Exhausts considering. Want a more aggressive sound but not LOUD. Thoughts?

I have the Zard on my 13 Stelvio. Sounds good ( to me). Mine doesn't have the disclaimer for off-road or race use only, but a friend installed one with the disclaimer and it is definitely louder.

I have a Mistral that was fitted to the bike when purchased so I cannot comment on performance etc. I think it gives the bike a nice sound without being obnoxious.

I've only experienced the Mistral. I found it to be slightly louder than stock with the DB reducer in place and obnoxious without. Nice mellow rumble and MUCH lighter than stock. I have a round aluminum mistral that I will sell for $250.00. Less than half the price new and it only has been used for 3-4 K mi.

Mistral all the way. ;-T I have one on my Stelvio and a pair on my V7. Great sound but not too loud.

Mistral carbon oval here. DB killer in (w/slight mod). Love the sound.
Had a Mistral on my Breva also...it actually required no db-killer and wasn't loud in the slightest. Perfect tone and volume.
I almost went with the Quat-D because it came with a db-killer and a catalyst biscuit thingy.

Leafman60 has tried a couple/few aftermarket mufflers on his NTX, he'd be a good one to ask. I think he just sold his GPR because it was too loud.

Now now now, I didn't say the GPR was too loud.
With a baffle installed it's not bad. If you order a GPR, be sure it comes with a baffle. I had to order one separately and it was expensive that way.
The GPR and others look good. However, their smallish diameter body means that they contain less packing inside and less of a chamber to deaden sound. You will be re-packing those a little more often (which is not a big deal).
I am currently using the MIVV. It is a larger-size can that holds more packing and probably produces a deeper sound because of the length and diameter of its size. I did have a slight initial problem with my MIVV but the factory replaced it. The internal core weld came loose.
I like the MIVV.
The finest quality aftermarket exhaust I've ever used is the Akrapovic but they do not yet produce anything for the Stelvio. Staintune is also very good quality.
If you want an MIVV, I highly recommend some good folks up in Tennessee close to Deal's Gap that rep MIVV here in the US.

PYoung, you need an aftermarket muffler too. They are substantially lighter in weight than the stock behemoth.

The mistral does sound good but Steve at Beemers and More in Ft Collins showed us the Dyno run from that manufacturer and it showed a 7 hp decrease over the stock silencer. Not restrictive enough for the 8v.
The Zard from Guzzitech is the right volume.

Any of these exhausts (with the Db silencer in place) require ecu remapping?

No, none of them will destroy your engine in the short term but without a dB killer and if the airbox has been screwed with performance will be adversely affected and to rectify that situation you need to alter at the very least the fueling but ideally address all the mapping issues.

Well, I originally installed an Agostini exhaust. I took it for less than a mile ride and the sound was very close to stock. I took out the DB killer and way too loud. So now is posted on eBay for sale if interested. Have installed the GPR exhaust and is perfect, nice pphhhhrrraaapp sound when cracking open the throttle but once underway, fairly quiet, and ½ the cost of the Agostini but suspiciously they look very similar in construction. Maybe same shop for both out of China I would assume.

I had a GPR on another motorcycle and found it to be too loud for my taste. Incidentally, GPR is an Italian company. I bought mine off ebay and it turned out to be coming direct from the factory. As I recall, they sent it air freight and it was at my door in 4 business days...free shipping! The quality was first class. When I asked about the type and thickness of stainless being used I found it to be the same as the much more expensive brands. I suspect the great cost/benefit ratio is due to dealing direct with the factory in Italy.

Maybe the GPR for the Stelvio has been designed differently because unless you are really on the throttle, not just a little but on it, with the DB in I find very little difference in sound. However, the weight savings has to be 15lbs plus. I have also added a PCM/AT and ECU reflash to run much cooler and not lean, as it does stock in the mid range.
Agree about the stainless, is top shelf for the GPR and can find no quality differences between the Agostini and the GPR, just preferences in looks.

I had a Mistral Carbon on mine. Tried a few different maps. MPG dropped 5-7, and it always smelled like it was running rich. I asked the dealer to put original map back on the ECU and installed the factory pipe back. I am a happy camper now.

Doesn't the Staintune have a built in baffle (typical of OEM) that does not require repacking?
I believe that's the case in general isn't it?
Because of that, they weigh more than the typical alternatives since they drop weight be using packing vs mechanical baffles - I believe that's the case?
The reason why I bring that up is: its good to know what you are purchasing. If you don't mind repacking then great.
Does any of the options have a built in CAT? Personally I'd like to stick with a CAT and tread lighter on mother earth now-a-days..

Most of the aftermarket cans for any of the 8V's will work OK, the O2 sensor will tell the ECU to trim down the fuel to suit and I've yet to see a pipe alone that will push the system into 'Unacceptable' mode and throw up a service warning. Add in a stupid airbox lid or a rock strainer air filter and all bets are off.
If you want it to run richer? Just turn the lambda off. It'll be too rich then probably and that's a bit of an issue. Given the damage to the Stelvio I have in my workshop at the moment from over-fuelling its something I would strongly recommend you try and avoid.

So my question is: Does any after market vendor provide a slip-on with mechanical baffling and a CAT?

Not certain but I'm pretty sure several of them, (Mistral rings a bell.) have the option of a Cat-Con and almost universally they are available with a removable dB killer. Some of the dB killers seem to have been designed with a bit more thought than others.

I recently received an inquiry about how I like my MIVV muffler on my 2012 Stelvio NTX.
My email response-
I like the MIVV muffler. I had tried a GPR but I find the MIVV sounds better.
When you install the MIVV, I suggest coating the inside of the carbon fiber body clamp with RTV silicone and letting it cure before installing the strap so it will help grab the muffler and keep it from slipping back and forth. MIVV provides some adhesive friction bumps for this purpose but they are not adequate. Don't glue the strap to the muffler. Also be sure to tighten the header pipe clamp, maybe even install a spring, to keep your muffler from vibrating and slipping out of the joint. Over time, this can be an issue.
I used my baffle in the muffler for a while but I now am running the MIVV without the baffle and I don’t find it too loud. I like the sound. The length of the body and the adequate packing causes it to produce a deep tone.
My first MIVV developed a problem where the internal perforated core broke loose from its welding.I returned it to my seller (http://www.pjsparts.com/)and they got me a replacement under warranty from the MIVV factory.Everything is working well for several thousand miles now.
Regarding fuel mapping- I suggest you try what you have and see how it works.There are many experts out there who may not be totally correct for everybody in their assertions. If you continue to have problems, I can send you a map that I obtained from a Canadian friend that works best for me. I am also running a free-flow air filter.
One suggestion-Pay attention to your spark plugs.I experienced a slight stutter for a long time that nobody could diagnose.Turns out that my problem was one of my spark plugs! I am currently using the Denso Iridium plugs with great results. I would change them out every 6-12k miles.
Once you do all of this, your bike may be like mine and run like an energetic ape.Be aware, however, that your fuel consumption may increase.There is a cost for everything.

I have a Mistral on the Griso. I like the sound (no DB killer), but had to mess with the map to get rid of over run pop.
I would go with a Stelvio Mistral in a second, and I would be messing with the map in Guzzidiag. Holding off for now, but thinking about it later.

Stock sound seems okay from driver's seat. Guess I'll havta take a listen from the sidewalk. Can't argue with any weight savings tho...
