Title: NGC Recommendations for Great Guy movies
Post by: boatdetective on January 01, 2015, 08:37:34 PM
OK, so I'm trying to pull together an excuse for "guys night out" for my married buddies. My idea is "the Testosterone Film Festival".  It will rotate from one man cave to the next, and the host can choose, but the requirement is that it must be an iconic guy movie. Doesn't mean it has to be mindless explosions. Basically, if you had a 13 year old son and wanted to set some role models, you could give him a list and he'd pretty much get it. The following are obvious examples. Just for fun- what would you all select? I'm running a bit dry finding modern actors/movies that fit the bill- so help me there.

The Magnificent Seven                 Yul Brynner, McQueen, Bronson, James Coburn, Eli Wallach  -Faggedaboutit!
The Great Escape                         extra points if you can whistle the theme song
Bridge on the River Kwai              ...speaking of whistling
Cool Hand Luke                            the egg eating scene is unforgetable
Scarface                                       "I only got two things- my word and my balls. ..and I don't break 'em for nobody"
Animal House                               "Seven years of college down the drain"
Goodfellas                                     "You're saying I'm funny? Funny like a clowwn?"
Alien                                              controversial, but Sigourney Weaver is pretty damn tough
Strangelove                                   "There'll be no fighting in the War Room!"
Road Warrior                                  "Ya wanna get outta here? Ya talk to me"

Time rider. a very good motorcycle western. The  T V version is easy to find but the original version is maybe impossible to find, and the ending is much better.  One of the best over looked movies out there. Flash Back is another great movie that was never advertised much.

That was on Netflix last year.  Good flick.

Add to the list

"Last Man Standing"  Bruce Willis travels through depression era Texas to lay low for a while.  Instead he lands in the middle of an Irish / Italian gang war.  If you're a fan of Willis and Colt 1911s, this is the flick for you.

Excellent call. That and "28 hours" were both GREAT.  Danny Boyle is a gifted director. Good example of how you don't need a huge bugdet and explosions to make a good movie.

I love that movie. Went to see it in one of those tiny NYC movie theaters that is about 20 feet wide by 80'? long and the A/C went out right before the film started which highly added to the viewing of the film.

I've never seen "Sorcerer" but will probably watch it since it made the "Man Film" list.

Looking up the Director for it, I read:

"Director William Friedkin initially wanted Steve McQueen to star in the film. McQueen accepted the part, but on one condition--he wanted a co-starring role for his then wife, Ali MacGraw. Friedkin would not accept his conditions, and McQueen dropped out of the film. Friedkin later went on record, regretting not accepting McQueen's conditions. He tried to get Clint Eastwood or Jack Nicholson, but neither wanted to travel at that time. He stated that casting Roy Scheider in the lead was the worst casting decision he has ever made. Although he felt Scheider is a good actor who did a great job, he is only interesting in a film as a "second or third banana, he's not a star."   "

Hmm.  I'm sure that there are Roy Scheider fans who might disagree ... !

Oh Yes! The Blue Max and Nevada Smith definitely qualify. Boy that brought back a memory. When I was 9 years old I got to go on my first cattle selling trip. Rode in a semi loaded with cattle with the driver and my father from north of Wichita to the stockyards in Kansas City. After selling the cattle the following morning my father took me to the Eisenhower Memorial and the to see "Navada Smith". Pretty hard hitting movie for me at the time. Then got to ride the Santa Fe Super Chief home to Newton, KS. Heady times!

Speaking of intensive, watch Ken Russels film The Devils, with Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed. I have not seen it in sometime, so I don't know what is currently available but try to get an uncensored copy.

Still too intense for the UK:

"Guillermo del Toro slams Warner over Ken Russell's Devils censorship
1 December 2014 9:42 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Guillermo del Toro has slammed Warner Bros over the censorship of Ken Russell classic The Devils.

The filmmaker has criticised the continuing failure to release the 1971 movie in the UK market.

"There are powers that be at Warner Bros that refuse to allow the movie to be seen," del Toro told a master class Monday night in Toronto (via The Hollywood Reporter).

The film starred Oliver Reed, Vanessa Redgrave, Dudley Sutton, Michael Gothard and Gemma Jones.

It was based on Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudun, the story of a corrupt priest (Reed) who is brought low by the accusations of a maddened mother superior (Redgrave).

"The movie has been seen very little. It can only be shown in its entirety in England if it's booked as an educational experience," said del Toro.

"It's not an accident. It's not because of lack of demand. It's a true act of censorship."

Shame on WB for their actions.

Apocalypse Now deserves to be mentioned, and I add Lawrence of Arabia.

Fitting for this site, since Lawrence died riding his Vincent cycle.

Apocalypse Now deserves to be mentioned, and I add Lawrence of Arabia.

Fitting for this site, since Lawrence died riding his Vincent cycle.

"In May 1935 Lawrence was riding the Brough back home from Bovington in Dorset to his nearby cottage at Clouds Hill. Suddenly he came upon two errand boys on bicycles, swerved to avoid them and pitched over the handlebars onto the road. His head struck the ground and he sustained terrible injuries, which would claim his life six days later. The motorcycle was only slightly damaged in the accident and was returned to the factory to be repaired by George Brough."

I don't see anything political in Tora, Tora, Tora. By any measure, the attack on Pearl Harbor was a brilliant military operation.

Patton, however, i take personal offense with. Given the context (Vietnam), the film definitely was slanted to make him appear like a bellicose, meglomaniacal bully. In fact, Patton was the most experienced, and certainly the most well read leader the Allies had on the Western Front. Depite his bluster, his method of fast attack and encirclement saved many more lives (on both sides) than the more conservative meatgrinder tactics of Bradley. Ask anyone who served under Patton and they absolutely knew it and would follow him anywhere. The Germans certainly took stock of this and considered him the only really serious professional soldier fielded by the Americans. Nevertheless, history has decided to demonize the "warlike" attitude of Patton. The movie has gon a long way to disparaging his legacy.

"Soldiers in the Rain"  Gleason and McQueen

"Zatoichi meets Yojimbo"  Katsu and Mifuni  well all the Zatoichi or Mifuni movies for that point, Takeshi Kintano is also pretty good

"Quigley Down Under"  Selleck as a true rifleman

Just saw Tora! Tora! Tora! again last month, and its historical accuracy is a strike against it, in terms of entertainment. Most of the film is mid-level officers walking into an office and handing a teletype sheet to a scowling commanding officer. Repeat that for 2 hours, then an hour of some just-okay special effects during the attack itself. The Japanese sections of the film are a lot better than the English/American sections.

Oh, and WRT to Patton...my father and his cohorts hated him. "When Patton said, 'I'll get to Berlin even if it takes a jeepload of dogtags,'" my father would recall, "we knew those were our dogtags he was talking about." Not everyone was a Patton fan. Bill Mauldin captured the sentiment well, too:

Correct! You win a cookie.

One of the things I like about Kelly's Heroes is that the producers went to great lengths for authenticity, despite the fanciful plot and characters. The "serious" WWII movies of the period, in contrast (Patton, Battle of the Bulge, etc.) are pretty awful in that regard, full of obviously post-war vehicles & uniforms, and use of locations that don't resemble their real life counterparts. I don't think a more realistic looking WWII movie was made until Saving Private Ryan, three decades later.

Anyway, to add to the thread, I'm going to mention More American Graffiti. Not nearly as well known as the first film, but stands on its own and is worth a watch.

Lannis

No, no, NO!

See the movie that this was based on, "The Wages of Fear" this is the most spine-tingling movie about trucks you'll ever see. Well, it's actually about a lot more than trucks, but you just have to see for yourself. This made the top 10 of AFI's most suspenseful movies.

Also, since we're talking movies: "I bought a Vampire Motorcycle" and "Psychomania" are classics of British motorcycle cinematic art.

Based on actual casualties, Patton saved way more lives with his breakthrough tactics than the hesitant, indecisive Bradlee....but the press loved Brad's "aw shucks, I'm just doing my job" persona.  Patton blustered and fostered a crude, aggressive public image. Nevertheless, he was not just some nut who believed he was Alexander the Great reincarnated. He swept across France in a matter of weeks and was held up at the border of Germany for political reasons.  On hindsight, this was Eisenhower pandering to Montgomery's ego. Patton's gas and supplies went to Monty for Market Garden- which proved a stupendously bad plan.

In the end, Patton was crucified by reporters and the upper level brass caved to this pressure. As a result, the war in the West continued for another six months. We now know Patton would have been able to get to Berlin before Christmas.  Once again, given the tenor of the country in 1970, it's no surprise that Patton was portrayed as an egomaniacal clown.

It's interesting history- I'd recommend the Soul of Battle by Victor Davis Hanson.

Well, Dennis Hopper wouldn't be a roll model in Blue Velvet, but one might argue that Kyle MacLachlan could be.  My son was 13 or 14 when he saw it, and now he's a great kid who is a junior at NC State with a 4.0 average.  The reason I like it so much is Lynch's writing and direction.  It kept me on the edge of my seat most of the way through, alternating between laughing and terrified.  Sorry Greta didn't like it, but that's understandable, since it's obviously not for everyone.

I asked Fay to pick out a movie to watch last night, and she chose "The Blues Brothers".   Aside from a couple of cartoonish silly moments, that really is a good musical.

So maybe since she picked it and she's a girl, it loses its credentials as a "Guy Movie"?    And the only movie she REFUSES to watch with me is "Cool Hand Luke", so its credentials are certainly established ....

Just a reminder here: we are talking about Guy movies- not simply good movies.  (The Machinist is a powerful performance, but it's not a "guy movie")

Just because they are great guy movies does not mean that women must be repulsed by them.

The fact that Fay chose The Blues Brothers does not disqualify the movie. Rather, it is only proof that Lannis, indeed, found a "keeper". Damn- I bet she can TIG weld and swing a chainsaw as well.

The plot and subplots are great.

How do you understand the Swedish version?  Is it dubbed in English, or does it have subtitles?  Or maybe you speak the language.j

And I know you were kidding, but I was cringing when I typed that about my son.  It did support my point, so I felt it necessary.   :)

Harvey has a dog that translates , or more accurately it translates the dialogue to cat , and then the cat translates the dialogue to English  :D

Just a reminder here: we are talking about Guy movies- not simply good movies.  (The Machinist is a powerful performance, but it's not a "guy movie.

"MOVIE INFO
Brad Anderson directs the psychological thriller The Machinist, a production of Spain's Filmax company. Christian Bale plays Trevor Reznik, a factory lathe operator who has developed a serious case of insomnia. Lack of sleep has already started to wear down on his brain and his body. When he's involved in an accident at work, his co-workers turn against him. He starts to find strange notes in his apartment and see people that apparently aren't there. Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as call girl … More"

...psychological thriller....factory lathe operator....call girl. I thought it was a guy movie. Certainly not a Wuthering Heights type movie.  ;)

Oh man I was just messing with you. I am really sorry if I embarrassed you and made it sound like your were bragging. Shit man I'd be puttin up billboards if I had a kid with a 4.0 at State. Crap I do not even have a kid but like Dusty says I got a smart dog. A border collie is smarter than anything except they are stupid as shit cause they have no safety judgement. They do not care a bit about their bodies. It's all about going as fast and fur-ious as they can and if the crash so what. They make up for it with afterburners.
But really Jim I'm sorry for jerking your chain. And yes the Swedish version is subtitled. I am lucky to be unilingual. And good for you and your smart kid  man.

No problem at all about the kid in school thing, I knew you were teasing.

We started the Swedish version this evening and when it had subtitles we killed it.  Not because we don't like subtitles, but because we were making Crepe Calzones on an electric griddle in front of the TV, and knew we couldn't concentrate on the dialog and cook at the same time.  Boy they were good.

Oh, and I've met your Border Collie a couple times, and the afterburner description is good.  We have an Australian Shepherd, and she's similar in the energy department.  Whenever anyone or anything comes into the yard, be it a person or UPS truck, when it tries to leave, the dog tries to herd it back into the yard at any expense.  Too bad we aren't raising a herd of sheep or goats or voles or aardvarks.

About the most anti-PC movie, by almost anyone's standards, has to be the Sascha Baron Cohen film  "The Dictator"  Great guy film imho,

Funny film. My neighbor co-wrote and produced it - he rides a Norton.

There is not much dialog in the girl tattoo movie but I did really like when after she rescues her partner from torture she leans down close to him
and quietly asks. "May I kill him"?

I just saw "Inherent Vice"

wow

"The Big Labowski" meets "The Long Good Bye" meets Hunter S Thompson.

funniest movie I've seen in years.  So many good lines.  I'm going to have to see it again to catch what I missed the first time.

I've not seen the Swedish version of the dragon movies. I understand they are better, and the local small town library has them. I just don't have (take) much time to watch movies. Loved the Blues Brothers. *Everyone* in that movie are musicians, a fact that I only realized while watching it straight several years later.. ;D

I've been loving the trailer for this one.  Now it's a must see.  Just the review I needed.
