Well laid plans of mine..
I don't want to give the game away on what I'm up to, just yet. :popcorn:
I've started stripping down the main wiring harness, with a view to replacing it. What a fiasco! I'm on the final stages, having un-clipped numerous connectors, detached the coils, fuse box and other sundry 'bits'. I need to remove the horn to access its connectors and one other that's deep within the headstock. Now that the loom is fairly loose, it's much more obvious on how difficult/tricky/impossible it will be to extract it from the frame, without crazy amounts of teardown eg. throttle body and those specialised clips holding it and the inlet manifold. The location of the ABS controller and plumbing doesn't help either.
I'm really regretting going down this road and any (constructive) insights will be gratefully received.

With my semi basket case T3 I am looking at the same problem that I am not looking forward to. Very far from one of strong points. The original was all hacked to death, the back up parts bike is even worse what if left of it. I am going to rewire the whole thing and considering a lot of aftermarket that I am going to use probably the best way. Good luck.

At least you won't have all the additional connections for 'modern' stuff. The main problem is that the harness on these later bikes are contained within a plastic structure, that has various protrusions, for attaching 'things' to.

That is ugly. I have two harnesses but both are pretty bad. I may use part of the best one just for the wiring. A website that may be a help is cycleterminal.com/motorcycle-connectors.html. The have all kinds of connectors and other parts. Greg Bender is another source but I am sure you already knew that. I am quite a way away from wiring. Right now I go two steps forward and one back. The latest is I am switching wheels to get the two rims to match. The hubs are a different width so the discs are different distances apart What is the best way to adjust? I was shuffling through Guzziology and it opened right to the page with the correct fix. Good luck with your project.

Although you linked to 'murican sites, you've inspired me and I may keep the existing loom, with a purchase of a required connector. I may be able to return or just resell the loom that I bought - they ain't cheap.
Unless someone can tell me the easy way to ease the loom out of the frame, without crabbing etc.!

You of all people should be thankful for the work that lies ahead—after all, at least you don’t have to worry about the older small block airbox being in the way!
PS—since when did you get a V7 III…I thought your small blocks were older.

Oh, I've already had the joys of the V50II airbox, thanks - the PO had managed to bend the capillary pipe (cannae mind what it's called offhand). I took the whole thing out by removing the battery etc., so as to check and clean it all. That was easy compared to my latest "adventure".
My Breva has gone to pastures new. I know that I'll regret it as it ran so strongly and being a 2008 has the revised gearing plus the lowered seat. I needed the garage space to work on the Shiny..
Had the Carbon Shine (there's a thread on my additions) for just over a year but restrict its use to Summer-ish 6 months - hence only 400miles (amongst other reasons). Hopefully I'll get on better this year - and not bash my shin on the left footpeg so often, if not completely!
I reckon I can chop up a BMW F650GS or Triumph Sprint 955i RS harness that I have somewhere in the garage, to get some suitable wire.
Mulling over: £24 for UK supplied or £10 for China supplied connector, hoping that it's the right size.. hmm. I'll sleep on it.
Yesterday (my timezone) I discovered the ABS unit is made in China. :blank:

Well, I'm moving to Plan C.
Spent the past few days re-plugging the existing loom, having given up the idea of being able to swap it out, without major 'surgery'! I know, I chickened out. :rolleyes:
I've sourced a required connector from AliXpress, saving a heap of cash but needing patience for it to arrive. I may elaborate on just how much, when the project is complete - watch this space.
Trying to get some positives from this experience, I discovered the missing diagnostics port cover lying under the rubbery battery holder. Oh well, it's something. I've put a stainless serrated washer on each of the main earth and the high power starter motor terminal - I was a bit surprised that there was no spring washer or Nyloc nut.
