Title: CalVin odo. Running...backwards?
Post by: aklawok on June 04, 2026, 01:18:37 PM
2007 California Vintage that I have had now 5 years. Has given me very little trouble, a little over 25k mi. Recently after fill up reset trip meter, which I think is the start of problem as the knob has gotten bumped. Noticed it was not recording and fiddled with it a few times but the speedo was still fine.
Yesterday during a ride 35 mi. Stoped at a roadhouse for a bit, when started out....no speedo. AND the odo was counting down!!!! Slowly at a rate of about 1::4 miles. Have never seen this. I know replacing the clock would be costly, does anyone know if these units can be rebuilt?

I'd start with eh simple stuff 1st and disconnect the battery for 10 or 20 minutes then reconnect and see if the system resets itself.

They can be repaired because I have seen post about it before but it's going to be costly either way.

Mechanical, not electric. $283 from Harper's and out of stock.

There is a place here in GA I believe. If you do a search you may find it.

The CalVin has mechanical ITI speedo.

They're famous for going bad / eating gears internally.

Well, I now have a quote for repair from joel: $350! Not what I want to spend right now. There should be some other alternatives. I see guzzi used this ITI speedo from 2002 to at least 2012. At least if I keep riding it long enough the mileage will turn itself back! :clock: I wonder, does that mean my machine could be "new" again?

Have you thought about installing a speedhut GPS speedometer?
Rick.

Yes, I just looked those up yesterday and some old WG posts about having installed them. Still $350. I also sent for quotes for rebuild one other place on Seattle. Looked at palo alto website, no price given but seems to be in the $500-700 range. Found one unit on fleabay but is a white face, don't think I could stand looking at the contrast. It's from a 1999 and appears to not have the odo reset and still $250.

When the one on my Calvin went bad I just bought a good quality bicycle GPS odometer and mounted it to the handle bars.
Works great at a very reasonable cost and can be used to keep
up with the miles on the bike for oil changes, total miles, as  well as speed. It also has other features like a resettable trip meter with time spent on the road.
Also comes in good when selling the bike, to offer proof of mileage, even with a broken factory junk odometer.

If you be the clever and patient sort you can remove the speedo from the can, pull the needle and swap the faceplate with your present instrument. Then as long as you are in there you can disassemble the odometer stack a bit and set it to the reading you wish. The really hardest part is re-sealing the trim ring and that's not impossible with a tiny hammer, punch and patience. It's all just clockwork.

Since no one will tell you the truth..... I will.  Aklawok, you have entered the twilight zone.  Your life from hence forth will wind backwards until you reach infancy.  Then............... ................... ....  I would ride it until you reach your favorite prior age and then park it and enjoy the past.

Actually, I was hoping someone would come up with a doctor Who theory.
