If anybody is in the area of Monson, Ma. on April 19th 2009, I'll be hill climbing my 1985 Moto Guzzi Lemans in it's first hill climb competition. They call the hill, the "MONSON MONSTER". It's about 320' in length and gets quite steep as you near the top! The club is the QUABOAG RIDERS M/C in Monson, Ma.
The bike is basically, a stock Lemans (no engine work). I just took off all the 'road stuff', put on a smaller gas tank, an aggressive knobby on back and a wide 16" tire on front, dirt bike handle bars, a smaller seat and shorty pipes. I haven't done anything to the length of the swing arm yet... I may not, but we'll see how it goes in the first couple of races.
I haven't even had the bike running yet. I was told that it ran two years ago! I still have a few things to do...new gas lines, change oils, check the valve adjustment, get rid of all the wires I don't need and put on some wires that I do need... 'dead man switch', starter button etc...
I hope the gearing is OK, 'cause there's not much I'm going to change with that, but ... IT SHOULD BE FUN !!!!!
I'll be riding in the OPEN class and the 50+ age class.
I hope to see some Moto Guzzi enthusiasts there.

Oh hell yeah!!! A Guzzi hill-climber. I'm sure the New England Guzzisti will come out in force!
-
You, sir, are crazy. I love it! I'll try to get there.
-
Hey good luck!!! Make Carlo proud.
-
When I'm finished building this 1000cc 'beauty'... I'll post some pics. Probably a week or two away.
-
Randy,
Get me an event POC so I can obtain a photo pass at the top and I'll be there... 8)
P.S. Have I told you ta-day that you are a nut...?
Ciao,
Rob
-
Rob,
I don't believe you need a pass, but I'll check and uh... no, you haven't told me today yet. By the way, I'm not crazy... but I am a carrier! HAAAAA!!

Seriously, be careful. In serious hillclimbing, the front wheel is off the ground most of the time, and then the torque of that engine will tend to make it want to turn turtle. Sounds fun to try it, though.

Yep. And watch out for that torque effect too. It always trys to throw the bike on its right side. ;) ;) ;)
Randy, You're nuts! But that sure sounds like a fun thing to do! I can't wait to see the fabricated long swing arm!

I'm not sure yet, as to how the torque will affect this bike. My V-50 flat tracker shows no ill effect, only when 'hitting' the throttle in neutral. Once I take off though, it tracks pretty straight. I have had the front wheel come up off the ground though. I just put 28mm Mikuni carbs on my V-50. The dyno readout showed 41 rear wheel horsepower and I believe, 39 lb/ft of torque. Not bad for a little 1978 500cc Moto Guzzi street bike turned dirt tracker. We'll see HOW different the 1000cc is on 'take-off'. I hill climbed a 750cc Norton last year. I believe the Lemans may have a little more OOOMPH! I'm hoping so.

Good luck Randy. I admire your choice in sports - dirt track and hill climbing are my favorites.

Good Luck!!
Here's a link to a Quad on the "MONSON MONSTER" for a feel for it.

That's freaking great. A Goose on the loose. Throwing dirt and all.
-
Randy, do you mind if I cross post on NEMotoGuzzi? Your Guzzi hill-climber project was the talk of the last Mass breakfast. Lots of interest.
-
I don't mind at all. I'm hoping to see some Guzzisti in Monson on April 19th.
-
I just ran across this thread during a search.
We demand video! :PICS!:
