Arturo Magni (mahnee) was, I believe, chief mechanic at MV Agusta. He is primarily known for his work at MV. After leaving MV he made a series of Guzzi based specials: The Sfida(?) the Australia etc. I believe his last bike was based on a Suzuki Bandit. Others can probably fill in more details. He passed away but his son still operates in Italy. www.magni.it

Always wanted a Magni Australia, which is the model you pictured Jas67.
Daytona engine. Magni frame/swingarm.

I thought that the rocker covers looked like it might be a Daytona engine.
Also, looking at the swing arm, it looks like they made their own paralever-like swing arm.

a mate of mine imports used ones from japan but theyre hard to come by. giovani is magnis son that now runs the business, seem to be a waste of time emailing him though as he never replies, maybe he doesn't know English. they did at one stage make bell helicopters under licence, not sure if they still do. the first one my mate imported was a 97 sfida 1100i, with moderate crash damage to the front. I considered buying it a few time but speeds not my thing anymore as far as I know he still has that one for sale, and also a hotted up Australia forsale. I havnt talked to him for awhile though. if you want to own a magni guzzi you've got to be prepared to get the gorse out of youre pockets because they don't sell cheap

Yeah. Magni is pretty famous for the parallelogramo rear suspension. Available as an accessory to fit the Tonti LeMans

Magni owns the patent on this style of swingarm. It was used on a Kawasaki and still used on Moto Guzzi and BMW. Although in a different looking package. The idea is to let the tire move up and down rather than rotate around the swing arm piviot point. Along with preventing the rear tire from trying to drive under the bike when accelerating.

Sorta like my old '52 plunger frame BSA B33 500cc single. Yeah, that bike could sure handle!

Arturo is still around, in fact; he celebrated his 89th birthday this year. Both father and son understand English - Giovanni posts occasionally on the Magni enthusiasts website.
I don't believe the Magnis ever had anything to do with helicopter manufacture; instead, it was MV Agusta that manufactured (Bell) Agustas. When the MV Agusta motorcycle factory closed in 1979, the parent company continued in the aviation business. Aviation was always, and still appears to be (with Agusta Westland) their primary focus. The modern-day 'MV Agusta' motorcycle company has no connection whatever with the Agusta family. Modern day 'MVs' are in fact Cagivas. The badge they wear claiming '37 times champions of the world' is ludicrous!
I now have one of these Magni Australias (see pic). It's currently undergoing a rebuild, but will be roadworthy again early in the new year. I'll post a link to some on-board video when I'm able.

Magni Sfida is a lovely looking bike. Remember drooling over one as a youth in the bike shop window. Anyone in the UK got one for sale?

Here's one that hangs out in Phoenix, AZ. I assume it's still there, I'm not.

weevee sorry youre right, it was augusta tied up with bell helicopters
-
Weevee is spot on and Giovanni does answer mail, but you gotta keep trying as he can sometimes be a bit hit and miss. It does help if he gets to know you (even in the virtual sense).
His attitude is frustrating and baffling to a lot of US guys given the US attitude to customer service, the Italians attitude is entirely different. The guy has more business than he can handle, is perpetually swamped with business, so rather than kill himself, he prioritizes and I don't blame him, even when its my mails that occasionally get ignored.
Price of his bikes demands pretty deep pockets, but his machines are works of art, personally I think he builds the best looking bikes on the planet bar none. His spares prices are very reasonable though and he does his VERY best to help keep his bikes no matter the age on the road............... ..I really really rate the whole family and nice people to deal with when they reply ;D
I have no clue, if there is any relationship or connection on the aviation thing but there is a company called Magni who make Autogyros

I have a Sfida, story of a restore on it here
http://www.vintagemotorcyclesonline.com/features/stories/184--sfida-italian-for-challenge- (http://www.vintagemotorcyclesonline.com/features/stories/184--sfida-italian-for-challenge-)
I am restoring (some would say butchering) another Sfida 1100, below is photo of it when I got it, unfortunately the photos flatter to deceive as to the condition

Wish I could afford more, but I cannot however, I will gladly help anybody with one as even just working on these machines is (to me) a serious joy
John
ps Weevee you have some beautiful machinery sir I seen some video of the MV too & now an Oz, you're turning me shades of green

Looks like you're cornering the UK market when it comes to Sfidas, John! That's a very original-looking 1100. Good luck with its ongoing restoration.
I've just read the story of your previous rebuild, and you certainly did the bike justice. Great job. My own bike is slowly coming together - although it hasn't been so much a restoration as a refurbishment. I found no real 'nasties' in the strip-down, so my task was simplified. I've simply replaced head-bearings/cam-belts etc., serviced the engine and greased the pivots/chassis-bearings where needed. I bought this bike unseen, and have been surprised to discover the number of upgrades it possesses; I suspect it's been tuned to 'C' kit spec. already (although I've yet to inspect the cam-shafts to be sure). It does wear the 'C' kit chip, the less-restrictive exhaust (not seen in pic.) and a deeper, higher-capacity sump mated with an oil-cooler and fairing-mounted temperature gauge. Believe it or not, though, I haven't ridden it yet :o I'm sure it will be an experience!
As to the MV: I sold it a couple of months ago, having become disillusioned with the way in which Cagiva have cheapened what was once possibly the most illustrious of marques. It sold for an ungodly sum, so my swelling bank account handled my hurt. ;-T Check out my showcase ad: http://steve614sold.wix.com/mv-agusta-for-sale

I raced one at Daytona in 2000 for the US importer. I took fifth, and my trophy hangs on the office wall of Giovanni.

a few years ago I sent Giovanni an email and I said I wanted a set of magnesium wheels for my vintage guzzi. I mentioned he had my trophy on his wall, and sent that picture. He responded very positively (like I was family), offering a substantial discount (but still a ton of money), but... But he sent a set of engineering drawings of their wheels (all in italian), and told me to fill in the numbers. Great (sarcasm), I'd like to be able to say, make me a set to fit a 1978 Lemans, then the fitment would be on them. If I provide them the numbers and I get it wrong, I'm screwed. I have never pulled the trigger on that deal, as much as I'd love a set of these 6 spoke wheels for my Eldorado/automatic. I think I'd even go for the rear wheel with no cush drive to make it even lighter. The automatic's fluid drive and lack of shifting providing low stress on the spline and u-joint.

The bike is still here. Glenn even rode it Datil New Mexico for the August rally. Funny story, one of the guys he rode with was on a new model Royal Enfield. The Enfield made the entire trip, loosing the speedo in the rain - again, while Glenn had a battery connection problem and needed some help. He recently bought a KTM 390 (?) Duke and is totally seduced by that bike.
-
Glenn's bike gets ridden. Magnificent! But, not for the average build, requires short legs and loooong arms. The sound is off the charts.
-
Glenn is not your average rider either. He tours on machines (like the Magni) that I'd have a hard time just taking to the monthly breakfast.

I know of three in NZ. Magnificent. And a joy to behold.

The place to see Magnis is Japan, they seem to have loads there, its his main country of export. If you look at any Japanese Guzzi meet you'll see a real disprortionate number of Magnis and all in beautiful condition
Re my 1000, it get's ridden, not all the time I admit and only in the summer but its not a garage queen (in fact it lives in a shed)

Did you take this video? Looks like great fun.
The engine makes the best music, no need to add a soundtrack. I don't think this BB supports embedding of video.
-
Dan yeah all my own work, not that good, with Action cams its point and pray regarding the image.
2 Go Pros, one on a chest cam but angled too far down unfortunately, its really hard to tell what the correct angle is. One GoPro on the bar end pointing at me, the other barend had the Contour facing backward. Once they are mounted and you've ridden about a mile you forget all about them.
Since then I got proper mics and a recording device so I'll throw them into the rucksack and hopefully do better.
I knew I'd get criticism for the music (I'm not taking it the wrong way and its justified). The problem is the Contour mic is useless only wind roar, the chest cam was a similar story and the remaining Go Pro on the bar was busy recoding a squeak from the mount, so I had to do a lot post editing with Lo pass filters just to get any motor sound at all................ ................... .....I promise I'll improve
Thanks for the kind words I never intended to show that video (I have another I did the same day). I record video for me to recall the moment during the long dreary days of a Scottish winter but I thought what the hell maybe one or 2 might like to see it

Yep. lol. My old plunger frame A10 was fitted with those old Avon block pattern tires too. The treads would add to the fun by sort of 'walking'. Combined with low hanging mufflers this all made cornering an entertaining adventure.
There is at least one Magni Australia in Invercargill.
-
John n, i woldn't make a big deal from production. If you use a wide angle lens, which most action cams use, and point straight you'll get a good view of the road. Wind noise is near impossible to eliminate but can be reduced if you place the cam/mic behind a windscreen. I place my cam inside the helmet. A piece of foam or cotton can also buffer wind noise.
see here examples of great low fi videos.
http://youtu.be/l9giKQBuSEU
http://youtu.be/Qw9dpqdYdc4
Anyway , thanks for sharing
-
Dan thanks, constructive advice is always welcome.
I've had good results by placing a mic in my rucksack before although it can be bit hit and miss. The new mics are pretty big and not really intended for use with an action cam but all the kit would comfortably go inside that Kreiga sack that I'm wearing in the video. I'll see when next summer comes around.
That first video you posted is pretty dammed good, I think his tacho cable needs rerouting or the tacho needs new magnets :) and what was with that mobile road block near the end? I got a bit of a fright the way guys negotiated it
If you can stand the music or want to see more here is the first video, its really just more of the same and I don't want to bore, but just in case

Just a point that may interest some on Magni and MV helicopters
I read an older article that was reprinted and stated that Carlo, Arturo's other son (Giovanni is the mainstay on the M/C side) is now participating in the business, after a career with MV helicopters and still did/does consulting work for them.
So there was a connection after all, whether accidental or not it had some basis in truth
I'll get ma anorak
-
Dan yeah all my own work, not that good, with Action cams its point and pray regarding the image.
there is an app for your iphone so you can see what angle the camera is pointing while shooting..
I don't mind the music ! I've had the same problem with wind noise and use music to mask it too..
-
Thanks Fotoguzzi
Me and cells just don't get on, but it's tempting when you can now do so much with them.
I eventually got an LCD back, the later type that has a touch screen so setting up the GoPro is easier. I use that to frame the shot on the cameras I'm using then just turn them on or off now.
Haven't had the opportunity to use them for a while but certainly plan to on a few runs if the ffff'n winter ever goes away
