EDIT - FINAL VERSION WAS:
-
Ye old Jackal, MG sport screen, Lucas style tail light, MG crash bar, Gran Tourismo grips, Napoleon bar end mirrors, low flat track style bars, aluminium rear turn signals mounted to frame just under seat, highway pegs mounted to frame just under crash bar, 30 Lt. HB bags (not pictured), EPA crap ripped off and vac. connected between cylinder heads, dropped rear fender about an inch with a drill and some plugs for the old holes, Last and most important cut air box top off, Lafranconi mufflers and PCIII brought it all together nicely.

Here is mine as it was;
Changes from standard;
EV touring screen, rack and pannier mount.
Heated grips
Harpers footboards
Fiam twin horns
Cush drive modified
Front crash bar
Centre stand from a Cali 3
Since then I added a GPS mount.
Being done this winter;
Second disc
Mudguards stripped and powder coated. (the paint bubbles up after time)
The screen frame, crash bar and rack dechromed and powder coated black
Wheels done the same.
Fork lowers repainted as original
Heads and engine repainted.
Nicked the idea for most of the dechroming from Kev in the "how black can we go" pic,I liked the "de blinged" look. After 8 years it was getting to the "sell or tidy up stage" and it will never be sold.
-
Charcoal canisters fell off, and I put on the crash bar, Fiamms, head guards, sport screen, 2nd front disc, lots of tires and lots of miles. 100,350 miles this AM on the way to work. Black Y2K Jackals are the best of the modern Moto Guzzis!

YUP, that's where I was getting too - decided to go with tidy up - but I didn't have a choice cause of the rust that was coming through on that back fender for me :-[

Here's my silver '00, sporting her wintertime Guzzi "barn door" shield, which keeps me toasty and, more importantly, dry.
Also has MG footboards and crash bars, centerstand, Harley air shocks, Vista Cruise control, National Cycle bags, Hepco Becker rear rack with back pad, front spots, gel grips, Stucchi crossover...
And here she is with her new lower Hepco Becker rack, which allows me to run a top case that can be removed in seconds.

One of the prettiest MGs I've ever seen was a pristine black Y2k Jackal with solo seat, drag bars, those nice paint matched sculpted bags... just stunning in a minimalist kinda way.... absolutely lovely bikes. Kinda wish I had hunted one down instead of the EV.
-
Glen, I have changed a lot on my EV. if you want to see it. I live in Astoria, NY. not to far away. PM me if you're interested.

Yes, the Jackal is the best of modern Guzzi. Minimal in a modern way. Really wish it had modern drum brakes up front and out back. Some day I may hit 100k, only 26k now.

Hey Kev,
Did you spray paint your rims or have them done? They look good!

The cheap Italian chrome was peeling allowing the rim to rust, so Jenn and I hand sanded em, taped the spokes, and sprayed the rims black with rattle can wheel paint. It's holding up pretty well, but we have to touch up a little spot here or there when we replace tires.
-
I sold my Jackal back in the spring, but here she is set up how I used to run 'er as a bagger. I know some folks love their Hepco-Beckers, but for my money, nothing looks better on Jackals than color matched National Cycle Cruiseliner bags. The curve of the fender and the bags are a perfect match.
I ran it with the solo seat, MG rear luggage rack, MG Jackal Tour Shield...

Color-matched National Cycle bags do look great - especially on something brighter like that Red one.
I still prefer the HBs purely from a rugged functional perspective (not to mention I can pop em off the Jackal and onto the Breva or vice-versa - and they match the HB trunk with the same functionality).
-
Kev,
Beautiful Jackal. That's something I would like to do.
When I was in Illinois for a spell and my EV was out of commission, I met a client who had 77 motorcycles in his hanger. He lent me his Jacket that had 14 miles on it. He found the Jackal a bit intimidating to ride. Needless to say, I found the Jackal to be a fine machine. Well balanced and a joy to ride.

Grazie!
But man oh man - 77 motorcycles - I can't imagine someone who has owned one or two bikes beforehand finding a Jackal intimidating - nevermind 77 - but then again, I can't actually imagine owning 77

He is quite the collector. I didn't mention his 6 antique airplanes and 3 everyday planes. He has cars everywhere. But at last, he has little time to enjoy what he has collected.
I (like many of you) only have enough to support and ride one bike.

But I'm blessed with so much already that I feel greedy.

There is definitely some nice stuff here. I think the straight (vs pullback) handlebars are the mod I would like to incorporate into my CalVin. That seems like something that would make the entire bike work better (more comfort, control, and better weight distribution). Kudos to all...
-
Sheepdog
I agree with you regarding regarding handlebar replacement on the calvin. Entirely too much handlebar there doing not much of anything. Wrong place on a bike to make a fashion statement. please post any replacement possibilities you come across.
Thanks
Harry

Are the bars on the cal-vin THAT much more pulled back than say a Jackal?
Just Curious...
-
I estimate that the riser/bar combo that I want to try will move my hands forward by about 2". In addition, a wierd wrist angle the the stock bar demands is eliminated. Considering how functional most parts of my Guzzi are, I was surprised that they chose this bend on a bar that is difficult (read: expensive) to replace. Its not too bad during daily use, but on a long trip my wrists get pretty stiff.

I must be either incredibly weird or incredibly average cause I almost always fit my bikes stock - including the Jackal, Breva, my last RK, most of my Sportsters (but not my wife's SHorTsters, as she buys em low with the pulled back bars and forward scrunching seats etc - then again, even they're fine enough for a couple of hundred miles).

This is what I'm thinking about for switching out handlebars:
GenMar 7/8" handlebar clamps:
http://www.casporttouring.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CST&Product_Code=13010&Category_Code=Moto_Guzzi
and some Renthal Street Bend Aluminum handlebars in the Universal/Tall bend:
http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=594462&catId=410&leafCatId=41012
These handlebars are available in grey, silver, and gold. This bend has a wide center section...essential for the 5.5" (total width) clamp spacing. Total cost...about $130.

you might consider factory EV or Jackal bars as a compromise vs Calvin bars.

Hi,
admiring your Jackal. I've got a 2003 California Stone. I wanted to add a second disk. I see you were planning on doing the same. Do you mind sharing with me how to manage hooking the lines up into the progressive system? I've never added a disk brake to a bike before so would like to know what they steps are.

They're a little flatter still though.

I'm talking about
ProTaper brand "CR High" bend bars (less pull back than stock bars, comes with a set of Magura bar mounts but requires spacers to clear tanks on most Calis)
OK CLARIFICATION THANKS TO JEFF (former owner of parts lot)
http://www.protaper.com
Model CR-HI
Width 800mm - 31.5"
Height 95mm - 3.74"
Sweep 62mm - 2.4"
Comes with the Magura bar Mounts
http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Chaparral/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=044%2D0720474&gift=False&HSLB=False&mscssid=0E8239F85F54C4AED91982766697F632
Basically riser/clamp, bolts, washers.
Both bars and mounts new in box
As per Jeff
the bars are a ProTaper brand "CR High" bend - look at protapers website and look at the dimensions for the countour series CR High bend. The Universal box is from a black set I put on my bike. The color on those Pro Tapers is Platinum. The clamps are for a Kawasaki dirt bike as they use 10mm thru bolts like a Guzzi does. Husquvarna also uses 10mm thru bolts. All other dirt bikes use 12mm thru bolts. There should be a set of sleeves in with the risers that would let them be used on machines with 12mm thru bolts.....
Pic of bars and mounts
(http://www.xtupload.com/new/image-C179_4ACBB2A6.jpg) (http://www.xtupload.com/new/share-C179_4ACBB2A6.html)
Looks like my set-up woulda cost about the same - maybe $120-130 new - but I'll let it go for $80 plus shipping if you're interested.
I have these bars on my EV and love them. I'm 5'10" 220lbs, I'm not fat. My arms are regular in length.

I wound up solving the handlebar problem on my Vintage with Stone bars...much better! Here's a photo as it is today: Stone bars, Vetter Snap Vents, Advanced Brake Pedal, Sargent saddle, Givi top case, Rifle windshield, Renthal street grips, PIAA 35W Extreme-White spotlight bulbs, front mud flap (reduces rear tire flats), throttle lock, fused GPS power cord w/RAM mounts, Mistral crossover, and a GuzziTech 02 Optimizer.

very cool. So, referring to your original post on the thread, you said "version 2.0 will include..."
so is this bike 2.0, or are you thinking of another Jackal/california?
Love all the black and particularly the fenders. Fenders and rear lighting is the first thing I'm addressing on my Jackal. Just don't care for the stock taillight assembly at all. The saddlebags will hide what I consider an odd fender profile for now. Did the pictured bike get the lucas style light? I can make out that you've got a much different fender on there, is that the original, modified, or a replacement altogether? And for those that opt to modify the existing rear fender, does that lucas housing mount over the stock bracket or do dudes remove it?
The fact that the existing taillight assembly wasn't working properly pushed me to already spend some money in this vein, getting mini LED turn signals and an LED single taillight, but bobber style/"Ford" type, going to mess around with a modular light/plate mount and try to cover/incorporate the existing bracket, and have it look "stock". Opted to maintain chrome elements on my bike at this point, but still try to go with less of a bling factor. We shall see. Turns out the lighting issue was a minor one, and I probably could have survived with stock while considering my options for a while.
Thanks for posting! much appreciated.

very cool. So, referring to your original post on the thread, you said "version 2.0 will include..."

Yup, that was 2.0 (or 2.whatever it wound up before I sold it).
Here is a comparison of when I bought it and V2.0
(http://www.gigabikes.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10081/JackThenNow.jpg)
The front fender is a fiberglass repro from MGClassics:
http://www.motoguzziclassics.com/MGCParts2.asp
I don't currently see them on the website, but I think they order them in batches and might be convinced to order more.
If not, it's basically a fiberglass reproduction of the front fender used on some stock Cali models, I THINK the Bassa/Special Sport etc.
The rear fender was from a solidmount Sportster (something through 03) which was turned around backwards for a clean tail-light mounting surface. It required a little welding and clean up - including the Jackal mounting bracket tabs (under the seat) and patching what was now the front of the fender (which had the hole for the original Sportster tail-light).
I suspect you could mount that Lucas style light on a modified OEM fender too if you cut away the current bracket. But it would depend on the angle, and you'd have to trim the fender.
-
I modified my rear fender:
Had the holes welded up, did the body filling/painting myself. The older CEV replica tail light holder doesn't follow the curves of the Jackal fender well. In hindsight, I'd keep the shelf and design some sort of bracket to hold a custom tail light.

How did the HD fender look in a non-backwards mount?

How did the HD fender look in a non-backwards mount?
Very similar, it's relatively symmetrical. But you'd have a big hole and have to use the standard HD Sportster Tail-Light, or fill it in.

Really dig those National bags. Unbelievable how well they match the lines. I live 10 minutes from the factory, and contacted them about appropriate part numbers and mounts etc. The reply was, nope, don't make 'em for Guzzi's. Nope, no mounting racks. Nope, not interested in seeing them installed. Guy was nice enough, just didn't really have any info.
Clearly, several of you figured it out.
In hindsight, I'd keep the shelf and design some sort of bracket to hold a custom tail light.
This.
You did a great job on yours, but this is what I'll attempt. A hole or two is one thing. Not ready to start removing anything significant yet.
And cheers to a fellow granite stater. Can't wait to get this bike up there. Great roads for it.
-
She's gone now but here's what my Cal Special looked like before she got totaled.
Givi flyscreen. Guzzi backrest with HB bag racks (powder coated silver along with frame rail covers), Wilbers shocks, Hyper pro fork springs with cartridge emulators from Guzzitech, Dirt bike bars with Rox Risers, billet Bar end mirrors, ceramic coated head pipes, guzzitech x-over, mistral silencers, dyno mapped Power Commander, and a bunch of other little things added over the years. I do miss her.

The mounts I have are jackal specific. The passenger footpeg bracket is different on these than the Cali models, which requires a different leading support strut.
I've modified the upper rear mount. Originally the design mounted to the rear frame member. Using the factory package rack made this impossible. I cut the mount off and used some angle iron so now it mounts to the outside of the factory rack. Looks pretty slick.
The whole set up (racks, bags) is yours for $250 plus shipping if you want it. Send me a PM if interested.

:D
Yeah, I got bored and it was time to move on.
Not to mention Guzzi paid attention to my color/styling cues and were nice enough to make me a twin in a V7 Stone ;)
Sad part is poor fellow who bought it (he's a member here) was rear ended earlier this year and I think she went to the scrap yard. :(

Yup, I would think that would do nicely, though I'd double-check the dimensions despite what DG says is fitment.

Before mine was totaled on July 5th, 2013, roughly 9:30PM. Nah, I don't miss it. ;)
Even with the hydro now in the garage there was something special about the Jackal.

How many litres in that tank? The current 19ltr is not enough for my commuting

fab'd an alternate tailight/plate bracket. I like it. Leaves the stock fender bracket with it's posts in place. Can easily remount the original. Really don't understand the design of that light though. Just doesn't fit the bike at all in my view.
Slippery slope...I've got lots of ideas for this winter. We'll see what comes together.
Thoughts?

Appreciate the offer. this "28 light came all stainless. I've already coated it black (to match the headlight - chrome ring), it is LED, as are the side markers, and all soldered into a custom pigtail and in the bracket housing.
Trike sounds like a pretty cool project.

Good one. Almost a bobber!
-
I am only getting about 50% of the :PICS!: the rest is a big screen with a question mark. Any problem going on WG?
What makes a Jackal special.
One thing I noticed is the come looking almost like bobbers and as one example showed it was bobberish and yet others are beautiful in full dress.
But what else makes a JackaL special. Why only one disk. And do you get much by going dual up front?

Amazing how long a thread lasts on this site, and still has interesting new posts. Here is a National Cycle Street Shield EX which I like a lot. Their link:
http://www.nationalcycle.com/catalog/product/view/id/54/category/5391/
The "EX" is a little larger than the straight "Street Shield." It doesn't look huge but does get the wind and most bugs over my helmet. Hands are out in the breeze.
The site does not show this windshield for any Guzzi, as far as I could see but it was mounted when I bought the motor in 2012. One of the mounting points recently broke out and I found the shield is available without hardware for a significant saving. I down loaded a Kawasaki (it seems) installation guide since there are none specifically for Guzzi, and the whole assembly seems next door to universal. The lower mounts are attached to the upper forks with screw hose clamps, and the upper hardware attaches to the handlebars. Only non-universal thing to watch is to select a style which has clamps the same size as your handlebars!
The National Cycle agent with whom I spoke said the styles which attach to the headlight brackets, (F-15 & F-16 series), are more specific than the ones which mount like the Street Shield models, so it's doable.

Some beautiful bikes here. My Jackal has floorboards, outsider kit, no canister, h pipe, handle bar riser, Corbin solo seat, leading link from fork, National bags, and a Ural sidecar. There may be more that I'm forgetting.
I have a large clear windscreen that I really don't like, and am very interested in one of those sport or cafe screens for cooler weather.

Well, I'm a fan, but I'm the first to admit Radguzzi's skews the mean....his is near perfection.
FWIW, I've given up on the cafe fairing. Wasn't nuts about the cosmetics (I've seen them painted and they look great) but more importantly, I think it actually makes highway speeds worse. Throws all the air right across my Chest and shoulders more focused than with no fairing at all. Been on the search for an alternate to it and the barn door I've got.
I say do it.

I love the café fairing look but you're right, they do not do much for directing the wind off the upper body.
Believe it or not I rode that V11 across the country with that silly little screen... lol.
I have since picked up an H & H fairing that I have not yet installed. The design, based on the Swanee Aerofoil from years ago, works very well to move the air over the head and offers very good hand protection in cold or wet weather also.

But what else makes a JackaL special. Why only one disk. And do you get much by going dual up front?
Hi Red.
The Jackal came standard with one disc up front which I'm sure everyone will agree is adequate. Brembo brakes are the best standard brakes i've experienced.
The other california models were all a little heavier/and/or twin front discs were more desirable; more brakes for your bucks or deemed necessary for the heavier models.
I got mine with one disc on it, which stopped fine, but it was warped and there was an annoying shudder, pulling up slowly at the lights, so I got a cheap used caliper off a ducati and twin wave blade discs off ebay, which only cost about $150 USD. Now it stops scary fast.
The cheap chinese discs are fantastic. I considered putting a set on my Bellagio, purely for cosmetic reasons. (I was going to get red ones to go with the color scheme) ........... but the standard Brembo twin discs are so good, I don't want better brakes.
As the saying goes,........ "if it aint broke, don't fix it."
If you put an extra disc/caliper on your Jackal, beware. It WILL stop real quick. If you aren't concentrating, you might do stoppies, or lock it up and lose it. Be warned.
Good luck with your ride. Show us some pics.

I like them When Color Keyed particularly, and if it seemed a bit more effective I'd probably stick with it. May be that I've got a long narrow torso. Perhaps a more squat proportioned driver would find the draft going over their shoulders. I like the screen you show on your V11. We discussed this a bit, I think that is probably enough to block my chest. Was runnin' last night at 75mph with nothing at all. First time this year at highway speeds for any duration. Not terrible, but would get pretty tiring after a good while.
CaliJackal and Rad...did you guys replace your headlight buckets or just find eyelids for the existing bucket. Can't quite tell.
