I think I could have got another 237 miles out of these brake pads. I mean, I wasn't down to the bonding layer yet.

237? I’m guessing at least 800. Throw ‘em back on and let’s open up a wagering pool!
-
Single disc front with 25,xxx miles. The other pad had about 1/8" left.
-
Easy 3,000 more miles.
Just learn to use your horn.

I have more than 80k miles on my car and still plenty of material on the original pads. Usually do not keep bikes long enough to require change of brake pads, but I would assume at least 60 on the front pads and about the life of the bike for the rear. After all, brakes just slows you down
-
I just turned 100K on my truck on the original pads. It has an engine brake so the wheel brakes see pretty light duty.

Just use the back brake and the gear box. Should be good for another 25,000….
-
Just drag your feet like Fred Flintstone! Then those pads will never wear out!
-
Yeah, there's at least one long roadtrip left in those pads.

LOL! as Keith Code would say 'your engine is not a brake'
I wore out a Cal3 spline shaft at 44K doing just that LOL!

If you were truly a member of the red suspender brigade you'd be looking for used set of brake pads to replace those
-
Don’t listen to them Kev, it’s a trap!!!!😂

If he really cared about his fellow tight wad Guzzi peers, he would be offering to sell those pads on this site.
A cut up wood painters stick and some gorilla glue will have those backing plates working as good as the OEM pads.
-
How much do you want for those?
:boozing:
-
Just reverse them for another 25K.
-
Youse guys are crazy— just disconnect them and stay on the freeway…

If you buy them, don't forget to sand the glaze off them before installing.

Pffff, you know how much sandpaper costs these days? Just rub them on the neighbor's concrete stoop to deglaze

It's not like I don't have more experience in this area.... 2002 Jackal rear, I think.

He only needs one pad, the other one still has 3mm left on it!

Many moons ago, Performance Bikes had an article about a dispatch rider who used his Suzuki RGV250 for work. When the rear brake pads wore out, he made new ones in wood. When they caught fire, he just kept using the brake pistons for friction, until they (well, I guess just one) fell out, After that, he learned to stop without a rear brake.

Why would splines wear out faster from engine braking than acceleration?

Acceleration wears on one side of the splines, deceleration wears on the opposite side.
If you don't use the engine braking, the splines primarily only wear on one side.

I'm the same with tires. I only ride on the outside thread so I don't wear the inside out too fast

When you put those pads back in, don’t forget to bleed the brakes. I can send you some of my “recycled” brake fluid. And don’t worry, it’s already been pre-boiled.
-
Those are God sends compared to the cable pull drum brakes that Loops have. You haven't lived till you've survived a panic stop with Loop drum brakes.

Are you kidding, throw away good brake fluid and/or pay for more? All the OP has to do is empty the brake fluid into his camp coffee pot (reserve the old grounds for the next camping trip) and when burning his trash along the curb (saves from paying curb side pickup) just heat the brake fluid until the temp reaches around 220 degrees to boil off any water. Then strain through an old pair of underwear that is not good enough to be upcycled into a wash cloth and its ready to be put back into brake system. If you want to reverse bleed the brakes it is suggested you root through the sharps box at the local clinic to find a suitable syringe.

The brakes on my old R50/2 were just plain awful. No bike could be worse than those.

Obviously a statement made by someone who has never driven a pre 2003 Ural.
My R60/2 with round drums and 232AF brake compound did have anti-lock brakes, but stopped uneventfully.
Ural with sloppy linkage, bad mechanical advantage and steel, out of round drums being grabbed by something with the consistency of slate just sort of slowed down. The brake was good for turning on the tail light so following traffic knew you wanted to stop.
-
Nope, never driven a Ural and really have no desire to do so. I wouldn't mind having another /2 for leisurely Sunday afternoon rides.
