I dont think having Honda there at that time would have helped- I recall the valves and ignition were the main problems at the beginning. 1955 was a bit early for Honda.

How so, lots of 8 cylinder Honda look a-likes?

Carcano didn't need Soichiro. He achieved much more with much less than Honda ever did. Quite the opposite - story goes that Honda paid Guzzi to have a look at the V8 when they were designing the NR500 GP racer.
