Title: My Calvin FARTED, and blew the hose and or filter !!!!!!!
Post by: spridget on July 27, 2010, 05:58:10 PM
Well I've finally been able to ride after 2 carpal tunnel surgeries, left and right. So I need to get inspection, as 07 Calvin I got new last June only had less than 1k, and I was told " we replaced that "..........I thought I was safe......I leave the inspection station go 1/8 of a mile, STOP sign, let out clutch..........FAR T. Won't start, gas swirling in tank......OH NO the dreaded Calvin glitch. Well at least I wasn't in DEATH VALLEY when it happened. Road America came; after 3 HOURS, holy crap, I was in a major metro area, and brought me and the Calvin home.......when I called the inspection station and they said "what do you mean it's in the tank?" OOPS a Yamaha, Suzuki place; home seemed like the best action. My stupidity......I had the parts, the crimping tool, SAW ALL THE WARNINGS; so now here I go on the fix. Lesson learned..........li sten and then DO IT !!!!! At least the flat bed was covered............ .

i pulled my pump out of the calvin today to check if the hose was ok, it looks like it has the crimp clips on the pump and filter.
should the hose between the filter and the pump be the spiral molded type to stop it straining and poping off?

That "appears"  to have  been fixed with the proper hose and clamps.  It's the smooth rubber hose that's the culprit.  Is that hose still solid and clamps tight?

Yes, and that is the preferred metal filter, too. Looking good...,now good luck snaking that rascal back in the tank!

Geeze does that bring back memories:
"The Matrix"... any of them.
"Star Trek" episodes with The Borg
The drug induced alien birth scene in "Alien Resurrection".

Oh yeah, and pulling my own within the first 1,200 miles. Fun, that. Reinstall is like trying to figure out the old "ship in a bottle" scenario. My guess, Moto Guzzi employs Oompa Loompas. ".... but it came out so easily..." Cried whiningly.

Todd.

yep, been there done that, mine filed TWICE.

First time, it was 'fixed' by a professional. The second time, I fixed it myself. So far no problems.

And there is room for having the filter outside the tank on the frame.

In later years, they finally wised up. Yours looks like the good stuff to me.

Thats reassuring as the guzzi parts drawings show plain hose and convoluted hose for the same part number. (THANKS ALL)  ;-T
I stuck the pump back in after taking the photo, (painted the bare metal around the seal too  ???).

I will pull it again in 15000 miles to see if it is fine. i will post some pictures of the wires and connectors for anyone thinking of taking a look at their pump. perhaps they will do it if they know what to expect under the tank. I did not drain the tank I just held it in the wood vise on the workbench in an upright position when the fuel light had come on.

pump bolts and connections: (brake caliper nipple cover borrowed to seal the connector as it is a perfect fit)

tank side hole:

fuel pipe connector, tricky to get it to release: ::(

electrical connections, it is impossible to mix them up (1 male & 1 female), the tank vent is the small diameter pipe not connected to anything.
