Title: Tasmania trip .... Speeding fine in the Mail, a good one !
Post by: Waterbottle on December 23, 2014, 01:13:46 PM
This will be the first time I haven't lounged around opening presents and eating all day.  But I think an Upside is I'll, be on Griso heading south, (as Maxwell Smart would say) Annnnnnnnd Loving It  :D       2nd upside, we might be cheating and opening Santa's things today.
It will take my arthritic bones 2 days to Sydney, 1458 km, 2 more to Melbourne, about 1000 km, overnight on the Ferry, the "Spirit of Tasmania", then the holiday can begin.
I'm torn between feeling a little sad I won't be with family for Xmas and the excitement of a long road trip.
Griso is nearly all packed, when it gets light enough to take a photo I'll pin it up, and photos on the way too. :bike
A steady trip as the police have Double the normal speeding and traffic infringement Fines until January 4th  :+=copcar
Maybe they'll eat there donuts at home on Xmas day ?

I'm a tad envious actually. I'd love to visit Tasmania.

Meanwhile, I've just discovered that I should have fitted the crash bar before the leg shields!  Damn! Should have seen that.

Saw this one at Goulburn NSW. It looked like it still has the original owner. Still registered and used regularly.

Bikes all secured on the 'Spirit of Tasmania'. Side stand down, bike in gear, soft padded cuffs go over the grips , strap between them and down to hard points on the deck. Some people were a little worried but not me  ::) They were very professional and careful, talked to each owner before tying down.
Many Thanks to Kurt ( Tazturtle ) and friends who took the time to show us around first day here. They have these bendy things on the roads here, Corners ? I found it hard to keep up with Kurt as he rides well , and sorry to James on the Stelvio, I'm sure I was holding him up when I was wheeling Griso through some of the windy bits  :D

My first time on the Spirit of Tassie was not a good experience. I was on the LeMans which didn't have a side stand which they weren't happy with. They needed to swing the rear end around a bit and used the tail light as the lift point, which ended in tears. They ended up putting the tie down strap over the seat which at the time seemed ok but two days later in Queenstown when I lifted the bike on the centre stand it collapsed. Lucky for me there was a mechanic on duty at the local servo who was happy to weld it back together for me, at no charge.

On a brighter note the Spirit did pay for a new tail light lense and gave me a free bar tab for the night.

Tasmanians love bike riders because thousands per year spend thousands each and it's a major source of income for the state and in my two visits  I have never seen any kind of highway patrol presence. This was recently confirmed during a conversation with a rider who had recently toured the state when he had a friendly talk with a duo of officers who said if they see you having a bit of fun they will turn a blind eye. If they see you again they will issue a warning  ;-T

I'll be back there in 2016.

Any Guzzi riders looking to tour in Tassie, feel free to give me a hoy.

We live only 15 mins from where the Spirit of Tasmania docks and always happy to have a ride.

There are many, many great roads, many of which the locals know and the bike magazines seldom mention.

Stay away from the major highways and the Police presence is light to non-existent. Mind you, the speed limit is plenty in the tight stuff till you learn them.

Was great to ride with you this week Ron. Love that Griso.

Kurt

We found this little fellow foraging for ants in one of the parks. One of our group was Chastised for touching him. It's an "Echidna" about 1 ft long,

That Echidna must be used to people if one of you could get close. They're  normally quite skittish. Not that quick though....

I managed to save one that was plodding across the Princes Highway down near Bega a couple of days ago. Dumb wee bugger obviously never got given a copy of the road rules when he was in the pouch. Luckily I was able to stop, duck across the road and pick him up and he didn't manage to get a grip on the pavement! Glad I had stout gloves on! ;D

OK, I just asked my daughter and it seems that my assumption was entirely wrong. I was expecting both sexes to simply have a cloaca but no. Echidnas have, to quote Erika, "The weirdest looking penis you've ever seen." Probably most folks here aren't interested enough in the odd reproductive proclivities of monotremes so I won't bother finding a pic but I'm sure Google will be your friend if you're interested. Having a daughter who is an environmental biologist comes in handy sometimes if you're hunting weird facts!  :D

Yes but the eggs hatch and then they live in the pouch. The females don't have nipples, just small areas in the pouch that secrete a sort of 'Proto-Milk'.

Met you in Dover with my brother. We were touring on my CalVin and V7. Glad you are enjoying your trip. Unfortunately we had to cut ours short as the CalVin had a minor mishap, all good now but my brother has flown back to Sydney. Good excuse for him to come back and finish the trip though!
I'm in Wynyard if you want to join me for a ride through 'The Gorge" or any one of the other local roads. As Tazturtle rightly says, there are a great many fantastic local roads to tour here, especially in the North West.

Tramcars was one of my fav stops for a custard tart but the standard fell and I haven't been back for years. Seeing that you called in yesterday gives me hope for better times.
Might give it another chance now ;D

Pointless item of trivia.
Bass Strait is named for a Captain Bass. His wedding ring was found in the cook fire of a local Maori village. (just on the other side of Invercargill Estuary)

I enjoyed that trip report.

They most certainly did.

The first European settler in Invercargill was a guy called Matheson. He was the cabin boy on a ship that got stuck in the Invercargill estuary. The rest of the crew were eaten and he would have been too except that the chiefs daughter took a shine to the young lad.  He had a choice of being dinner or being married.

So for all who think their few hundred $$ for a service is expensive, check out this fine I received in the mail today. I must be the worst person on the east coast of Australia , jeez ...7 km per hr over , I'm lucky I'm not in gaol ( jail )  ::)

(http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/y401/aerotor/5962E74F-A290-47A5-9AAF-3349A3253F87_zpsocug5un9.jpg) (http://s1273.photobucket.com/user/aerotor/media/5962E74F-A290-47A5-9AAF-3349A3253F87_zpsocug5un9.jpg.html)

As the Griso is a company registered bike ( for checking mail and collecting parts etc ) the fines are adjusted accordingly.
My only good news is , I can fill out a form on the back of the fine and nominate myself as the very bad person to accept the fine, and hopefully it will be reduced to a sane level ?
I did drink a little too much on this trip, attributed to good company and a lovely place to be in, but I don't remember having a secret rendezvous with the issuing officers wife, how else can you explain the figure on the fine ?

It's gotta be a typo. Snapped from the Tasmanian Transport of offence table:

I'm in Tassie at the moment (work), so I better watch myself.  :o

So far, my trip has been good. Except for the work bit.

That's insane Ron. Query it.

I got pulled the other day by a pair of pimplies in Canberra. They said I was doing 140! On the Mana? On a road notorious for Wallopers and a stupid speed limit? I actually said "Rubbish!" I was then told that they were doing 140 and were only catching up slowly. They also said I was 'Racing' with a pirate who had just blown past me, (In the same lane no less. What a marroon!) I told them to stop being ridiculous! Anyway after taking my licence and bike details I was told that their 'System' was being slow and that after they'd checked me and my driving history out I "Might get a warning or I might get a fine." In the mail.

Sod that, I'll be fighting this one if they try that. Apart from anything else the limit on that stretch is 90. If I'd been doing 140 they would of taken my licence off me on the spot and cuffed me. Cocksure little pricks.

Just to really piss me off I got pulled by the Rum Corps the next day in the Jimny for heavens sakes. I didn't get booked but I had 15 minutes of my life wasted being given a lecture! He claimed I was doing 107 in a 100 zone! I mean? Really?

Pete

I think I would have preferred the fine to the 15 minute lecture. :o Could have been trying to goad you in to a more serious offence IMO.

Unfortunately the fine is legit, this happened in St Kilda, Melbourne.  I checked out the Victoria transport dept - fines for company vehicles.
For a Company owned vehicle you Will be fined at least $2900. However, I can nominate a driver, supply the details and they cop the lesser fine of around $200 or so,......... any volunteers  :D
If you are a Taxi driver or are in a company vehicle, and run a red light or rail crossing..... bang $2900. No nominating a driver then, the company just cops the full fine. Isn't the Victorian Government lovely  ???
It will take a while to get the paperwork turned around, plus $7.50 if I require a photo of said infringement, but I'll let you know how I get on.
I think I might frame the photo with a copy of the original fine , It works out at $421.71 per kph over the limit, thank the Guzzi gods they didn't see me trying to catch up to Tasturtle  :D

Pete, I beat a similar offense in court last year. My argument was,
Officer, you allege I was doing 140kph, yes, but you were doing 140kph because that was what your speedo said, yes, does that prove I was doing 140kph, no. Booyah  :-*

Phew - i was gonna say there was no way that was a legit Tassie fine Ron!

Less than 10 kmh over is only $80.

Having driven in Victoria, all I can say is that the experience is proof positive that "speed kills" is a lie. If it were so, there would definitely be no Victorians left!

More unpoliced roads to show you next trip...
