Title: Weird frame/engine numbers on my ‘73 eldo
Post by: amamet on March 20, 2026, 08:07:18 AM
so on the vin plate of my 73 eldo, i have:
Frame  058979
Engine 058979

But my engines actual number is 057979. Cant imagine it’s a replacement engine being off by one number, probably just a factory mistake right?  Im “getting” a replacement vin tag, do i leave it with same frame and engine number or do i have it reflect the actual engine number or leave engine blank as i may be building a hot rodded engine with a nos unstamped engine case. The vin plate was damaged during removal for frame painting
Thx
Allen

It's not inconceivable that a replacement engine would be off one digit like that - a bit weird but not inconceivable. I always stamp the replacement VIN plate with the original information no matter what the actual engine number is.

If one has (or makes) the tool, the VIN won't be damaged during removal...

Thx Charlie, ive removed a few easily enough but i think i may have been too “caffeinated” at the time with this one.
