Title: 2014 California Custom mercury gray: Is it matte or clearcoat?
Post by: hammick on December 30, 2014, 12:39:14 PM
Happy New Year boys.  I'm looking at a used 2014 California Custom in mercury gray.  It's a couple hundred miles away.  I am so done with Matte paint on motorcycles.  Please tell me the mercury gray is clear coat?  Thanks.

Thanks Mike.

Can the heal shifter be removed or is it one piece with the toe shifter?  Heal shifters get in my way.

The heel shifter can be removed with a hex wrench (metric #5 I think).

Thanks for the great info guys.  I think I am going to buy it.  They are giving me a good trade on my Beemer.

Mike should I have my local dealer do the software update to help the idle?  I read it might help with the crossover pipe stress problem.  Any way to tell if it has already been updated?  The VIN is VGULVC014EM111267

It has aftermarket pipes but I'm assuming just slip-ons.  I'm also getting the stock pipes.

You will not be disappointed. I love my (identical) California 1400.

Congratulations!
Is it already in your signature, or your second Cali Custom?

Nope the only one.  I guess I'm a poser until I pick it up.  It's in St. Louis and I'll pick it up next week.

If I add the heated grips how are they activated?  The kit doesn't look like it comes with a switch.  I'm assuming the switch is already on the bike?

Picked up my California Custom today.  I bought it sight unseen from Gateway BMW and happy to report it is in perfect condition.  Their ad said less than 1k miles and I was shocked it only had 600 miles.  Some guy that splits his time between St. Louis and Newport Beach area traded it in.  Dealer said he usually trades his bikes with less than 1k miles.

Bike has the Lanfrnconi slip ons (also came with stock exhaust).  Rizoma mirrors and I think different grips.  Not sure if the levers are stock.  First service completed at Newport Italian Guzzi.

I was worried about the color but I love it.  Much deeper and unique than the photos show.  Probably the best color I've had on a bike.

It was a 2013 F800GT.  I bought it and installed a Rostra Electronic cruise control.  I planned to keep the bike for a while but after installing the Rostra I got bored with it and flipped it as I got into it cheap.

The California is just a beautiful bike.  Unfortunately it is cold as hell here with no end in sight.

Nice Rizoma bits on that California---the Lux grips, bar ends and Elisse mirrors from what I can tell.

I am not crazy about the heated grips on my Cali... they heat just fine, but on cold days I need warm knuckles, not warm palms. And the heated grips preclude buying that sweet sweet overpriced Rizoma bling.

Congratulations on a great looking bike.

Thanks.  I hope the grips are comfortable but I doubt it.  It will be a shame to cover them with grip puppies.
