A new style of electric quadcopter is now for sale and it is the first to use full collective pitch on each rotor ... very impressive platform. I can also see big improvements with the use of gps and formation flying software soon.

Also I like to hear what could be the other potential uses of the technology (for good or bad) by professionals... film production, rescue, survellance and ?

At exhibitions, many people would watch a novel moving 3 d light display made up of a swarm of drone copters - good advertising gimmick!

The guys doing the formation flying work are genius at computer intelligence too. The little things learn as they go as well as following some strict guidelines.
Quad copters are pretty cool. You can get them in all forms, easy to fly, full computer control, fly through a video feed (like being a pilot in the copter), or full aerobatic mode. From $200 to tens of thousands dollars. Palm size to the size of a small car.
You can get kits to build one yourself or get them ready to charge and fly.
Am not really sure what the full collective does for the 'normal' fliers, but, the extreme aerobatic guys will love them.

A few of these made to trim shrubs and hedges would be a sure- seller! Wouldnt need a ladder or a spotter to guide your work - just a couple of cameras and a computer to plot the progress.

Actually, electric helos make very little sense for use a drones. Why?
Limited flight time, noise giving away their presence, range, etc. etc. etc.

Kansas State University was one of the first schools to offers degrees in drone tech. Toured the program, very cool and at the same time sort of scary. They claim grads of the program if will to relocate or go out of country can start out in the 120K+ range of salaries. Their program is located in Salina, KS which west of town has a huge military bombing and gunnery range. That is where they have been flying. Recently they just got cleared for state wide use. There will be a lot of agricultural applications and that is one of the areas they will be concentrating on.

I just got approved by our board to include the purchase of a UAV to monitor our ag fields and conservation practices. Thanks for the link, maybe I can increase the budget for that guy!

Designs won't advance much again until batteries become better.
Electric UAV's are cool, but, have limited flight times and legally you need FAA approval to fly beyond your line of sight. Then you get into airspace restrictions and such.
There are also more and more places posting 'no fly' zones for drones.

I agree, its funny because I did a benefit/cost analysis and actually recommended to the board that we wait until technology (specifically batteries) and regulations (specifically two person reqm't) change, but our board was unfazed and wanted to move forward for the next year. In the end, I think they made a good decision since I do think that the regs will be changed and I believe that battery advancements will happen sooner than later. In the meantime I get to add another notch on my resume once I start flying.

FAA is not law.
As far as I know no one has been convicted under FAA; notwithstanding any civil suits of which I have no knowledge.
The weight limit is actually 55lbs. The FAA can levy fines.

Guy was flying a drone around the university of Virginia. It went to court.

Let me clarify a bit. What I wrote was the new proposed rules that will probably happen. I took what I wrote directly from the FAA site.

The FAA just posted new rules this year for the flying of drones.
Won't be much of a problem until someone gets killed by one. It will probably happen sooner rather than later with the number of them that are out there.

Even Yamaha has been working on a gas powered 2 cylinder copter for agricultural and industrial use .....

Adding collective to the quad, is a big leap! I'm thinking more stuff for the computer to stabilize while the pilot trys to keep up.

Here is a link to the video shot during our big 4 day rocket launch at Argonia, Ks. We launch everything from small Estes to giant 20 foot tall amateur rockets. With a 50,000 foot waiver, we often have rockets use up every bit of it.
This particular drone aircraft was about the size of a box for boots, was super quiet, and shot really good video. Video is our pasture area during rocket set-ups and launches.

I don't understand this kind of response. its a toy, i have one, it is fun for me and my nephews to play with, it does not have a camera. the government can look into your backyard and count your pubes while you are sunbathing with its many satellites, the cameras on most of the toy quad copters i have seen you would be lucky to tell if its a person or a tree.
Its a toy. no one cares what is going on in your backyard, if you see one of these in the air it is people playing with a toy. you can put a camera on a kite, going to shoot all the kites down next?
Or is it that people are having fun that is the bad part here?

Major concern on my part is when any number of these "piloted" by the unregulated untrained general populace is sharing the/my airspace with real aircraft containing real souls on board - bad things gonna happen!

For one thing, my house is 3/4 of a mile from my nearest cleared property line. Someone "having fun" with a drone who has it flying within shotgun range of my house has screwed up badly already. But not to worry; it's just a toy, I won't be doing any real damage when I pop it!
Secondly, sometimes people DO care about what is going on in my backyard. And NONE of those people (if there are any) are up to any good.
People can have all the "fun" they want, whether it be with their 4-wheelers or their pistols or their parties or whatever. They just need to have a little consideration for their neighbors, and there are MANY who don't .....

Don't YOU worry (unless you're flying it) ... my dog will let me know. Four buzzing propellors can't be quieted down but so much. And I hear about all this secret squirrel government satellite stuff covering every square inch of the earth and letting people know about every step ... and I hear about it .... hear about it ..... hear about it ..... While entire airliners disappear from the face of the earth ... criminals on the run stay out of law enforcement sight for years ... Osama bin Laden picking and grinning for 10 years after 9/11 ... what, hasn't he got any pubic hairs for the super satellite to find?
But I'm only SO paranoid .... so that's a ways down on the list of my First World worries! ;-T

Here in Hawaii, some times ground travel is very difficult due to jungle or lava conditions.
Some smart wag got rescue organizations to start using drones in searches for lost people.

Yea, just search Kloudbusters and you will find all kinds of video. Simple to on board. Wish I knew the machine he used to make the video.
The one with the black smoke that kind of leaves a curved path, did some loops, or as we call it, sky writing.
