Title: 85 TT gear box noise
Post by: Cassie on October 26, 2025, 11:35:27 AM
I have a 2021 MG 85TT with 18k miles.  I put the bike on the center stand and ran it in 2nd gear. Unusual clunking and kind of grinding sounds like the U-joints were bad. Changed all the oils in the bike and still the noise. Disassembled drive shaft and found the splines a little rusty, but splines looked good. U-joint bearings were fine. Reassembled it and clunk still exists. On the road the clunking seems to subside, but wondering if others experience the bike being louder on the center stand?  Just hoping I don't have transmission problems and would like feedback from others please?  Also installed new Metzler tires with a 70/30 aggressive tread and do hear a bit of whining on the road, but figure that is the tires. I have had the bike about a year and bought it used, the noise was not noticeable when I purchased it.

All Guzzi's make terrible racket on centerstand in gear & running throttle. Does it make noise going down the road? Centerstand noise doesn't count in my book unless you are a chain drive guy then disregard the noise cause it don't count. Going down the road or on dyno under load. The rest is BS noise.

Well stated guzzisteve .The other questions to ask is was there any metal particles on the drain plug magnet or in the drained oil .
Also does  the sound vary clutch in and out . Keeping drive shaft splines greased a good idea too the factory are mean with it.

If you spin the rear tire by hand on my V7III on the CS you can hear the U joint or something hitting a bit. I haven't tried it on the V85 but I bet it's the same thing. Too much shaft angle while the rear is so low.

You wouldn't believe how many do this and don't realize  it's just all the slack you have to have to make things work correctly. I also had a salesman come up and say the new Norge has a clutch problem not knowing it's a dry clutch & rattles the 2 plates when you pull clutch in.

I had a V85tt 2022 and a V7-850, never really paid any attention how they sound on the center stand, but to me they have clunk in the lower gears as you shift and progressively get less clunky, almost silent into 5th and 6th.   But when cruising they have a nice whine sound as if the gear are from a tractor, in a good way.
