The tanks on John's website are stunning looking. What I really wanted to know, he has quoted prices, does this include VAT? (I'm in the US) Having bad luck getting a hold of him.
-
Also, I have had no luck contacting him. I wrote a letter around thanksgiving, and tried his phone number 01387 740 259 According to calls to Scotland from the US, you must dial 011(the US exit extension) + 44(the Scotland area code)+1387740259 but I get a "restricted/no service message"
-
Try knocking the 1 off the front of the number.
Pete

Thanks Pete :)

Isn't the VAt assessed only inside the EU? ??? ???
Like how in the US you don't have to pay sales tax on internet purchases, unless it's sold from within your own state?
-
if you buy from the UK to ship to the US you dont have to pay vat, I've done it many times.
-
Buying from outside the UK you will not be liable for VAT.
-
Hope you have better luck with him than a friend of mine. He ordered a tank and seat from him and is still waiting after 3 years. My friend sends him anniversary cards. Has talked to him many times about how long this is taking and gets promises to ship it the next week. Doesn't happen.

A few moons ago there was a story here about a shop in India doing the same type of work, can't seem to find the link but matbe someone here remembers.
Good luck,
John

If you navigate the Tank Shop website a bit , it will indicate by deduction that John Williams has relocated to Bulgaria, as he offers a vacation scheme in his facilities which include tank making instruction/ fabrication on site . Perhaps this might explain the problem contacting him. As an alternative, asides from the various EBay India alternatives, check into Alutank.de as they were offering Guzzi tanks etc.
-
I remember the thread but can't find it. Try: http://www.benjiescaferacer.com/metal-gas-tank.php

These guys seems to be in the same price range: http://www.tabclassics.com/

Coincidentally I ordered a long tank from TAB classics before Christmas. I was quoted a 6 week lead time which is pretty reasonable and they wouldn't take payment until the tank is ready for dispatch. Hopefully at the end of this month I'll have a shiny new tank. I'll post a report on quality and service when it arrives.

Price of 400 pounds($600) seems very good for a Ducati Imola Replica tank. Even the Indian units are $870.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna check out the links. FYI I purchased an aluminum LeMansII tank from India thru eBay. The store I think was called "vintage motors" Long story short, the tank was terrible

I wouldn't mind trying India again, as long as their workmanship is competent

It was leaky, the sides and metal work wasn't consistent and very obvious , fitmanship was actually ok

In their latest email shot Reboot Guzzi spares were offering ally tanks:
Polished Alloy fuel tank - £625.00GBP
Polished Alloy seat unit - £265.00GBP
I had a quick look on their web site but couldn't see a link or photo
TAB classics seem good, I recall speaking to them some years back.
Hope that helps.

Another source would be Evan Wilcox but he does have a rather long wait. I have personally seen his work in person and it is stunning. I'm fortunate because I live within an hour of him.

Pete is right. You need to omit the 1 in front of the 3. So 01144387740259 should work.

Goosecoop: I recently talked to Richard at TABClassicsII, next week they are starting a production of Tonti Guzzi tanks. I ordered one and he said turnaround should be six weeks finished, plus shipping time. He also asks that you pay after the finish, so you can check out pictures of your tank, and then give your approval!!!! I really wished John at the tank shop could have returned my contact, but that's life. Can your friend cancel his order at the Tank Shop? TAB tanks is doing a run of Tonti Guzzle tanks enxt week, the next Guzzi run will be in December
PS. So far Richard has responded to all my queries next day, and provides a lot of photos and references. The T.A. Baker story on his website is pretty cool, he taught his daughter how to build tanks before he passed on
-
I wish my friend could cancel his order. I think, but am unsure, that he already paid for it.
TABClassicsII sounds like a stand up place.
-
I've been to his place and stayed overnight.
He's the quintessential grumpy old man with gnarled hands and beer bottle glasses, living in a partly renovated house in the backwoods, not a long way from Loch Ness.
Insisted that we take his dog for a 2 mile walk in the hills and drink 15 "coops of tea" before it was suggested I retire for the evening and we MAY have a look at some tanks in the morning.
His work area is an absolute Alladdin's cave of gems, finished/unfinished/ discarded/ and unclaimed.
Manx Norton, Triumph, Harley, Guzzi......etc.
Then of course there's "UPSTAIRS IN ATTIC !"
Don't get me started..(although happy if you want to)
BTW..
For all the people who like to tour with a map ???
Try finding Mr Williams' place in the forest, Tom Tom took me to the front gate using only Postcode. :thumb:

Ring the Pub in the High Street, they pass his messages on when he comes down from the hills for supplies..!

Some people on accessnorton have reported good results with their purchase of tanks from TAB.

Maybe he's moved but I would not want to walk from Loch Ness to Dumfries........... .................I suppose if you're Aussie then you see scale differently to our miserably small little island

There's a lot of common sense in what you say Jock, but there's nought that's miserable about some of the homesteads on the far side of Nessie's Pond..

I had The Tank Shop made this for me several years back. Took about 12 weeks. Was under a grand and significantly less than a few of the other fab guys that were around at the same time and in this post FWIW. John was a bit eclectic to say the least.
