Title: Used Hydro checklist?
Post by: Mwether on July 01, 2025, 08:29:40 AM
Ok, don't want to screw this up!

I think the "Big Three Dangers" list goes: valve insanity, clutch, and lower yoke/triple tree. Am I forgetting something? 5th gear whine, maybe??

Looking at an '04. Here's the "rocker cover off" shot. Looks post-fix, correct? (Only slightly concerning that Vise-Grips were used in this operation!)

The owner says that the dealer installed a new clutch. I don't have a picture through the timing inspection hole. I should ask for one...

I sent him this link and he's checking the triple tree.

10,400 miles (That's ~500 miles per year! I wish it were more). Asking $3500. GPS speedo. And that's an aftermarket seat and pillion rest, right?

Don't think the Rover's for sale!

Looks like the right valves.  :thumb:
Odometer replaced.  :thumb:
Aftermarket seat and backrest. Probably a good thing.  :thumb:

Get a photo of the flywheel gear area.
You may need to replace the fuel pump fuse hose. And the filter at the same time at that age.

Edit: Typo, obviously mean hose. The factory hose can pop off.

Is the flywheel gear area you mention different from a shot into the timing inspection hole?

You will be checking for the presence of a 2 plate clutch (good) vs. a single plate (bad) which will fail.

Single plate looks like this.

2 plate looks like this.

Thanks much, Dave!

I think you've helped me conclude that "a photo of the flywheel gear area" and "a photo into the timing inspection hole" are the same? Just two different ways to confirm the presence of a two-plate clutch, correct?

Yes, "timing inspection hole" is the common nomenclature

That appears to be the Corbin seat for the EV.  They were/still are big bucks new.

And because I'm a clueless noob, this hole is on the right side of the engine? So the rear wheel is to the left (ring gear side) in Dave's and your photos??

Right side of bellhousing, rubber plug, easy to see.

This is the 2nd EV recently on here with a replacement speedo-----

Being an 04 I'd be amazed if it was single plate clutch.

Re the fuel hose, replace the silly crimp clamp on the fuel hose. That's the issue mine  had. Hose was fine and the right type.
Crimp hose clamp loses tension and pops off

I had an 04 just like that one and let it go, mistake!
Best motor I’ve ever had in a MC. For the life on me I can understand what MG was thinking when they discontinued that motor.

Ok, this photo looks great. Exactly what we want to see.  :thumb:

But the yoke/triple tree photo is partially concerning.

According to this doc
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2007/RCRIT-07V254-3234.pdf
the recall only affected yokes with a digit "2" and this has a "1."

OTOH, what is that in the yellow circle??

You never want to see cracks in a cast alloy part.  This will only get worse over time.  It does look like it was caused from bashing the travel stops.  Ask for a discount and find a good lower tree.  Not a trifling job to switch out though depending on how well equipped your shop is.

Thanks, Dave. Would you ride it ~700 miles home like that? If not, the search continues...

And my shop is pretty trifling, so I might have to walk away anyway!

Fingers crossed that the triple tree problem is just more "scary fiber"!

When he sent me an initial pic of the rockers, etc. there was something concerning...

Turns out it was a stray string of some sort. And once removed...voila, nuthin' to see!

The "crack" on the yoke could be the same type of thing?? I probably shouldn't hold my breath...

Somewhere on the net is a pic or two of the crack in the defective yokes. IIRR what looks like a crack, may not be the one that the recall was for????

I suspect that is a crack in the silver paint, not the yoke. BUT.........

I think the original problem crack was where the stem was pressed into the aluminum.

Wayne I seem to recall that as well.

When I worked in the radial aircraft engine shop I struggled with this issue quite a bit. One of my tasks was to use Zyglo a fluorescent liquid under UV light to highlight cracks in aluminum and magnesium castings. One brand of engine we overhauled was a smaller more budget friendly choice. They were built to a price point so the castings weren't the cleanest so I spend a fair amount of time trying to determine is a highlighted line was a casting imperfection or a crack. Occasionally  it was so hard to tell that I would get the boss to take a look so that it wouldn't come down on me if it was a crack after all.

Seller sent a new photo.

It was just dirt! Hallelujah! (Some rust to address but no dealbreakers!)

Looks a bit oily there at the steering head. Breather hoses may be cracked and needing replacement. Fuel hoses don't last forever either.
