Title: Gilardoni Jugs
Post by: pl259 on May 24, 2025, 06:56:59 PM
I have a new to me 850 T3. The left cylinder has the Gilardoni name cast in where everyone says it should be. I can't find any comparable markings on the right one. Is that normal, where only the left has the name? I can't see a previous owner only changing one side, but then again...

Thx, pl259

Aren't the cylinders the same?
Therefore the trademark would be opposite position on opposite cylinder?

I just looked at my T3 in the garage. Both cylinders have the Gilardoni mark on the outside, between the bottom two fins. The left cylinder's mark is visible from the left side of the bike, and the right cylinder's mark from the right side of the bike.

A previous owner decided to save money, I would guess.

I've bought cylinder kits that came in Gilardoni boxes, but no cast in name. I believe that towards the end, they may have outsourced the casting of the cylinders.

If you have any doubts about whether the "no name" cylinder is "Nikasil", it's easy enough to check. Remove a spark plug, make sure the piston is down away from TDC, insert a "pencil magnet" (the stronger the better) and touch the cylinder wall. There should be a very slight magnetic attraction if it's "Nikasil".

Thanks for the replies. I'll try the magnet test. Also the patina on the two cylinders are about the same. Knowing that Gilardoni outsourced some of the castings helps with piecing together the history.
