Title: Eskimo Spy pops the clutch on Summer
Post by: travelingbyguzzi on May 01, 2025, 08:49:38 AM
2 weeks ago, I loaded up The Mighty Norge and left my winter home in Arkansas for Seattle. It was a cold, wet, windy trip.
I had 3 reasons to cross the country in mid-April.
The Oregon Guzzi Crew was throwing a big spring opener party in Central Oregon.
I had some tax issues to straighten out.
To collect my romantic interest and her CanAm for a 5 week trip to Arkansas and back to Seattle.
We are dragging out this morning for Little Rock and Bonnie Raitt.
Main stops along the way: Little Big Horn, The Black Hills, The Flint Hills, and Eureka Springs Arkansas.
Summer is here, Y'all. Let's get out there!

I-90 all the way today, but Idahi abd Western Montana are sublime this time of year. 70* and abundant sunshine.
We are in Superior, Montana
Pictured is Spauge Lake in Eastern WA and Wallace Idaho which is a silver mining town with lots of cool buildings

What has been your experience with crosswinds? My 8V Norge is a pain in crosswinds, some extent with handling but the worst part is the helmet being dope slapped by the windward side.

This is definitely windscreen related.  A shorter windscreen like a Cal-Sci shorty makes these types of situations much better.  The Stock windscreen sucks and creates incredible turbulence in side winds...I remember one long trip coming back from Kansas and another thru Texas that I thought my head would come off from the turbulence.  Going small made that situation much nicer...you hear a bit of air, but it's smooth air.

I have a short screen on mine. I am never sure whether to go slower so I have more reaction time or faster to push the wind around instead of it pushing me around.
The worst wind was on I-90 in Wyoming, so I went faster.
On the 1200 Sport, Cookie and I oncegot pushed into the oncoming lane on U.S. 20 in Western Nebraska. I slowed down quite a bit that afternoon.

Side winds are really nasty.Chuck and I rode north from Hannibal MO to WI and it was so bad we tried to ride east as much as possible even tho we had to ride thru Clinton IA traffic to get relief. On my Stelvio I try to tuck on the tank and try to anticipate when the gusts will hit,not fun.

We are in Hot Springs SD for the evening. Had a great day weather wise.
Be advised that US395 is closed North of Custer for all of the Summer of '25.
Yesterday we stopped at my favorite Montana tavern in Big Timber for a terrific lamb burger.

There were many buffalo to be seen in Custer State Park. Some wanted to cross the road, but waited impatiently until we had ridden by.
Tomorrow, we traverse a large part of Nebraska on Nebraska hwy2.

Day 4 of 31
Ate a LOT of wind in Western Nebraska today.
Had a great stop at Museum of the Fur Trade near Chadron Nebraska

Everybody needs a 2 pound swivelgun.
Next we stopped at Carhenge just North of Alliance NE. It is much improved and expanded since I was there 15 years ago.

After that, we just ate wind for 270 miles to Grand Island NE.
Tomorrow, Kansas. I can hardly wait.

I used to live in Colo where I did outside trim on residential housing. We had to deal with wind a lot. One of the guys said the wind doesn't blow in Colo, Kansas sucks. I apologize to any Kansans here but I didn't say it, just repeating what he said. I rode across Kansas a couple of times it seemed to take a week. Chicken strips, what chicken strips? I ran Dunlop K70's in those days, they started off square. :azn:

Were you able to fabricate a mount for that swivel gun?

Tomorrow, we traverse a large part of Nebraska on Nebraska hwy2.

We nearly always run Nebraska 2 when we're out that way - heading to South Dakota.  Pop out in Valentine. Get a meal at the Bunkhouse Restaurant.

Day 6 finds us in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. We just beat the rain, but we may be riding to Little Rock in the rain.
The big story is the Kathy ate something bad yesterday and was sick all last night. She rode the 300 miles today like a trooper and still feels so poorly that she is having plain rice for supper.
We are staying at the historic and luxurious Basin Park hotel.

I know you have a schedule, Bill but wish you had taken a southern route.  If you ever find yourselves in Southern NM, give me a shout by PM!

Lotsa great riding down here... :thumb:
