Man, I've been going nuts trying to relocate a pic that I had saved a few years ago (then lost in a hard drive crash) of Guzzi valve covers with glass view ports installed. You probably wouldn't see much with oil flying around and all, but I thought it was a pretty neat idea!
Anybody here got it?

I sent them to a shop that preps HD parts for chrome. They polished them and then had 'em copper plated and then nickel plated. The covers were sent to another shop for gold plating. FWIW, there's gold on the inside too.

Must have cost you a zillion $$$ :o

Must have cost you a zillion $$$ :o
Actually, no. The prep on the valve covers and the alternator cover cost $250 and the gold on those parts as well as the 2 plastic chrome rear frame rail covers cost another $300. This was 11 years ago

A great idea. Yea, you might not see much when the engine is running (unless there's an oil flow problem, so you see too much), but it's still a novelty.

Thanks! If I remember right, I bought them from MG Cycle.

Just painted the lettering. Mask a square around the edge of the lettering, then spray black hi-temp paint inside the masked off area. Wait a minute or so, remove the tape and wipe the paint off the top of the cover with a soft cloth. The paint stays in the letters. Works great. The cover itself is hand polished once in a while.

Oh, the horror! Looks just like my buddy's Bassa after his barbecue grill got away from him. Took out his Shovelhead, entire garage and 40,000 rounds of ammo, too. (the fire department kept their distance) Also melted the back end off his fishing boat and his girlfriend's minivan. He now has a nice Calvin, new garage and a Road King. New girlfriend. too. Doesn't grill much anymore.

Well, Rick.. that's an oil leak on Rosie that I've been chasing for 2 freaking years. ;D You are looking at the front left. It's a true pin hole. A pin just will go through it. It only leaks when she's really hot..

Interesting, Chuck. I had a hard to find porosity on the right head of my cal II. it was at the base of the second fin , on the head near the plug area. I sealed with JB weld from the inside, it was the wall of one of the oil return channels. Problem solved. I always kept the top surface of the second fin wet with oil. you can imagine how many valve cover gaskets I replaced, until I found that! ;D
Rick.

I know Joe Kenny machined a few valve covers so the owner could install some sort of glass or plastic in the cover so you could
look down into them.
I'm fairly certain it was for the guy we use to call "Mr. V7" but I can't remember what state he's from either. He had a flock of
V7 Sports.

Why not have them de-chromed? Polish or sandblast to your liking. I did that to my G5 and they look great!

Removing chrome chemically means a long trip into the city and money.....There are local sandblasters....But perhaps someone here would like chrome covers...
-
Joe doesn't make head guards any more. He sold off his machines when he retired. The only items he has now are what's
left in his stock and I doubt any head guards are left.

Polished by hand, the only way to go ;D
Would U mind writing out a "How To?" Polish by hand would like to use that on my R60/6?

Some shiny bits arrived in the post today. My Guzzi rocker covers - I'm converting my V11 Sport to round heads (like the 70's stuff). But they were bare alloy -
1) I can't be bothered with polishing every six months, unlike some of you fetishists.
2) I could have painted them, but here high temp engine paint only comes in silver or black. And engine silver is on my square heads already and it's flaking off after a couple of years. Rubbish.
3) I could have powdercoated them - but nobody around here does high temp powdercoating. The usual pwodercoat softens at 100 Celcius, which may be OK but I didn't want to risk it.
4) I could have copper plated them, but plating to aluminium doesn't last very long. And if it flakes off on the inside of the cover after a few years it might bung my valves/oilways.
5) I could have anodised them, but plating to cast aluminium can give a blotchy affect, plus the grade of alloy would be whatever Luigi had in the scrap bin at the time.
So...pffft.
6) In the end they've been high temp baked finish, at high performance coatings. Good for 260 celcius so I figured that'd be way more than OK. Blasted, polished, undercoated with a shiny baked finish they normally apply to exhausts (!), and then they add a transluscent colour on the top. Result attached. Not cheap though - price is about 60 quid for both.(http://i578.photobucket.com/albums/ss223/smmudd83_1999/guzzi%20head%20finished_zpsamzjamao.jpg?t=1444257778)

Anyone else had trouble fitting new rocker covers due to holes not aligning? Hopefully this is just from a bad batch. Dealer is going to replace them.
