Hard to believe that some of my 1100 Sport's are turning into "Antique" classified motorcycles already.....
Just received the new plates for my 1995 last week. Hard to believe that this bike is already thirty years old. This 1100 Sport is now exempt from the yearly DMV safety inspections, which is nice, but really doesn't matter since everything works as it should on that bike. I haven't ridden any of my seven motorcycles during the last three years, due to my busy work schedule and a couple of injuries, so I'm looking forward to the second week in July, when I'm taking the silver 95 for a one week riding vacation to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee Mountains, and Maggie Valley / Tail of the Dragon around Boone and Asheville, NC.

This 1996 will get the "Antique" designation in seven month.

And this 1997 turns "Antique" in two years.

The only reason I don't have those on my bikes is that in GA it says HOBBYIST on them. I can afford $25 for plates.

Do the car and truck plates have HOBBYIST on them as well?

Antique is hilarious! 100+years is what I think of.
Classic/Historic-->Vintage-->Antique
In the UK, 40 years old and the vehicle is classed as Historic, providing exemption from MOT and Road Tax.

Don't know, Jeep is only 25yr old. Haven't looked into it. It's only 25 bucks also for tags.

Indeed, my LM2 is 'Historic' so no MOT (annual safety inspection) required and free tax (about £100 pa saving), also 'Historic' status means ULEZ (Ultra Low Emissions Zone - in London) exempt.
I also have a 62 year old Land Rover that is 'Historic' and the part I find hilarious is that when checking it's status for ULEZ compliance online the reply is "This vehicle meets ULEZ emissions standards, You do not need to pay a daily ULEZ charge to drive in the zone and are
helping to improve air quality across London".Improving air quality! in an old V8 engined, 12mpg 4x4 with no catalytic converter...

Here in PA they are eligible for antique plates when they're 25 years old. All of the Guzzis in our stable are antique except for one including my 73 Eldorado (soon to be gifted to my son), my 76 Convert, my 84 Cali II sidecar rig , my wife's 84 V65SP, and my son's 87 LeMans SE. My 01 EV will get antique tags in 2026. Then the anual inspection harassment will no longer exist.

Floriduh has a vintage/junk license plate that is ugly and I believe it cost $5 dollars less than a regular tag. For the $5 bucks and an ugly tag it's not worth the savings IMO but that is just me and now they have upped the old age to 30 years, probably because 20 year old rolling junk was losing the state lots of money.

..about £100 pa saving..emissions standards..
My not so elderly, relatively efficient Breva (with bureaucrat friendly catalysers and all the rest of the crap) will be £121 per annum, in a couple of weeks! Grrr.
Back to the subject of plates: there's a fad in the UK for people to put vintage silver on black plates (to look cool?) when they are illegal unless is older than a certain date. They look great on a Matchless for example, but IMHO stupid on 'modern' machines.

Not sure about plates with an Antique designation in New York but up until the late ‘50s license plates had the year stamped into them. You got a new plate every year. The last decade or so they just sent a metal corner with that years date stamped into it. If you have a pre ‘60s bike and can find a plate with the same year as your bike you can use that. I have a ‘52 plate for a BSA A10.
That said any vehicle over 25 years old can get collectors insurance. Limited to 2,500 miles a year its a fraction of the cost of regular insurance.

Yes, I'd forgotten how much the road tax actually was but I just checked and I paid £117 each for the Ducatis, back in March so pre-annual increase.
My Son's just received the renewal for his car - £35 and some are free so not sure how they justify £121 for a bike...

I try not to think about the Antique plate I now have on a vehicle that I bought new and what that says about me.
-
Here in Washington State, vehicles 30+ years old are eligible for "Collector" plates that say "Collector Vehicle" on them. Once you pay for them, you never have to pay annual registration fees again. The caveat is that you aren't supposed to ride/drive the vehicle as regular transportation. One of the conditions, however, states you are allowed to operate a collector vehicle "for the pleasure of others." So if I get pulled over, I'll tell the officer I'm just showing off the bike "for the pleasure of others!"
-
My Centauro would have those if it didn't require an in person trip to the DMV
-
Don't know about other states, but when I looked into antique plates here in TN, they were so restrictive in how and when you could operate the vehicle (Parades, holidays, etc.) they were basically worthless.
