Title: In Praise of the Moderators
Post by: Michael D on August 03, 2012, 11:35:41 AM

A big thanks and appreciation for monitoring the upcoming rallies, campouts, breakfast rides and lunch rides and posting them as a sticky on the front page.   ;-T

I agree...a great addition to an already great group of moderators.

Yes, lads, but the true test is to come, soon enough:  somewhere, soonish, there will be an election of something or somebody.
I ain't sayin' it's political; I ain't sayin' it's not.
It will, however, be a true test of us all -- and certainly of our New Moderator -- to keep the next 100 days from getting contentious on WG.
We can do it, if we choose.  If we really appreciate Rocker59's stepping in as a WG Moderator, we'll choose wisely.

... just sayin' . . .  ;)

And in the meantime, keep your thumbs away from R59 - "they don't like it up 'em" applies especially to Moderators .....

Thanks guys.

On the stickys, I've visited with Luap and here's what we're going to try and do:

Breakfast/Lunch/Day Rides, we'll sticky them about a week out.

Rallies/Campouts, we'll sticky them two to three weeks out.

They'll be dropped off sticky the day the event starts.

We want them at the top, for people to see, but Luap also doesn't want most of the 1st page cluttered with stickys.

For those of you with events, please email me about it.  I'll try to catch them, but it's easy to miss a post with all the activity we have.

Election time and Winter?

I'm sure Chett will be done with the harvest and will help us weed out the contraband postings...   ;-T

There's no telling how much blood is on the floor and bodies stacked in the basement from some bull-goose Moderating that we didn't really see.   At least ONE poster's posts ALL disappeared one night (whether from fear of R59's pistols or by R59 himself), and several others have gone very quiet .....

I think he's doing a good job ....

Someone started a thread the other day, the topic of which was something like this...

I got PM'd by the Mod b/c I said I didn't like how someone's bike looks & the owner complained (to the Mod), yet THAT person has made remarks about others bikes in the past...

I think the thread got one response if that before it was gone.

On one hand,  :wife: to the mod that pulled it so early as it promised to be very entertaining.

On the other hand,  :+=copcar good call on the preemptive strike.

Now a PERFECT place for the moderator to jump in would be over on the thread about getting johnr's EV back up and running.   Thread's been running for more than a year, everything on there is helpful and good, best wishes for people's health, arranging for flights across the Pacific to help a fellow Guzzist, almost there ....

....then some burke who shall remain nameless but whose initials are crc jumps in with a bunch of worthless, insulting, self-serving crap designed to make HIMSELF feel better and try to scupper the project if he can ... because HIS precious self wasn't involved with the project.

R59 ought to burn one virtual hollow-point on that one .....

I was the one that complained to the moderator, not the "owner."  The personal attacks in that thread were inappropriate.  They were not aimed at me, but I have witnessed the loss of valuable members in situations like this and I did not want to lose another.  I sent a PM to Mike and he did his job.  End of story.

I've been thinking about debates (vs arguments) and how awareness of debate rules could make "off topic" discussion more useful and educational.

After imaging how difficult it would be to actually do such a thing here, I feel moved to say thank you to the folks who take the time to keep this board on track. I couldn't do it.

So thank you!

It has to do with anonymity.  People behave differently when sitting at a computer from the way they would in person.  Driving cars is a another good example.  If a person cutting you off in traffic did that kind of thing in person, it would be like if you were walking toward the door at the grocery store and some guy jumped in front of you right before the door, forcing you to slow your walking, went in, and let the door slam in your face.  The unmoderated boards I've had experience with don't take long to degenerate into a few troublemakers in control, and most others leaving.  I appreciate that this board is well run.

So true...  Thanks for keeping this place tidy, Mods!

One look at the Illuminati Guzzi forum; where even the Mods are nut-jobs spouting off about all sorts nonsense that has nothing to do with MG, proved to me that this is the far better forum!

I do enjoy a lot of the NGC threads... but appreciate the work the mods do to keep discussions sane.

This is so true. I have a board for my Vintage racing series and I make everyone use their mother given name. There is no anonymity. There is also no BS or name calling or ridiculous arguments about irrelevant things because everyone knows who you are and what you said.

The other side of that coin, is it's is a very boring board as people generally only swap tech, or bikes / parts for sale etc. The most exciting post was a legitimate bitch about people jumping starts.

If I want to read arguments and insults, I always come here.

In theory this is true. In practice it has been proven for tens of thousands of years that it does not work that way. So, instead of charging at windmills, I guess it is more productive to live with reality and deal with it accordingly.

1. No un-justified personal or dealer attacks. 2. Keep the content Guzzi related. No room for Politics or Religion debates here. 3. There is no room for "raunchy" posts. 4. Posting of for sale items allowed only in the classified section. Failure to adhere to these simple, common courtesy, common sense rules will result in your being banned to ever post on the Moto Guzzi Discussion site again. That being said, Enjoy the Guzzi talk. The NGC threads will fade soon: http://days.to/spring/2015   ;D

Of course, then the Southern Hemis will start their "off topic" threads to get them through The Long Dark.

For most of us, the snow -- 6 - 10 inches ahead here today -- and cold and salt and cinders, etc., make wildguzzi a respite from reality.

The discussion of what concerns us is part of what makes us a community.  We we're initially brought together through our love of Moto Guzzis, but we have morphed into more.  When one of us reaches out to the members of this forum for advice, Guzzi related or otherwise, we should be flattered.  I view the forum kinda like a good gumbo, a variety of ingredients and the Guzzi content as the rich sauce.  You never know what's in the next bite.

One thing though,  I wish you.Northern boys would quit complaining  about the weather.  ~;

Guilty.  A couple of NGC threads I've started or contributed to have to do with dogs, health, family, guns and maybe trucks or bridges.

I've had an '86 LM IV since new, have had a Cal III Touring and Monza, then a few other brands.  The LM has been my only motorcycle for about five years now and being pretty well sorted, there isn't a whole lot to discuss about it that hasn't been said several times.

Are there other places to go and post about interests, look for help or share what's going on with us on the web?  Of course.  Could be a matter of most of us having several interests, or needing a NGC question answered and knowing that there's a wide range of experience and interests here and who better to ask than forum buddies?  It could be a matter of some convenience too.

I'd miss the photo threads that aren't Guzzi related, as I would hate to see posts about a member's health or need or general question banned.  If all I posted about was my LM IV, it would (has) become stale and redundant quickly.

Firearms, religion, politics?  Hot button topics, sure.  The mods do a very good job permitting some lattitude, especially since this is a one-room house.

Now, about my LeMans IV, it's red, benefited from flywheel lightening and headwork, runs like a freight train, and since buying a Corbin saddle from a forum member, no longer eats my a** on 600 mile days.  It could do with a new clutch, and having the valve guides K-lined, but our dog's passing and now my mother's very poor health has taken priority over winter wrenching.

Four inches of snow on the ground in Memphis today.  No Guzzi riding till this clears.

Tobit.

 :bow to the moderators

and also to the community here. There's a good balance of entertaining topics with solid motorcycling content. The mods only seem to have to step in occasionally, as many conflicts have been self-correcting. I've learned to ignore topics that don't interest me.

I was an Adv member for many years, that forum morphed from a tight knit BWM focused community to a forum rife with commercialism, dodgy commercialism (some of it by the moderators), heavy handed moderation (I was nearly banned for participating in a discussion about Wyzenbeek fabric testing), piracy (flogging stolen service manuals), trolls, and flame wars.

And I've moderated internet groups and forums, it's a thankless task....bravo for our moderators!!!

Great board, great moderators.  We strike a happy balance here with the "around the camp fire discussion idea."  Oil, tires, points vs electronic ignition, etc..., this all gets old quickly.  Now, what kind of new washer or truck to buy, do you have your personal affairs in order?, check out my dogs, etc..., I like that kind of stuff.  Gives me a glimpse into the personal lives of the many and varied folks on this board.  The NGC really keeps things interesting around here, especially with 2 feet of snow still on the ground.

Thanks everybody.

I've just combined a few similar threads into one.

Most of you know that Luap and I are the two active moderators, Luap being our administrator.  Chet is our other administrator, but he has had some family distractions that have kept him busy over the past couple years, and he has been unable to be as active on the forum.

Luap and I both spend a lot more time than you might imagine here on WildGuzzi, trying to ensure that it's a good Guzzi community forum.

Even then, we do miss some things.  No way to read every post in every thread, so we thank those who send us messages about things we should look at.

I've been fortunate enough over the past 2.5 years to have the time to offer as a moderator, and have been glad to do it.  This forum has been a great benefit to me over the past dozen years, and it's just one little way I can help pay it forward.

I, too, am looking forward to the seasonal change in posts that will be coming in the next few weeks, as the campout/rally season kicks off down South.

Nothing like ride reports and photos to help keep the Guzzi fire burning.

:P  Personally, I think that there is a lack of reading comprehension and focus.  ;D

A thread about the forum is not NGC because it's about the operation of the forum.  In other words in priority it's #1.  #2 would be Guzzi related then #3 would be NGC.  The problem is that the forum is for "Guzzi talk".  NGC is allowed but should be marked NGC.  The slackers should mark it properly.  Sales of Guzzi stuff should go on the Classifieds.   ;-T

Sales of Guzzi stuff should go on the Classifieds.   ;-T

what?   huh.  uh.

Someone moved my "General Discussion" subject post into this thread and it wasn't me.
All I meant in my post was a light hearted jab at all the non-guzzi posts and a mild slam at the moderators for not lightly sort of push to sort of keep things at least a little more motorcycle related and someone merged into "In Praise of the Moderators" ................... ....

2. Keep the content Guzzi related.

Can't think of any bike much more "related" to a Goose than a Beemer  ;-T

Yeah.  John, it was all in fun, based on the responses your thread recieved.

We are in the last weeks of winter, and the NGC count is high.

Soon, the front page will be filled with threads about campouts.

I also thank Vasco, Chuck, Pressure ,Kev, and all the others who have posted photo essays of some of their projects. They have raised the intellectual quality of this forum. There are others working on things but have not been able to take the time to post. I appreciate the time it takes to post such things and I hope to do the same once I start working on Guzzi's again. I'm in a stand down mode while I get some other stuff done.

I would be greatly disappointed if the forum had to stay MG bikes only subjects. It would be a waste not to be able to use the collective knowledge and wisdom found in this forum for other needs. For example when I first posted a couple of years ago about finding out I may be pre-diabetic many here gave me great information and encouragement which really did help both for the knowledge and the motivation to help myself.

I don't like the hateful or gratuitously off-color stuff, but I enjoy the diverse aspects that give this forum a "personality". Understanding a little more about each other gives this cyber space more humanity and shape. There are many among you that I think I would like to meet in time, but for now it is enjoyable to just find out what things we have in common. This is how a specific global community can fit into an observable location...and it's why I keep coming back daily.
