Title: Magic Carpet Ride
Post by: Bulldog9 on March 08, 2026, 04:17:36 PM
Had an extra couple of hours between projects on Saturday, and took the Convert out for a nice 75 mile ride. Such a different but also amazing ride. The feet forward and higher than I am used to knee position, excellent linked brakes and lack of backpressure take some getting used to before riding aggressively in turns, but it is such a unique and rewarding motorcycle to ride. It says 'slow down' and enjoy. I also find that refreshing.

My 75 mile ride included 60 on back twisty roads, and about 15 miles of interstate. I tend to keep the transmission in low as I rarely get above 60 miles an hour. Acceleration is snappier in low, and you get a bit of backpressure for slowing in turns. On the highway (beautiful Virginian  I 64), the bike was rock solid at an indicated 80mph. Yes I snicked it into high for the highway section.....

The Tonti Chassis is rock solid, and if I didn't have the giant DB bags and the skinny tires, I can tell that the bike could do much more than I ask of it. The sound out of the Bassa Exhaust is  glorious, and I just love the way it sounds at speed and at idle. It just purrs. I DON'T need another motorcycle right now, but eventually when I get the second garage built next year, I can see finding and restoring a Similar 1970's Tonti Frame with a standard transmission.

I passed on a Convert a few years, mainly caused I had no idea on why one would want such a bike.  Now after owning a V85TT ( put 18,000 miles on it), didnt entirely bond with it, mean while I recused a V7, sold it.   Then went thru MG withdrawals and bought a V7-850 Stone "TEN", this bike is the whip!

What level of enlightenment have I achieved?

I had three Converts over the years. I would most certainly like to have another one.

Dave, love your Convert, such a great restoration. Mine is somewhat of a 'restomod' but I like it. Can't believe I've had it 6 years now.

Pervert… :thumb:

I’ve sung the praises of verts since 1995. Bought one leaking from every seal for $900, and Dr Dave and his Guzziology rescued me for 90k miles. Bought another and drove it for 55k.

I never found them slow, just gas it in low.

Im constantly amazed how they keep showing up

This is my Convert...or should I say, Ambo-vert. I like the look, handling and geometry of Loopframes over a tonti, so decided to shove the entire drive train and front end from a convert into a Ambo frame. Love this beast. Great for commuting and traffic too.

I blame you and Roper for planting the Convert seed back then.

Certainly has become a world wide movement …it’s got to be the stainless steel fenders luring the innocent

“…it LIVES! Hahahahahaha….” Channeling Dr Frankenstein while tuning a Convert…

Kept an eye out for a Convert for several years; then stumbled on to a cherry CM450A. Was to nice to put a lot of miles on. In the dozen years I had it I put 1600 miles on it. Still fun tho!!!!!!!

You are talking about the Honda automatic correct?

That would be a very rare beast.

Yes, 1983 CM450A Honda. Had 166 miles on it when I got it in 2005 (ims, so 16ish, not 12; time flys???). Had 1800+ in 2021 when donated to local charity/ food bank. Fellow who runs it is a friend. Was my last 2 wheeler as my vision not good enough. Still stick around here tho; just for grins.
