Title: Daytona
Post by: Daniel Kalal on November 05, 2011, 12:02:19 PM
I took this photograph in Lucca, Italy.  At this point in its life, the bike looked like it had been ridden very hard without much concern for it, but the builder did a nice job.  The combined tank and fairing is a very nice bit (if not very convenient).

My own is not far removed from stock.

Thanks to everyone who has posted pictures so far....let's keep them coming.

Guzzimike
For some reason I am unable to post pictures from my home computer but will post some from my shop computer if I go in tomorrow to finish up some work or Monday at the latest.

Paul
Your Daytona certainly qualifies as very special.  I have been following on your site for a number of years and enjoy seeing your ingenuity and craftsmanship.  Is the oil cooler adapter something you were able to purchase or something of your own design and manuafactur?

Again thanks to all and lets see  more.

flapjack,
you also spent quite some time on yours.
are those marvic wheels?
did you also make the fork angle steeper like paul?

most things I did are in the engine en gearbox.
new tappets
new valve guides, new valves
polished camshafts
new gearbox bearings
new horvath pump with steel gear
roper plate
drive shaft with grease nipples
94 hp at the rear wheel with the original 992 cc

Mine is just a pile of  bits at the moment but I have just bought a Daytona RS which was raced in Thunderbikes in the UK. Frame has been modified to same dimensions as the Raceco Daytona which was raced in the 1990s and a friend is building me a big bore motor.

Anyone know other sources of lighter wheels apart from PVM and OZ?

By the way,  I still have a complete red european fairing with frame, lamp and trimmings for a Daytona RS.  Looks like brand new.  Beautiful.

Anyone interested, please PM me soon.

I have the V sump that has the filter in front, I used an adapter that fits under the filter, part form the car shop. Oilcooler is v11 type.

Guzzirider,

This sounds like a great project.  Please keepus informed and post pictures as your project progresses.  Not a lot of choices for wheels, I believe Dymag is no longer in business.  Check Pauls site or contact him and he may be able to help.

I just had a friend drop off three copies of the '93 Daytona wiring diagram printed on 11" x 17" paper in full color, a size that you can really use to work from.  I only need one for myself, so the other two are available at no charge, first come first served.  Just  PM me with your address if you would like one of the two.  I will have to fold and crease it unless you want to stand the cost of a tube mailing (about $10)

Anyway - here's mine: (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b397/STERLL/Norsk_guzzi_traef/Daytona/langl_050.jpg)

One of the very first european 1992 models, which I bought from the former Danish Guzzi importer in 2007. Until then, then bike had never had license plates, and it had only done 10K miles. it's all original. I love it.

Merry X-mas to everyone

Looks like a beast, also found this other one, very similar, looks like same pipes. I'd love to get my hands on a good, original Daytona, but i've only ever found 5 Guzzis in this country, a couple of Dingo's, 750 Breva, 1100 Scura and my Imola.

He`s been building it for a few years now. I think it rocks. Thankfully both guys had the sense not to do the black wheel thing, which makes any bike except an orange KTM look like an old steel wheeled 60's Ford with no hubcaps. Can you imagine a Daytona with black wheels....ugly!

My first one, it was one of the first into the UK. Was a bit of a bus though on a tight road. I got the wheels changed to black, ugly in others eyes I don't really care, I got totally fed up with cleaning white wheels

The current work in progress getting completely stripped and cleaned, once I get a mate's rewire out of the way. I suppose not really a Daytona, but it's surely reasonably close

Thanks Dusty, I posted it once before earlier this winter when I first took it. I was searching older Daytona posts and wanted to post a picture in the "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" thread so I recycled it. The haze had a neat effect in the valley that morning.

This picture was taken at bike week in 1979. It's not a Moto Guzzi Daytona, it's a Moto Guzzi at Daytona

Yeah I know but although prettier and more powerful, I'll trade that for the good old reliability and simplicity of the pushrod 1100 mill thanks. My other bike has belts I can do without another.

I hear you there, if I did a Sfida project I think I'd use the Sport as it's base also. I just thought I'd interject the the 4V/Daytona Sfida link since it's a Daytona thread.

If by prettier you mean a blacked out motor etc. someone could always use a Sport 1100 Corsa as a Sfida donor.....

Hi BB

No you're quite right I'm the one going off topic.

When I say prettier to my eyes, the square block Daytona's have a purity of shape similar (although not as pretty as) the round fins. The square head LMs and 1100s look a bit more angular and not nearly as pretty, but its all personal taste.

I'm afraid I really dislike painted motors especially black ones, after a while it flakes and looks awful usually. I guess in areas of the US that can be less of an issue than for others. In the UK its a given.

Magni did a whole range of Daytona and 1100 variants including a Daytona engine into the old style Sfida using his version of the Tonti frame. He then did his version of the spiney's finishing with the Australia.

This particular bike is (more or less) how Magni made it. I don't think many of them exist period. Probably 2 or 3 hundred and most of them I'll bet are in Japan (where most of his bikes ended up, the Japanese have excellent taste). Compared with a Daytona the seat height is amazingly low, which suits my short arse, makes you feel more like you have more control. With the Daytona I always felt I was wobbling along on the top of it.

My `87 LM IV was like that after I put a 130 /70-18 rear tire on it w/a 16" front 110/90 tire.  It felt like you were in it instead of on it.  8)   The handling was a little weird in certain conditions 'cause I found out later the rear tire was made for a wider rim width, but otherwise it sure felt good.
