Needs MFP otherwise nice somewhere in Japan you can get a replica right down to the graphics. Remember an interview with Steve Bisley (the actor that played Goose) couple of years ago 20th aniversary of MMII or similar he was saying how back in the day he could ride a bit. For example he did all Gooses riding as well as one of the bike gangs members he did say they hurt quiet a few people making the movie though. Can't say I'm really into clebs or actors but that got my attention, he is the real deal.

Always thought Cafe bikes should have caught on better than they did. My V7 Sport was intended for that vein.
The bike prior was an SL350 Honda with a Pacifico fairing, Honda 500/4 front end with a Kimtab snowflake mag wheel (what started the whole project), modified Honda 750 gas tank with 305 Hawk rubber pads, and a generic race seat. Sorry I never took pictures of it. It was IMHO a decent effort.
-
Where can one get a "cafe racer" seat that would work on a tonti frame? I'm also looking for some fork gaiters. Thanks!
Keep the cafes coming! They are too cool!

A gorgeous little black '63 CB-77 was my first "real" motorcycle.
At an honest 105 mph, it would outrun (and did outrun) any street-legal Harley I encountered in those days.
I really miss that bike . . . some early habits linger on: 48 years later I'm still enjoying "dusting" Harleys in the twisties as I ride yet another bike that few people have heard of !!

Man, an Ambassador 850 - now that's a rare one! ;D Ambassador = 750, Eldorado = 850 (unless someone has done a "bitsa" bike like my own '72 V7 Special/Ambassador 1000).

Guzzista Joe,
Great pics! Next time I'm in London I'll give you a shout! I did get a chance to visit Corsa Italia (I think that's the name) in south London and visited with the guys working there. They were a good group of guys. I even saw both of Ewen McGreggers (sp?) 2 Guzzis.
If you or your friends are ever in Virginia or Washington DC let me know. The mountains are only one hour away and I have an extra bed and cold beer!
Cheers,
Barker

This is one I'd built from scratch for a customer about 10 years ago. Engine is based on an early '50sTriumph T100 with those gorgeous alloy close pitch fins. Frame is Norton Slimline. Front brake Suzuki 4LS from a GT750 and rear a later Norton Commando with cush drive hub. Front end is a mix of Norton and other AMC parts. Much time and $$ spent on this project...
I hadn't seen it since it left the shop until I spotted it at the 2006 Isle of Vashon Ride in WA.
-
Although I think the Tonti Guzzi, Beezas, certain BMW's and even CB 750s make a fine Cafe' racer, Mark Dasher has the right idea.
Nobody ever played it like Chuck Berry...

A pal from the UK sent some photos awhile back of a beautiful Dresda Triton; a real Dave Degens' original. I've saving those for a future piece, but here's another just-finished example that was emailed to me last week:

...(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii159/Fixated_bucket/_ASC1013.jpg)...
We all know it is hard, very very hard, to match or exceed the styling lines of a properly built Guzzi.
That said, the above Honda comes mightily, almost eerily close......absolute ly sweet as pie & better to ride! The "Fliying French Horn" (as I believe it was affectionately called) CB550 was & is still to this day one very finely styled machine. Definitely much more delicate & properly proportioned vs. its larger relative CB750, which wasn't so bad itself.
The combination of the longer tank, bright red (is that Porsche "Gaurds Red"?), down-bars & four flat black exhaust is just painfully good looking.

Hard to argue. The abbreviated seat hump makes the tank look even longer, and is the styling key to the machine, IMO. The four black exhausts are very Gilera/MV-ish...and would probably look even better with the Magni 'angle'...if you know what I mean.
The nice thing about the Honda is that it's sorted too...a nice little engine. I recently picked up a 1975 CB750K and have cafe' plans for it. That tank/seat combo looks to be a must! I wonder if it'll fit on the750-frame?
-
Last week parked next to a '75 CB750K, last year I believe for the regular/original K series (returned '77 w/ all new styling & the '76 SS motor). Ate lunch in my truck whilst talking w/ the owner. He bought it in '84 w/ 10k; now had 75k miles & original shocks. Mentioned he might want to talk to the local dealer/service person about changing them. The reputation for shock longevity back then was about 2-3k miles IIRC.
Sad story: a friend/neighbor back in CA had totally restored a '69-'70 CB750K. Got first place award in at least one show. Not too long after that he got cancer, gone six months later; RIP. Death rate seems to maintain a steady rate of one per person.

1980 CX100 Lemans changed with:
Handle bars and Crash bars
Round headlight
Timing Gears
Cam
Dyna ignition
Higher compression pistons (at 10 to 1)
Lightweight Clutch kit
Rebuilt tranny
Ported
Bigger valves
Bigger carb
Sargent seat
Bub pipes
Did similar work to the Darmah

1980 CX100 Lemans changed with: <snip >Sargent seat <snip >
Can you elaborate on that Sargent Seat..? (ie: model #, $$$, comfort, quality, etc)
I'm always looking for ways to make my CX100's saddle more ergo-comfy...
Presently I have the Stucchi / Gaman dual, which is OK...

GuzziJack,
The Zagato/Guzzi hits me right where I live. That really is the stuff, isn't it? So elemental...just hit and nail, dead center.
Funny story:
I found that famous Davida ad on the floor of the pressroom at the Munich show a few years back, covered with footprints. While all my mates were out lifting pints I was back in my room, trying to wipe it off. Good paper; I got it all clean and it has lived happily on my shop wall ever since.
Where is Ben Part now, and what is he doing?

I know where you're coming from Nolan, although of the two bikes pictured I think the black framed OB2 gets my attention - by a short head - with it's deleted lower frame rails and abbreviated 'spine frame' style front downtubes, (same as the Deccla bike). Another example of Ben's monoshock work below - I think it might be the OB3 bike:
I'm not sure but I think Ben is freeelancing around Euroland - I lost contact with him a while back and I think Davida are probably fed up with trying to answer all the queries they receive about the Zagato bike in the advert - it must p*ss them off mightily when the prop gets more attention than the helmet, (and the model!). :D

Yeah, I agree...I'm all over it too.

I think it looks bitchin' and would be proud to own. With a few more $$ you could source a Sport tank, some narrow trees and make a smashing S3 copy.
Then again, you could also do nothing but enjoy it! That's a good plan too-
;D

I love looking at all these great bikes, very cool! Here is my T3 which I got from a NJ junk yard. No fancy high dollar bits just a lot of work and ideas from seeing other neat bikes out there. It may go in for a rehab this winter we shall see.

I like this bike just like it is. There is beauty in the simplicity of the T design. Would like to have one myself - yours looks real nice.

Nice bike, but what is a "Dukatenschiesser" :)
A Dukatenschiesser is a "Money-shyter" (http://www.burg-eltz.de/image/dukatenscheisser.gif) I guess in the old days in Germany, a guy would walk into a tavern, see a friend, and ask the friend to buy him a drink. The guy would reply, "Hey, do you think I S**T money?" ;D
Just a joke about the bike, as it has been purchased almost one part at a time, thus costing 2 times it's worth ;) The picture came from a website about a castle in Germany. Never been there, but it looks like a worthy place to visit:

I agree! There are some really, fabulous Guzzi's on this post! I like them ALL!! :) Your bike is also nice!
Where can I get a fork brace like that for my Le Mans-III? It looks like the type San Jose BMW used to offer...
JJ Cerilli
Fork brace is a Tarozzi from MG cycles, the front fender is a hacked down V50 plastic one with the stock T3 braces. i bought the seat on ebay but can't put my finger on the reciept just now, I know it wasn't from Cosmo motors his were all to small. this one had the right width and length I needed and came with the snap on cover. I cut the back a little to meet the stock cut down fender. All the electrics are mounted between the upper frame rails in a Homemade stainless steel tray just under the seat.

Man, an Ambassador 850 - now that's a rare one! ;D Ambassador = 750, Eldorado = 850 (unless someone has done a "bitsa" bike like my own '72 V7 Special/Ambassador 1000).
hah - i have an ambo 850 with a 5 speed gearbox...if i could only figure out how to jam the 5 speed tranny into a 4 speed box...
anyways, here's one i sold a few years back.

Nice Laverda's! :) :) :) I had an orange 1974 Laverda SF2 for awhile when I lived in Mesa, AZ.
I recall it being very "solid and sturdy" to ride, but heavy as well. The brakes were good and the engine strong.
I think they once billed these as "The Italian Norton's", but having owned a Norton Commando 850 as well, the SF2's were definitely not as nimble. Still , a great, classic bikes and highly collectible today! :) :) :) :)

I know where this town is...LOVELY! You should just save your money, schedule it, and GO!
Years ago, I took Edelweiss "Best of Europe" tour and it was fabulous! I never thought that years later, I would live and work in Aachen, Germany for two years! I wish the EURO was more favorable, as I would take another, but it is too expensive now...
While we were living there, I also took this "Scottish Highlands Tour" on vintage, British motorcycles. Another thumbs up!
I rode a different bike each day - Ariel Huntmaster, Triumph T110, and a Norton Dominator.
My wife (Karen) get mega-bonus points for being a brave passenger! One look at the scenery, and you can see it was not all that difficult to enure! :) :) :)

Here's an update to the Squadra Guzzista feature if you fellas are interested. The silver cafe racer shown above (Dougs) is no longer mine. I sold it last year as I wasn't using it enough to justify keeping it. I still have the MK1 and MK2 Le-Mans though and the 900 Monster. The MK1 is plodding along just nicely although the welded seams on the underside of the tank are starting to show some rust so that'll ahve to be done soon. The MK2 is going well too. I've just replaced the Lucas Rita with good ol' points and I've removed the straight cut 'box and put in a normal 5 speed. I found the gearing, particularly 1st, a bit too high for stop-start town traffic, and as I use the bikes for commuting it had to come out as the clutch was getting a real hammering.
Thanks for showing the pics Joe.

Hello, All.
I'm a newbie here who just found your site yesterday. I was searching on cafe racers (can never get enough) and stumbled into you guys. I've cafe'd almost everything I've owned including my Convert with sidecar; thus the screenname. If I can figure out how to get pics from my documents to this page, I'll post a few. Nothing too fancy but some fairly weird.
Can anybody give me a quick lesson on posting pictures? I'm a bit of a computer idiot who's tired (and embarassed) of asking his very understanding wife to do it for him.
-
Hi there, there are two ways to upload pics to the forum:
1:- With a photo hosting account, such as "Photobucket" and similar you upload the images from your PC into the image host service. Once the pics have uploaded look for the IMG code which will be displayed with the image. Simply copy that code and paste into the forum message window. The moment you submit the message the image will be displayed.
2:- If you find a pic on the internet somewhere you can right click the image with the mouse, then select "copy image location" from the pop-up menu. This copies the URL of the image into your PC's clipboard. In the forum message window, look for the "insert image" icon ( this is the second from the left just above the smileys ) Click that once, then right click and select paste, this adds the URL you have just copied. Then click the select image icon again. On the message window you should see something like this: [IMG]then the URL you pasted then /img] Once you submit your message the image you copied from the net will be displayed.
I hope that helps.
Regards
Joe

Thanks, Joe.
Let's see how I can bungle this...(http://)
Okay, so you say I need to use something like Photobucket. I have managed to successfully email pics straight from my docs and also to put them onto craigs list that way. Guess there's no way to go straight from computer memory to post?
Did I mention the word idiot?
-
Carl, there is something about the naked V11 that is just so right. Hanging any extra bodywork on them doesn't do it for me, not even the LeMans or Tenni. (Sorry guys)!

Now that is a nice bike. Too bad the factory can't make this sort of bike.
-
I do a lot of trackdays with more modern twins, and i always liked the looks of the 4v engine...so i bought one without even doing a test ride.
Loved the engine from day one but the handling was not to my liking aswell as the brakes and the tire limited choice you have on a 18 inch rim.
So it all started from there,i bought a set of mikuni 42mm flatslides they will go on the bike when the programble ignition is in because the weber injection unit is also intergrated in the ignition system.

Add a cafe' fairing and change the colour and we'd have a winner there.
-
If it's not amiss, I'll depart from the Guzzi theme while sticking with Cafe Racers. First, another in a long series of bikes I never should have sold. This is a Rickman CR that I built up from a brand new rolling chassis with a 750 Morgo-kitted, 5-speed Triumph Bonneville engine. What a sweet bike. I rode it from Michigan to Maine and back one summer, camped every night, ate lobster at least once a day and had the two middle fingers on my right hand go numb for months afterward. Vibration? Yes, why do you ask?
Next up is a classic John Player Norton in a naked white scheme. Reproduction, you ask? No. Just the result of a repaint and rebuild necessary after I crashed it on the ride home from Green Bay, WI to the Detroit area. Maiden voyage, indeed. At the time you couldn't buy the replacement striping kit for love or money. And I wouldn't want to try to find another set of the original black chrome black-cap silencers today. They were painful enough in the '70s.
I'll end with a project I've been diddling with for over 20 years. It started out as my idealized mental image of a Cafe Norton, but based on the last model 850 MK III Commando electric start. This one has a 920cc kit, Amal MK II carbs, Curley Specialised Mouldings seat and tank, Ian Kennedy full fairing (bought from Mr. Kennedy his self), Akront high-flange alloy wheels, hand pinstriping in the traditional Norton livery, and a wealth (trust me, I've added it up once) of the nicest goodies available. And it's still not done! In the meantime, I've aged considerably and may not be the spry young lad who once thought nothing of throwing a leg over such a contraption. When I finally finish it they may have to lift me vertically from my walker and lower me on to the seat. But I'll go out with a flourish.

Hey WeirdTim,
That is one sweet bike. Maybe the Moto Guzzi design team should take a leaf from your book as this is just the type of bike Guzzi should be building with a BIG twin motor not the small twin motor they are using like in the V7 Classic. It's a credit to you! :P

There are a lot of really great looking bikes on this post.
Appreciate the praise from Ireland and the UK as well.
I'm always making "improvements" with simplicity. Thinking about removing the turn signals, but not sure yet. We'll see.
Weevee that MV is something else......a bike with a fairing where you can still see the velocity stacks....way cool.

I think I once read that Ferrari made ONE (model) motorcycle. Is that true? More details needed! :)

I don't know a lot about it but it sure caught my eye and it is or was for sale. This bike is the only one with a Ferrari chasis number (original Ferrari). More info here

-
WOW!!! Check this out! - This is from that website - also - some more great photos of this bike there as well! :) :) :) Imagine pulling up to your local "Bike Night" on this bad-boy?!? :o :o :o :o :o :o
Ferrari seems to agree, as the only cycle ever created that bears an official Ferrari chassis number -- SF-01M -- has true sporting pretensions.
Built by David Kay Engineering and completed in 1995, this one-and-only Ferrari motorcycle sports a DOHC engine displacing 900cc and putting out 105 horsepower at 8,800rpm. The only styling choice we take exception with are the Testarossa-style strakes on either side, but nothing's perfect, right?
So, what's the only officially official Ferrari bike worth? We'll find out for sure when the auction ends on the 20th, but the expected price is between 325,000-375,000 Swiss francs, or around $300K in U.S. dollars.
-
*cough*MV Agusta *cough* *cough*
Neat bike, but 300K neat, not really. Would rather have the inline four MV over the Ferrari junker any day. No, wait a minute, I would rather just stick to my 850T's....they do just fine.
-
WeirdTim -
Agree with you on that one! $300K could buy you SEVERAL "stock" MV Agusta's! (with a lot of $$$$ left-over!) :o :o :o :o
Although a cool and interesting motorcycle - totally impractical! Imagine trying to get parts?!? :o :o :o :o
How about if you accidentally dropped it or high-sided it? Wheeeeeeeeeeee!!! ::) ::) ::) ::)

Is it really a Ferrari or what? Looks like a 4-cylinder MV Agusta (?).
The only actual Ferrari-made parts on this bike are the fuel tank cap and its badges. A project of Dave and Mark Kay, they were given permission to use the Ferrari badge by Enzo's son, Piero. The frame was built by British grass-tracker Denny Barber, and the (hand beaten aluminium) bodywork is the work of Terry Hall, a craftsman from Shropshire. Instrumentation (digital) is a Demon Tweakes unit.
Yes, its engine is based upon the MV race unit of the 1950s (..as were all the road-going MV fours of the seventies era). Dave and Mark Kay build replicas of these MVs for the road. Engine/frame detailing on this bike is superb IMHO, but its styling lets it down big time. (The seat unit in particular..!) More photos can be seen here: http://thebikemuseum.com/master_view.php?id=22&view=48&MV%20Agusta%20-%20Kay&Ferrari
On the subject of 'badge engineering': MV (as a motorcycle manufacturer) ceased production in the late seventies, having won 37 manufacturers' world championships and 38 riders' world championships. Agostini, Hailwood, Surtees - and a great many others - made their names whilst competing on these machines. But in the immortal words of John Cleese; they are no more!
Modern day 'MVs' (nice bikes, I won't deny) were designed and built by another company altogether - Cagiva. There is no connection between the two companies. Cagiva merely bought the rights to use the famous MV name. What's more, they've milked it ever since.

Happy new year everyone. I'm new to Moto Guzzis, but picked up this nice old 850T a couple months ago and am in the process of doing up a proper 70s cafe racer. I bought a 1974 Kawasaki 750 H2 triple new when I was 18 and kept it for 30 years. I did a nice cafe job on that bike and have missed having a bikini fairing in the garage ever since I let it go. This bike turned up on eBay and is now my winter project. I am grateful for all the info and links I've found on this site. I hope to have it road ready by April.

This bike turned up on eBay and is now my winter project. I am grateful for all the info and links I've found on this site. I hope to have it road ready by April.
I'm sure I'll have questions along the way, and I'll try to post updates as progress is made.
Cheers!
Looks like you have a great starter bike for a cafe project! Mine began its life in a NJ junk yard and required many many hours of work. There are lots of nice cafe Guzzis to get ideas from and some good sources for parts out there as well.

(http://i474.photobucket.com/albums/rr109/mlwrehwald/DSC09288.jpg) A little detailing and some bits and peices from E-bay will make that one heck of a nice machine. Congrats ! BTW, how does she run?
-
Thanks for the encouragement! I'll start a new thread to discuss how she runs to keep the cafe post undiluted. Look for 850T Black Cafe link. And keep those cafe racer pix coming! This is a great resource for us knee scrapers.

I got one of those fairings with the V7 Sport, but the PO had removed it to put on the Bates apehangers (I still shudder). Kept it all these years, but lost the headlight cover. Anybody got one lying around they want to part with? Or will I have to make a buck (mold, form, whatever) and mold my own?

This café racer version of Triumph’s Thunderbird 1600 has been put together in Sweden.
Assembled by Sivert Raask, of rear-sets and accessories specialists, Raask, it features a new tank, seat, exhausts and fairing.
Sivert said, “Café racers have always been my favourite bikes. Back in 1967 I bought a boat ticket from Gothenburg to London, bought a used Norton Atlas, then brought it home and rebuilt it as a café racer.I did the same with a Commando.
“More recently I’ve built café racer versions of the latest Bonneville and Rocket III so when I first saw the new Thunderbird I immediately thought it would be perfect to make into a café racer.”
Sivert bought the bike in August, and transformed it over the winter, fitting his own rearsets and a new speedometer.
The tank is from a Ducati 900, while the seat is home-made, inspired by the likes of the classic Matchless G50 and AJS 7R.
“It was finished just before Christmas,” Sivert said, “the only problem is I haven’t had a chance to ride it yet.”

Nice Honda. In '73 I bought a pre-K CB500/4 and Dunstalled it. Ran that bike ragged all over New England, Quebec, New York and New Jersey. Then I fell in love with a Laverda and the Honda had to go, but I wish I had it back. Funny thing: One day in '75 I came out of my apartment in Manhattan to find three Japanese gentlemen scrutinizing the Honda. Their American minder said they were Honda execs and very excited to see a cafe-style B500. I like to think this was a pivotal moment in Honda's corporate history.

The owners apparently try to make something really stylish, but end up with the opposite.
I share garage/workshop with 2 other guys,- and one of them owns this Weslake powered Featherbed.

But nasty to start.
One of my friends almost broke his leg trying to kick it.
First start this spring, we ended up towing it behind a car, as we were all afraid to kick start it (I've kick started it myself several times, very nasty kickback if you get it wrong).

I have used to nasty kickbacks from old soviet motorcycles, they did not have electrical starter at all. The trick was that you had to kick it with your toes of your foot, not the central part or heel part of feet. If it kicks back, it just slips away under your toes and it does not hurt this way nor breaks your legs. Before you really kick, you have to push it slowly downward until you feel resistance (compression in the cylinder) and only then you kick with force. Pushing downward with force "through it", using your body weight if necessary, rather than kicking actually. Have not tried to kickstart Ducati, but I guess the same would apply.

The SS must be non-standard in some way... they are not particularly difficult to kick start, easier than a big single. The only unusual thing with bevel Ducatis is that you don't normally start them mounted in the saddle because the kick starter swings out too far. Instead you start them from the right side of the bike, on the center stand, kicking with your right foot. Good practice is to keep your knee slightly bent in case it kicks back.

Think Scotts or Vincents... generally not single shocks but the right gemetry.

That's a great looking bike. It wouldn't take much to make it into a practical road ride, either (starting with the seat and lack of mudguards, and perhaps just a hint of muffler).

That's a great looking bike. It wouldn't take much to make it into a practical road ride, either (starting with the seat and lack of mudguards, and perhaps just a hint of muffler).
I really like this SP1000 from Firestarter Garage too.

well....this is my bike. Bought it new and has 70k miles on it.....perhaps not a true cafe but I love it. Motor pulls from 1k rpm to 11k. Jetted, Micron Can, Holeshot Advancer, fork has Race Tech Gold Valves and progressive springs, Progressive 420 rear shock, Renthall bars, bellypan, ss brake lines, HH pads, Mich PR2s, Suzi rack and bra (!) + other tassles & doo dads.

Here's my Yamaha XS850 that I just finished at the beginning of August, and then the pic of it 2 weeks later after a lady pulled out from a stop sign right in front of me. The dent in the gas tank is from my left knee. 60% of my ligament was torn and removed in surgery.

Ken, nice work on the Yamaha! Sorry to hear about the knee. I remember you saying something about a knee injury, but didn't know it was from a bike accident. Did her insurance cover your medical bills? I hope.

Sorry. I thought the show was pretty lame. It was choppily edited so you never got to really look at the bikes, and the sound quality was crap -- the guy who shot the cafe interviews didn't bother to mike the interviewees, so their voices were overwhelmed by background noise. Annoying stuff. Didn't really learn anything from it.

The only thing that lets the SR500 down is the curved, rather than cranked, kickstart lever - I would have to have one with straight lines.

Is that freakin' real? Good Lord, it looks like an engine off of the titanic. I think it's an over sized model of an engine, the window ledge would surely have collapsed under the weight of an engine that size and the apparent support lines to the ceiling don't look to be of too large a gauge either. Where was this photo taken anyway? I wonder if the other side of the engine sports a kick start lever...
Looks like the Guzzi factory museum and that someone has been busy with Photoshop. I've seen the same photo of the World Record Bike and there was no humongous Lodola engine in it.

Actually you've got me doubting my own eyes now. When I posted this, as a bit of a joke (found it elsewhere on the forum), I assumed it was a bit of an optical illusion and the engine (Lodola?) was hanging on wires from the ceiling close to the camera???

Not really a "cafe", but I thought y'all might enjoy this photo of my friend Joseph's '56 Matchless G11CS. Ran for the first time on Saturday afternoon. He bought it as a basketcase and has been rebuilding it (with some help from me) over the last two years. Not totally correct (18" rear wheel vs. 19", 19" front wheel vs. 21", different tank, Dellorto VHB27 vs. Amal, etc.) but I think he's done an excellent job. Notice the two things he thought were necessary for a successful "first fire" - holy blessing and an assortment of Whitworth spanners. Just out of frame is the fire extinguisher... ;D

Left the Guzzi at home and took the MV for a run today. Great fun, but very different from the Le Mans. Unlike that on the Guzzi, the shaft on the MV has no discernible effect on the gear-change. It just snicks into gear like a chain-drive machine. Brakes are drums, so nowhere near as good as those on the Guzzi. (..in fact the brakes limit the performance of the MV much more than the engine!) Engine's actually a belter, it pulls like a train. It feels like it has the edge over the Guzzi - it's certainly more responsive lower down in the rev-range.
The MV feels a good deal larger/heavier/more unwieldy to man-handle than the Le Mans, but on the move (..and at sane speeds) the weight seems to disappear and it handles just as well. Its steering is very neutral. It's not as happy as the Guzzi in dealing with the cut-and-thrust of city-centre traffic though, 'cause the clutch becomes 'grabby' as it gets hot.
The sound the MV makes as it climbs above 5,000rpm is ungodly. It actually hurts my ears (..and that's despite my wearing ear-plugs!) - for this reason the Guzzi is by far the more relaxing on any high-speed cruise. If I ever need to cover the miles, the Guzzi is my first choice.
Three hours today on the MV, and whilst the sun was glorious the temp was down at freezing point. My hands soon became numb. How I wished for the Guzzi's twin-pots to keep my fingers warm!!
ps. To comment belatedly on a post I read not so long ago regarding the prettiest fuel tank ever fitted to a motorcycle: The Le Mans' is just pipped by that on the MV I'm afraid. :o

Ahhh... the age old "who has the prettiest fuel tank" question :D The early Le Mans tank is a good one, but I think the Daytona RS's is better... and better even than the indisputably cool MV's tank.
I have an elaborate mid-70s 750 America fold-out brochure that has some really cool period photos. It came from a guy who was friends with my uncle. Apparently he bought one new, and I got the brochure years later. The story was that after a couple of years he decided it was no a no-good, unreliable archaic thing, sold it, and bought a "much better" Honda 750 instead.... From that I learn that contemporary reviewers and new bike buyers very often don't 'get it'. When it comes to motorcycles, popular opinion has value only in presenting bargains to the better educated buyer.
Notice that the gas cap isn't straight on the RS tank... they are all like that. :D

I like that one, I must admit. Very clean lines. But in visualising it without its adjoining fairing I'm not so sure. I think I still prefer the early Le Mans item.
The MV tank really needs to be seen in three dimensions to be fully appreciated. It's almost flying saucer like in the way its base spreads to cover the full width of the engine. (..MV produced a small single cylinder bike in the late fifties called the Disco Volante - 'Flying Saucer' - which took its name from the way its tank spread at the base in much the same way).
My own bike is an SS - although it's currently wearing 'Sport' livery. The SS was a model based on the Sport, but it was fitted with larger carbs (..even larger than those fitted to the later 850cc Monza) higher compression head etc., and a long alloy tank/single seat. There were only a handful of these models built & sold in Germany and the UK. Mine came to the UK from Stuttgart fitted with the tank you can see in the second photo, but I found it was too much of a stretch to the 'bars so retro-fitted it with a 'Sport' item. I've an 'America' tank to go on it too when I feel the urge to switch!
ps. Some - ahem! - MV gurus say that the SS is a mythological creature, and that it didn't/doesn't actually exist. Others disagree!

Strangely enough with Aermacchi 350 jetting it worked pretty well right off. A little fine tuning is under way - it seems to need a larger pilot jet, smaller main and starter jets. Joseph had it laying around and his Amal was knackered, so I rebuilt the Dellorto and machined an adapter to mount it.

I love that S3 one of the first bikes to attract me to Guzzi, although in those days I could only stare at them and have a poster.
I'm with Weevee, the best sculpted tanks bar none were the MVs. My Magni is similar in shape and when you look at them from different angles it is simply amazing the way they curve and swoop in 3D. Definitely gotta be seen in the flesh to be appreciated and mine is just a poor copy of the real thing that Weevee is privileged enough to own.
I believe that The Tank Shop may start to make tanks similar to the MV/Magni shape possibly towards the end of the year if my grape vine is correct

Yep, it's all my work the pegs are actually CNC cut rearsets off of a GSXR GSX-R 1100. The gearbox looks like it's hanging out in the middle of nowhere because there is no lower frame rails and because the rearsets are so far back. Thanks for the good word ! !

There's a small plastic cover in the center covering a hole for an allen key. That will pop off easy.
The top nut is the big, domed thing (that you may be referring to as the cover).
First, remove the bars...
Loosen the pinch bolts on the forks and the pinch bolt on the stem, remove the chromed top nut, then lift the top clamp off. It may take some urging with a rubber mallet.
-
Bob,
After you get them down (bars that is), I would seriously start looking for a windscreen that is more cafe. What I mean is a screen that actually comes back and down. My friend has that identical bike and a screen similar to yours and got all sorts of buffeting at his helmet. He took the screen off (naked) and we rode all over the backroads at 60-80mph and he felt nothing around his head like before. Sure... more around his shoulders, but things were quiet around his head. He loves it so much more, and we're starting to figure out why windscreens that come back and down (instead of more vertical) are better against buffeting and instead allow a smoother flow and a consistent flow of air around the helmet instead of a vacuum directly behind and a clashing (or coming together) of air back around your helmet. It's really amazing how comfortable a bike can be when you don't have someone boxing your ears constantly. How do I know? I put the stocker screen back on my V11 Lemans the other night and took off the MRA (taller with lip and a bit more vertical), and oh my this bike is so easy on the rider now!!! Looks are deceiving!

Just saw this on Sport Touring Net.
The frame color should be changed and maybe the seat too but otherwise I love. I winder how a Nickel or Red colored frame would look on that bike?

Sfida taken after the rebuild. Looks much the same now except the headers are wrapped as they started to flake a little.
In the Winter I'm thinking about side and center stand coated matt black and front guard sprayed red to match the rest of the paintwork

I built this Suzuki Savage with a Ryca kit last fall and really enjoyed the process. A bit of frame cutting was involved but no welding (a good thing since I have no welder) and some mods to the steel tank and rear wheel hub. The end result is a compact and very light bike with surprisingly good handling and speed. http://www.rycamotors.com/

Actually "batteries" - two 4-cell Ballistic Li-Fe batteries. One under tank between frame rails and the other just inboard of starter hanging from left lower frame.
Tank is from Legendary Motorcycles.

Should be ready to ride in a month or so as I am down to a custom pipe being mandrel bent at the moment.
As soon as my Guzzi shows up I will do the formal intro...promise!

Thanks Chuck. It will look even better when I am done. They are Mistrals. Not too loud but a nice deep mellow tone. Sometimes I think they should be louder but they are probably fine as is.
They sound great, not what anyone would say is too loud though.

That's a good one! BTW the frame isn't chrome, they stopped one step before at nickle and actually there is very little chrome but a whole lot of polishing.

Probably a dumb question: do you ever get blinded by sun reflecting off of the chrome tanks? I love the look but live in Texas with lotsa intense sun.
Geeze, ya gotta wonder. One of the worst vehicles ever for reflection is my Mercedes ML and the light off the facets of the star in the center of the steering wheel. Such a small thing yet so very intrusive. After that it's the sun off my Calvin clocks if the sun is behind and over my shoulders.
When your whole bike is a solar deflector (convex though most of it may be) it must lead to horrendous sunburn under the chin and the bottom of the nostrils. Doubtless not unlike making the mistake of polishing the inside of an aluminum boat hull then spending a day in the sun drinking fishin' beer drinkin' beer fishin' beer and beer. Yup, seen that movie too. The sunscreen comes after the dehydration enhanced hangover.

I've got no problem with it...or the testa rossa included. I wonder tho' if the Record kit puts her into more of a "retro factory racer" category as opposed to a Cafe' Racer category. Just a question for others, Does a bike with a full/half fairing belong in a Cafe' category?? I always thought of a cafe' as more of a stripped down machine.

Some pics of a recent build by a British guy, John, (aka Mad Johnny) I met a few years back when he was riding across the US. I suspect he met some other people here as well.

I just did my introduction and I found the article of my boxer and my friends Guzzi so I thought I'd post it here. As I mentioned in the introduction a Guzzi was very close to being my first bike and they've crossed my path for my entire motorcycling life so I knew it was only a matter of time before I got one. I now own a very similar LeMans IV to the first one "that got away" and I'm looking forward to building it.
Anyway, this is an article that was written about my boxer and my friend Tom's Guzzi. His bike was a huge inspiration in the build of my bike and it was a thrill to have them featured together. Sorry for the bad scans but it should be high enough res to read.

Gregor, Glad to see that you still have the bike. Do you see much of Simone? I assume he still has his V7 Sports.
Tom
PS. Remember that ride a bunch of us did up to Lars Anderson back in 98/99? and we ended up staying in the dishwasher's house because we couldn't find a motel?

I don't see Simone much now that he's a big rock star! Although I'd emailed him about the Guzzi before I bought it and he's offered to get my parts from Italy if I need. He very much is a collector of V7's now. That ride was one of the most fun I remember. Cold, rain, and how those guys thought we wanted to party and all we wanted was a warm place to sleep. Still one of my favorite stories.

I've got a 140/70-18 on a 4" wide rim on the rear of my LMIV, but it has a Magni swingarm.
They have a version that uses a 4.5" rime and a 160/70-17 rear tire.
My sidecar LMIV has a 155/70-13 on a 4" wide rim with a standard swingarm, but it's offset to the left 1/2" or so.

Thanks. I'm considering options for my Lemans and I'd like to end up with a 160 as I like that size for both look and feel. I assume most have seen the Dynotec bikes - http://www.dynotec.de (http://www.dynotec.de). They're quite nice:

Small block, V65 crankshaft, Pankl connecting rods, 81mm Suzuki Hayabusa modified pistons (so, 660 cm3 displacement), custom made 2 valves heads with single on head camshaft and trapezioidal combustion chamber, Dell'Orto PHM 40mm carburetors,
Built by a local (of Mandello) group of enthusiasts and engineers. The bike weighs about 130kg, and the engine deliver around 100 hp at 13500 rpm, being probably the most powerful Guzzi small block ever.
They are actually building a dry sump version of the engine.

Good question? Hopefully someone here will recognize it? I'm guessing it is from a British bike.

That is a normal V7 Sport tank. The lighting is from down low and casts a shadow up against the the bottom of the tank which makes it look like the tank is wrapping around the head.

This is what I built from a 85 Cali 2 with 105,000 miles on the engine. I fabricated everything from scraps parts and suits my minimalist hillbilly style. And it may be the only Guzzi here to hold a land speed record ;D

I'm late to the party going on in these pages, but I ran across a box of slides from almost thirty-five years ago that I just scanned. The images haven't aged well, but I thought I'd post them anyway.
They're from a trip I and my then g.f. took from Connecticut, north, then west across part of Canada, west to Oregon, San Diego and back to Connecticut. My Le Mans never as much as hiccuped over the course of the entire trip, including a stupid midday trek at the start of the journey back east from San Diego to Connecticut along the Mexican border in August. I hadn't been that hot in my life, the bike handled it without protest. Not much about cafes or racing as pertains to the thread, but the bike is sporting clip-ons, so I figured there was at least one qualifier.
best,
Marcus

Hi Roofus,
Nice looking bikes but what really caught my eye were the "bullies". So your named after the great Westminster champ?? ;) We have a beautiful girl who is going to celebrate her 10th birthday tomorrow. She is our third having had two males before her. They are personalities personified aren't they? We've never had one that took to the water though. PM me if you would like. scmurdock@uninets.net

Thanks, Petrus.
All my friends at the time rode BMW's, I had had several myself, and they were aghast that I would consider a Le Mans a suitable bike for a 10,000 mile journey and predicted mechanical disaster or at least the demise of my and my g.f.'s relationship. None of which proved true. One friend suggested we sit atop a 2 x 6 attached to our washing machine with a blanket inside on spin in order to anticipate what we'd encounter.
I'm six foot two, and I do recall having difficulty straightening my knees at the end of the first few days, but that went away. The decline of the passenger section of the seat probably looked great on the drafting table and in design presentations in Mandello del Lario, but every major bump would send my girlfriend sliding forward. The poor woman spent the trip trying to push herself back to the 66 square inches of seating she was allocated.

Clever use of the 850T tool boxes, they really work.

Found this on the interweb.
Omega Racer, they do beautiful aluminium tanks and fairings, mainly for SR500s, but I'm sure they would work on a guzzi. Nice prices too.

Me too.
More, i find it so good it could be produced.
The Royal Enfield Continental GT weights 184 kg, 29 hp, and costs 5790 Euro in Italy.

This Cafe Racer, with some minor refinement, is miles head in terms of aesthetics, is more functional (IE, dual seat), and weights 150 kg at most.
Make it produce 35-40 hp and put it on the market at 6000-6500 Euro.

That is all wrong! Simply not a candidate for a cafe job IMO. That rear end has to go... but wait... it can't.

Went to Dumfries in Scotland last time o/s, to visit the Tank Shop, very accomodating old fella and showed me through his shop. Absolute Alladin's cave. Not far from Loch Ness, although you'll need a Tom Tom to get to it, it's kinda in the back woods a bit. Some of the alloy tanks in shot are his work aren't they ?

Wow, I don't like it even a little bit.
Retro engine but modern forks, mono-shock and brakes.
Strangs angles on a strangely angled tank. But then, I have yet to see one of these tanks outside of its intended location with intended, complimentary bodywork, ever look good.
Rear fender is either too long or too short depending upon one's take.
I guess at least, it does not have those limp-wristed, bar-end mirrors.
What a mess.
Todd.

I like it a lot.

Weren't you phraising the Thruxton in another tread? ;)
However, to me it resembles the 1000 GT, and I think that's the intention of the owner.

Good point on the Thruxton. Made me think about it again. Sure, the early Guzzi based one looks like the Ducati to a great degree and I do like the Thruxton but I think the Triumph and Ducati would come off poorly too if not for being well balanced objects.
Another very large part of the design conflict for me is the dated engine on the goose. Were the Triumph or Ducati to have true "period" engines in them, they'd smack fould for me as well.... I think.
Maybe, ultimately, it's just that seat and that tank begging greater overall scrutiny? Too, being ass high while riderless isn't helping those angles much, I guess.
Todd.

Yeah, the fact that a "classic-looking-but-modern-details-vielding" bike use a real vintage, and not particularly sporty, engine can be a little unsettling.
But, apart from the fact that I like the general appearance, having found a more detailed image, I'm stunned by the sheer amount of work involved.
The tank seems to be metal, and doesn't seem to come from another bike (maybe i'm wrong, but I don't recognize it).
The seat resembles that of the Ducati, but is not that of the Ducati, and is made to match with the tank.
The frame is a real perimetral frame, custom made for this bike.
So is the monoshock rear swingarm.
Let alone details as the footpegs.
At this point, I'd be really surprised if he didn't something to the engine too. In the end, for how much dated it seems, the 500 horizontal single is an hemi head oversquare engine with 26 hp (in the Nuovo Falcone) with a compression ratio of only 6.85/1 (to make it function with low octane fuel). It's already more powerful than a Yamaha SR400.
To make it produce some more pony, and put it in the same ballpark of several modern days singles is not so difficult.

Reviving an old thread here.
Took my shed built Zagato Guzzi cafe racer out from under its winter blankets last week to go to a custom bike show over here called Kickback.
When I was a teenager, I fell in love with Katrien who was a model sitting on a Guzzi in that famous Davida poster.
Well, four years ago, I stumbled across that very same picture, but because Im much much older, I fell for the Guzzi she was sat on instead now !
In short the bike was owned by Ben Part, the person taking the photograph and he had built it over several years and put some Zagato badges on the tank as a tribute to the Milan design house famous for lightweight aluminium racing bodies for Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin etc
Well my Zagato is a tribute to his, I do hope you like it.
Heres my Zagato together with with Ben Parts Zagato and the lovely Katrien

I was in London in April and made it to the famous Ace Cafe and had a blast!! Lots of cool bikes and riders from all over. I love the cafe racer style and think Guzzis make some of the coolest cafes!!!
Tell me more about your visit to the Ace. I may fly into Heathrow this fall and was wondering if I should head up that way for a look-see.
