I can live with the abrupt response since I don't ride much in town. But don't you think its a possible premature ware issue which will get progressively worse and lead to more serious gearbox issues?

Take a test ride on one and see if it is any different.

Hi Folks
Here is the gear transmission lash on a 2023 of a buddy and my 2024 v100 measured at the outside of the rim.
1st.  8/32”
2nd. 12/32
3rd.  2 21/32 holy cow!!!
4th.  2 12/32  !!!!
5th.   1 8/32
6th.   1 15/32”
These were measured at 4800, 5600 and 8100 miles.  They all stayed about the same with some measuring error.
3rd and 4th are the most ppl and noticeable. 3rd gear seems to be the gear i end up in when pushing the twisties and on off the gas the lash is VERY noticeable
This has to be mostly in the transmission? Otherwise it would be the same across all gears???
I see in the 2024 Stelvio and 2025 V100 they talk about a transmission/clutch upgrade.
Anyone with a 2025 yet to measure??
Any input/confirmation would be appreciated.
Thx. Paul

Here is the gear transmission lash ..
Crikey, that a comprehensive test & measurement!

[ I visualise dimensions in inches (not fractions thereof) and mm/microns - a consequence of decimalisation, many moons ago. I prefer mm for quick accuracy (and lack of brain hurt.) ]

Here in one of the colonies the metric system gives me brain hurt. Oh well it is what it is. I find on my Mandello riding on twisty mountain roads with frequent gear changes sport mode helps to reduce the jerkyness somewhat due to quicker response, I think.

I almost always ride in tour mode.  Around here the roads are pretty rough and that smooths them out a bit.
But i will adjust the engine control in that mode to full throttle.
Thanks for the input.
