For many years I have only changed the filter every other oil change on all my big block Guzzis. I'm now on a 2020 V7 Racer. Should I continue this practice or should I change the filter every oil change?

According to the manual, replace the filter with each oil change. They know more than I do.

Weren't those big block intervals half as long as the modern smallblock intervals?
I mean, it's one thing if you're not making the mileage each year, but it's another if you are.
Besides they're cheap enough.

My V7 small block manual says both oil and filter every 6K miles. And as is said, the cost is reasonable.

It's been a decade plus, but IIRC the old big block manuals were like every 3k and change the filter every other time.

I change the oil i.a.w. the recommended time interval (potential chemical deterioration) and the filter after the recommended mileage because the filtering ability is related to the volume of throughflow which in turn is related to mileage. On the other hand, this reasoning maybe total nonsense.

Finally getting around to that oil change, Steve? I Have just changed the filter each time. AF1 and Cadre had, or still have service kits that include the oil(s) and bits you need, like the filter & crush washer, and air filter/plugs. Can be a bit messier than a spin on, but easier than dropping the pan on a big block. BB shop manual sez change oil & filter every 10,000km.
PM me if you wanna do a local ride this week or w/e, I am building back up after my medical stuff the last 6 months. Monday the T140 goes in for motor work, but around on tu-we AM or Sat early

I do this on all my vehicles, autos and MC, but due to the small oil capacity of the small block drain and fill at 3k, and the oil and filter at 6k. Overkill perhaps, but I flog the V7, have commuted on it in city traffic, so it's cheap insurance IMO.

I agree with Bulldog 9. I change the V7's at 3-4000 miles but the filter, every other time. It only holds a quart and a half and takes ten minutes. I've been letting the V85's go 4-5000 just because I ride them a bit more gently, and they are or have been under warranty so the filter gets changed to prevent arguments.

On all my vehicles I do the first change at 1,000 miles. Then the next at 5,000 miles and every 5,000 miles afterward. Easy to keep track of when oil needs to be changed, every multiple of 5,000. New filter every time, may not be needed but allows inspection depending on filter type.

its not as messy if you leave the filler cap & dipstick in place while you remove the drain plug, this tends to slow down the oil flow, then when it starts to run out remove the fill cap.
