Many of us post camp headquarters at Holiday Travel Park.

How many of you guys are planning on going?
Wanna try to convene at a place like we did at Martin's in Flagler Beach for lunch/dinner last year?
-
I have Daytona on our schedule but I started this winter with the idea of getting a routine medical tune up and it's turning into a major overhaul that is going to mess up my spring riding plans. ::( Looking forward to Martin's and we can take the car. If we go, and right now that's a big if, we will camp at http://www.volusia.org/services/community-services/parks-recreation-and-culture/parks-and-trails/park-facilities-and-locations/ecological-nature-parks/lake-monroe-park.stml AKA "Camp Como"

Tip christened it "Camp Carlo" when he found it. ;D It's a hoot, but we'll be in California..

Martin's at Flagler beach sounds good. What day/time? There is also the Pantheon in Daytona, Monday the 9th. Not sure of the time.

We will post details of the Martin's dinner soon.

So when do you want to go to Martins?
Matt
Matt, we are checking with some of the others. Maybe Thursday like last year. I will post something soon.
-
If I end up making it down I'll gladly meet up at Martin's, best prime rib on earth in my opinion. Might take one of the Geese or my Waterbuffalo, the 2-stroke smoke is always fun to piss of the general crowd on Main Street at night. And if I make it I'll make it a point to head to camp Carlo.
-
I'm planning on coming to Camp Carlo. Have not yet gotten a solid plan for the trip. May ride, may Truck 1/2 way or maybe all the way. Motogoro is hoping to join me but he's a working stiff still, so has limited time.
Priority right now is to finish up my 2 bathrooms remodeling here in Tennessee. Snowed, iced in at the moment. Contractors can't get up the mountain to set the last tile and grout it.
-
Doesn't look like I'll make it. Seeing that WERA has taken over the 200 has taken away half the motivation. I'll miss Camp Carlo and lunch with y'all.

Oh come on, John. Good lord.
Who cares about the boring 200 race anyway! Come visit wif your friends, eat and be merry! That's the important part! Do it while you can!
In your honor:

Remember that?

boy.....that was a big meal. ;D

was planning on going to Daytona this year, but my orthopaedic surgeon can fit me in for wrist surgery on the 4th (carpal tunnel), which makes heading down on the 7th probably a no go...

Good luck to you. I am scheduled to have torn ligaments in my right thumb surgically repaired on Feb. 24, so I'll be in a cast for Bike Week. Travel by car; no day rides; no test-riding the new bikes? I dunno. OTOH, there is Supercross! And flat track! (The 200? Zzzzzzzzz.)
-
I also am having health issues so we will be missing Daytona but we don't want to miss Martins and we are also traveling by car. I made motel reservations for Wednesday and Thursday nights. That's a hint. Hint, hint. ;D ;D ;D

l meet ya'll at Martin's and Parthenon. just let me know when. I'll be in my fiat this year. I decided Fla is too boring a place to ride a motorcylce.

Hey, that's Dale in the front left. I have not seen him since he left the Michigan Rally a few years ago and had a "get off" of his T-3 while returning to Florida. How is he doing?
-
Will the distinguished gentleman seated at the head of the table and his lovely wife be joining again?
Also, don't forget the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance takes place on the 15th of March...$80 for advanced tickets is pricey, but if you've never been you should check it out. Bike parking right out front is not a problem. Also the Celtic festival in St. Augie is that weekend too.

Remember me ? I am planning on attending the Pantheon dinner on Monday the 9th and that prime rib at Martin's looks awfully good might make that also. No , I am not riding and and still bike-less and have no plans on getting one. Just would like to see some old friends.

Not only do we remember you, but your picture has been on Moto Guzzi Dairy Products cartons for a year or two as "missing in action". ("They said you was hung!")
There will be a lot of people glad to see you!

Okay, it's set. Just like last year.
Martin's at Flagler beach on THURSDAY, MARCH 12 AT 12:00 NOON.
http://martinsrestaurantfl.com/
If you are fairly certain you will be there, please post it so we can get an idea of a headcount. I always like giving them advance notice for saving a table.
Wow, Bike Week is only about 2 weeks away! Sheeze

I'll be at Martins!!

Hiya Dan!
There have been many changes in the Lario since you brought it to me in Virginia. ;D Sorry we won't be at bike week to say hey.
-
My brother and I will be there. Martins is 10 miles from my house. I can't miss this one.

With all the bad weather around, if things are nice there, people will be glad for some respite at Bike Week.
A few people have mentioned the Celtic Festival in St. Augustine, March 13-15 this year.
http://celticstaugustine.com/
Most people think of Celtic culture (normally pron Keltic and Kelts) as being from the British Isles area but it covered a much wider area of Europe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celts
It's a nice, medium-sized festival.

I'll be heading that way next week for a 2-3 week stay at New Smyrna Beach. Unfortunately, can't haul 2 bikes so I'll be taking the F650 so that I can do some forest road riding in the Ocala NF. Took the Guzzi last year and did the Key West thing. The ride down and back was great but Key West is just the same as it was a few years ago only worse.

Who owns that nice red V7 Sport?
-
Looks like me and a buddy are riding in from Texas. Of the two events (Monday nite and Thursday at noon) which is the larger gathering?
-
Last year the Monday gathering was about 30, Thursday at Martin's was about a dozen. Food at Martin's is much better! These two events are just the tip of the iceburg. Where are you staying?
Peter Y.
-
I think we're staying at a friend's house in Holly Hill.
-
Hey guys, Bill here. Still bikeless, but like Dan was hoping to see some old friends this year. My business partner is on maternity leave, so I'm playing one-armed paper hanger putting out fires and I have someone flying in from DC on Thursday to meet with me, so there is no way I can make Martin's. Is Monday night at Pantheon's still on or has that been replaced by the Martin's lunch? Will try to make the VA and NC Rallies this year, even if I have to rent the V-Strom again.

Bill, thought you had fallen off the face of the earth! Sorry to hear that you're bikeless, glad to hear that you're busy, and don't forget that Life is about the Journey, not the destination. Gotta stop and smell the hot exhaust every once in a while!
See you this summer ....

Hi Bill. AFAIK, Pantheon Pizza is on for Monday night dinner, March 9th, around 6:00 pm.
Seeing my surgeon for a post-op assessment tomorrow; hope to see everyone at Daytona next week!

Same here. Will be seeing mine on the 5th. Spinal Stenosis. I can't get on my motorcycles (that's why I purchased the Miata) and keeping my balance is very difficult when I attempt to walk. I'm going to try and make Martins but Pantheon's is out.

***** NEWSFLASH*****SPECIAL ALERT********* NEW PROPOSED EVENT AT BIKE WEEK *****
Okay, we have a new stellar event to propose during the many festivities at Daytona Bike Week this year.
OATMEAL MORNING !!!!! THE OATMEAL RUN !!!!!
Heyy! How about that!!???
Pyoung and I have already been talking about doing it and I thought "why not open it up to the masses" and see if anyone else would like to participate in this culinary zenith.
The location will need to be at Mary's in St. Augustine and we can choose a morning that best suits everybody. We could even lead a ride up the scenic (A1A) coastal highway along the Atlantic Ocean. It would be a short morning ride and culminate in a wonderful partaking of The Food of the Gods! The first annual Oatmeal Run!
Anybody interested?? We will need a headcount so I can give advance notice.
Wait, before making up your mind, just look at this actual image of what you can expect-

I'm in for Pantheon Monday night; albeit the food is much better at Stavros. Maybe next year we'll go there instead.
I have to be back home on Thurs, so I cannot make Martins.
We will eat there one night during the time we're there. It's always one of the stops we all look forward to.
Oatmeal sounds good. What day? morning?
I'll be at Holiday Travel Park, on the corner beside the maintenance shed.
Stephen.

We are working on a time for the Oatmeal run and Friday morning, after the Martin's lunch, is emerging as the best morning for the most people.
I'm hoping to make an organized ride out of it, perhaps beginning at the Flagler Beach Pier at 8:30AM.
Stephen, can't you hang around a while longer???

Nope. I have to make it a short bike week this year. Friday - Wed. only. >:(

If you make it to Red Ember cycles please meet the owner BG (bald guy)
He's quite the character but a good guy from what little time I was around him! Every day a tech training in Costa Mesa was interesting with him around!
-
Red Ember is where the last Moto Guzzi dealer was located, about a block north of the Triumph/Ducati/BMW dealer in Daytona Beach. I was in there last year. They had 3-4 new Guzzi bikes on the floor, a couple Guzzi bikes on consignment, and a mix of other stuff. Nice guys. It's not a high volume shop.
Peter Y.
-
I've been to Red Ember several times.
Maybe they are improving but most of my impressions are that they were primarily a Guzzi Dealer In Name Only, Guzzi DINO. They have pretty much been an independent pirate shop dealing in used Harleys, Jap Clones and scooters.
They often would have only 2 or 3 Guzzi models on the floor. Before I purchased my Stelvio, I asked them about one. They were not sure what it was. Upon looking it up, the guy told me they could order me one. It would be straight MSRP and I had to pay for it before ordering. Unless they have changed, they stocked very few parts or service items for Guzzi.
Last year, they had a few more models of Guzzi bikes amidst dozens of used cruisers and scooters.
Maybe things are looking up for them. I hope they do well and become a full-fledged Guzzi dealer along with whatever else they are selling.
This is from Bike Week 2013. Red Ember had one new Guzzi and one used Guzzi. Everything else is non-Guzzi-

^^^ I hope they have changed for the better, as well. The math suggests this might be so. Free test-rides of new Aprilia and Moto Guzzi models from each of THREE locations. Unless they are planning on having people wait a while for their turn, or sending people scurrying all over town to sample some of each, or just flat-out disappointing people, they would have to be stocking a few demos of each of the two brands' several models in order to pull this off -- plus the staff to run it all. Fingers crossed.
BTW, you missed an opportunity: A Guzzisti-In-Name -Only? That's obviously a GINO. ;)

Ha! They weren't even pretending to be Guzzisti!
"A what?" Stelvio. "Stelvio?" Yes, it's their version of a GS. "Oh yeah, cool bro. I think I saw that in a magazine."

Hummm, what's this about demo rides from three locations? Guzzi and Aprilia? That could be serious fun. Any more details?

Look up (Reply #57)
-
You'd think they would at least do a spell check on an advertisement they are running! Motto Guzzi? Comming?
-
Actually, I'm surprised to see the demo rides for Guzzi or Aprilia. Liability issues have caused the major manufacturers to pull back from demo rides at Daytona. Last year HD had a big presence but most of the other folks were limiting the rides to cruisers and only on a loop around the airport. Of course part of that problem might have been driven by construction at the speedway. Ducati and BMW ran rides from the dealer location downtown and those were very closely supervised...low fun quotient. It's even more surprising to hear that these demos will be from three locations, given the minimal staffing at the dealer and his limited stock of bikes. Maybe MGNA is offering some help and a supply of bikes. 6 days until the truth comes out.

Just called to confirm. The phone number is 386 226-0068. Said they were offering demo rides at the "National Speedway". I guess that's the race track ???

I was at Red Ember about an hour and a half ago. Piaggio will be hosting demo rides at the speedway. There will be one V7 special and one V7 stone to demo. If I heard right there will be 7 Cali 1400's to demo. 3 touring and 4 custom. No stelvio or griso. I think that this is a big step for the brand exposure and I will be there to support it. That means I will be riding some new guzzi 1400's. Bring it on. I think that Justin at Red Ember deserves a lot of kudos for his part in getting Piaggio to do this. He has been working on this for a long time.
The shop was also remodeled and there are 8 cali 1400's and 5 V7's in there along with a bunch of new Vespa's.

Wow...that's great news.
I haven't seen MG doing demo rides at the speedway in years.
This should help the local dealer. Hard to sell bikes that nobody sees.

Let's go ride them puppies! It would be a damn shame for the bikes to just sit in the paddock. They need to be rolling!

I think 1400 test rides will be a real hit. Ride a Cali back to back to Harley, Indian, Victory, Asian, etc., and the 1400 will come off pretty good.
I wonder what will happen to all those demo bikes? :pop
-
I wonder what will happen to all those demo bikes? :pop
Dave Richardson in Seattle will probably get them to sell at bargain prices!
I wish we could test ride them like Harley has their demo test loop set up. They cut you loose on a relatively nice route without a guide. You have more of an opportunity to get a feel of the bike. These typical guided test rides where everybody stays lined up like a bunch of baby quail and you run 50 MPH don't do much for me.
I remember test riding a BMW R1200S when they were first introduced. I later bought one but the test ride did very little to give me an idea of what that thing would do.
Of course, I realize pure mayhem would probably result if all the test riders were given free reign out and about the racetrack vicinity.

Back in my BMW and Moto Guzzi dealership days, BMW of North America provided the BMW Demo Bikes I could have cared less where or how you rode their demo. ;D I owned the Moto Guzzi demos and I always road along on another motorcycle. ;D I just didn't want people beating up my motorcycles. ::( Then someone demoed a Harley, from Low Country Harley, and didn't bring it back. :o It was called "theft by deception" and Phil's insurance didn't cover "theft by deception". ??? Guess what? Phil and I had the same insurance agent. :( That was the end of turning folks loose with the demo bikes. ::(

Martin's at Flagler beach on THURSDAY, MARCH 12 AT 12:00 NOON.

If you are fairly certain you will be there, please post it so we can get an idea of a headcount. I always like giving them advance notice for saving a table.
I plan on being there as long as it's not cold and rainy...Saturday we had some nasty "winter" storm...couldn't even golf (first Saturday missed all winter)...but it's been in 70's all week so far.
Yes, we will be there this year but with our Fiat since we didn't bring a bike this year. We will also be at the Celtic festival at St augustine one of those days. When is the meet at that Penthannon (spell)
How do you like you new KTM? Hopefully will see ya at both Matins and Celtic festival...I'll be the one wearing a kilt.

Anyone thinking they'll do The Oatmeal Run with us on Friday morning @ 8:30 from Flagler Pier ?

All the HD demo bikes at Bike Week have a transponder installed. If you ride off the designated airport loop they get an alert and can track, like LoJack.

yeah, it's great how Harley does it. You get signed up and you get in line and wait until you see a bike you want to ride. You follow the course which it probably 5 miles on your own and come back. And then you get back, you can do it all over again. The bikes all have tracers on them. If you're gone too long, they can find you. I missed a sign on one my rides and just told them about it. No big deal and they explained how they can trace the bike and some of the stories of folks that took day trips and got busted.
-
So what happens if you get busted. I had one of Charleston's Finest keep a R80ST overnight. When he returned the motorcycle the tank had a dent in the side. Wasn't a thing I could do about it.

So sorry to hear, Matt. I hope all goes well for you.
I didn't know you had planned a trip to NL. I've been there many times and it's fantastic. Gander is the site (I am sure you know) of the huge military airbase. A big motorcycle rally is held there every year too.
If you email, maybe I can give you some suggestions on scenic routes etc on the island. I used to go there once or twice a year.

"If you email, maybe I can give you some suggestions on scenic routes etc on the island. I used to go there once or twice a year".
Thanks. Should know in about a month. Been to the air port quit a few times but never was able to get out and about. I'm told my Dad family came from Gander and Daughter in-law was born in Corner Brook. My first attempt, by motorcycle, was 1986 by going up the northern side of the St. Laurence. Didn't quit work and ran out of time. Latest attempt was last Fall. This time via NS and the ferry, or that was the plan. Son in-law and I made it to ST. John, NB but, once again, ran out of time. WE could have done but it would have been petal to the metal all the way so we agreed we would return in the spring. This crap appeared to come on right after Swamp Scooters but looking back the first signs appeared last summer when it was becoming harder and harder to get my leg over my motorcycles. Also, about the same time, standing on one leg to put on my over pants was becoming quite difficult.
My primary care guy call all this stuff "mechanical" so that makes it's repairable. They are going to remove one disk from my lower back and replace it with plastic. Going to take, according to my  drinking buddies, about 1/2 hour. "Like driving a car, a million things could go wrong but seldom do". ::)

Newfoundland is one most beautiful places to tour that I've been. The scenery is spectacular and the people are the most genuine and friendly on earth.
I've been all over. Corner Brook is on the west end and Gander is in the middle. There's a big memorial in Gander to mark the crash years ago of a US military plane full of serviceman who died.
Be aware that the natives pronounce it Nu-fun-land' with emphasis on that last syllable.

The burning candle that draws me to Bike Week is beginning to dim! I don't know if I'm in the mood to ride in the rain all day to get there.

Due to logistical issues, our organized Oatmeal Ride on Friday is postponed until another time.
OATMEAL RIDE IS CANCELLED
MARTIN'S FOR LUNCH TODAY, THURSDAY, AT 12 IS STILL ON. I have already called Martin's and made a group reservation under name David. I will see everybody at Martin's at noon today.

I'll be heading down to the speedway around 8 tomorrow morning for the demo rides, if anyone from here will be down there. The guzzi is down awaiting a couple parts so I'll be on my Honda.

Sorry I didn't make lunch, but I spent too much time at the MG/Aprilia tent. 11 new MG's on display with several iterations of the V7 II, 3-Cal 1400's, Norge, etc. Also some great new helmets including MG modulars, with built in Bluetooth, leather covered MG helmets and some new lightweight models meant to go with the V7 ll. The also had a nice catalogs with the complete line and accessories. I tHink their parent company has been a good influence ;)

Correct the Eldo is on display only.
For the demo rides they have about 11 California's and 2 V7's.

LOVE that Eldo. If you're able to grab any pics from the 'Guzzi Garage' booth next to that please post those too.

How would we know who they are ??? Do they carry i.d.? ;) The Aprilia/MG tent was on the far end of the track quote a ways from H-D.
I rode my CalVin up to Daytona. After getting off it and sitting on the 1400 Touring, it seemed enormous! Deninitely not for me. Now the Dark Rider and Dapper, they were very cool!
-
before you say it's enormous, did you ride one?

I rode a 1400 Custom back-to-back with my EV when the new Cali came out. Sure, the new bike is longer and heavier than the bike it replaces. It's also a much better cruising, touring and two-up machine than its predecessor, so that extra mass is not superfluous. The added length makes for a much less crowded cockpit, the bike is actually narrower in the middle, so straddling it is easier, and the added weight is countered by better balance, power, and control. Try it; you'll like it.
Very sorry to miss Bike Week this year; life got in the way. Hope to see everyone there next year!

Good answer.
I was pleased with the way it rode and felt.
I'm a little cautious about a 700+ lb bike but if I wasn't so attached to my 03 EVT I would strongly consider the touring as a replacement.
-
Ahh, the Cali 1400 Touring- I had no idea that bike was that good until I rode it. I am not a fan of large bikes but riding the 1400 has caused a paradigm shift. I could seriously live long term with the 1400. It is easy for me to run out of superlatives attempting to describe this bike. It feels light when I needed it to feel light and planted when I needed it to feel planted. It handled very well and has great power. It is slightly lumpy at idle and smoothed right out when the throttle is blipped. It is comfortable, fun to ride and no work at all in traffic. My brother, who owns ten motorcycles including a Harley classic declared it the most comfortable bike he has ridden. I rode the touring twice and the custom once. Prefer the touring. I don't care what you have going on, if you are in Daytona this weekend get thee to the Guzzi tent and ride the sum'biz. You owe it to yourself.
One additional thing- Piaggio/Guzzi is very generous with the demo rides. They cover a nice route with a variety of riding scenarios and last a good 30-45 minutes depending on traffic.
-
before you say it's enormous, did you ride one?
Yes, I rode it twice. It was fine and well balanced once out on the road. But for me, just to heavy and bulky for every day use.
